The relationship of physique and personality has long challenged psychologists, physicians, and more recently, physical educators. Many studies, such as those by Sheldon, have attempted to determine correlations which might exist between a physique type and personality. However, it seems that a related area which is very important to the physical education profession has failed to receive sufficient investigation. Comparatively little research has been carried out to determine the relationship between an individual's state of physical fitness and his personality characteristics. It was the purpose of this study to accurately trace Roy Johnson's career in order to distinguish fact from fiction pertaining to stories and happenings attached to his name and his career; to further determine how various individuals regarded and affected him; and finally, to provide the archives of the University of New Mexico, and interested scholars, with a permanent historical record of the life of an individual who most undoubtedly has been substantially instrumental in the evolution of the University's Physical Education and Varsity Athletic programs.
