An Investigation Of The Amount Of Emphasis Placed On Content And Delivery By Instructors Of Public Speaking, Paul J. Siddens Iii

Faculty Publications

A study examined how much emphasis instructors of public speaking place on content and delivery when teaching and delivering oral and written critiques. The study sought to determine whether when teaching a hybrid introduction to communication course; or public speaking course; instructors are challenged with teaching their students about issues related to the content of the speech; such as the introduction and conclusion; organization; supporting evidence; and issues related to physical and vocal delivery such as appearance; gestures; eye contact; volume; rate; and vocal variety. This was a pilot study to test the research questions; survey instrument; and methodology used …

Faculty Publications

Concerns are being raised in both professional literature as well as in the popular press regarding certain aspects of the literature-based movement. Here we report on findings from a longitudinal study of a group of first -grade teachers who have been attempting (with varying degrees of success)to introduce literature-based teaching strategies into their classrooms. We inspect the experiences of these teachers in relation to four areas of concern that have been raised regarding literature-based teaching: 1. skills instruction; 2.guided reading strategies; 3. literature selection;and 4. thematic teaching (or curriculum integration). We describe classroom practices and the 9 problems and possibilities …

The program provides an option for pursuing a master's in education structured upon the following constructivism-focused framework of components: (1) the program is designed for experienced educators; and all coursework is applicable to the classroom; (2) classrooms serve as field-based learning laboratories; (3) students progress through the program in cohort groups; (4) professors collaborate in teaching teams to deliver an articulated curriculum; (5) electives; seminars; and practice foster individualization within a community of learners; (6) exit outcomes reflect the linkage of …

Human Relations Training For Student Teachers, Richard Stahlhut, Richard Hawkes Jan 1994

Human Relations Training For Student Teachers, Richard Stahlhut, Richard Hawkes

Faculty Publications

Human relations training is a requirement for all teacher education majors graduating from Iowa colleges and universities. At the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) this course is delivered to preservice teacher education students in conjunction with their full semester student teaching experience. Major goals of the training program are: (1) to confront individuals with experiences designed to create an awareness of biases; attitudes; and beliefs and to create awareness of the degree of congruency between stated beliefs and actual behavior; and (2) to internalize and translate such awareness into actions which result in more positive relationships within the teaching/learning environment. …

An Inservice Model To Impact Life-Science Classroom Practice: Part Two, David P. Butts, Wyatt Anderson, Mary Atwater, Thomas Koballa, Patricia Simmons, Rosalina Hairston Mar 1993

An Inservice Model To Impact Life-Science Classroom Practice: Part Two, David P. Butts, Wyatt Anderson, Mary Atwater, Thomas Koballa, Patricia Simmons, Rosalina Hairston

Faculty Publications

This model for an inservice program describes why teachers change the nature of their students' experiences in science. In the evaluation study with 7th grade Life Science teachers in Southeast, evidence showed that as teachers' knowledge in specific topics in biology was enhanced, their classroom use of this knowledge also changed. As their knowledge of science and alternative teaching practices was expanded, their attitudes toward teaching showed that they were more aware that there was more to learn but were also more confident that they could acquire the new knowledge they needed. In their classroom, their concerns for students showed …

An Inservice Model To Impact Life Science Classroom Practice: Part One, David P. Butts, Wyatt Anderson, Mary Atwater, Thomas Koballa, Patricia Simmons, Rosalina Hairston

Faculty Publications

A model inservice program built on a theoretical foundation for changing behavior incorporates both teachers' knowledge, their attitudes as well as what they do. What teachers do in the classroom depends on both what they know and how they feel about what they know, Changing what teachers know and do is accomplished in a three phase sequence, awareness, arousal and action. In the awareness phase, teachers are confronted with their knowledge needs. In the arousal phase, teacher generate interest in using what they know. Action is reflected in what teachers do and is reinforced when they have time to reflect …

Examining An Assumption Of Linkage Between Lesson Planning And Implementation, Trena Wilkerson, Anthony J. Scheffler Sep 1992

Examining An Assumption Of Linkage Between Lesson Planning And Implementation, Trena Wilkerson, Anthony J. Scheffler

Faculty Publications

It is often suggested that preservice teachers who are trained to develop a lesson plan will, with equal acumen, be able to implement that plan. The purpose of this study was to test this assumption. Twenty-six preservice teachers in an early childhood practicum developed and implemented a mathematics lesson plan. The lesson plans were evaluated according to specific criteria set forth in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics using a weighted checklist. The implementation of each plan was also assessed using a Likert Scale reflective of similar criteria. A correlation between the …

Consolidating Perceptions Of Middle School Teaching Through Participatory-Type Early Field Experiences, Bobby D. Moore, Rex Leonard Sep 1990

Consolidating Perceptions Of Middle School Teaching Through Participatory-Type Early Field Experiences, Bobby D. Moore, Rex Leonard

Faculty Publications

It is entirely possible that prospective teachers whose early school exposures are limited to the short student teaching endeavor will have an inaccurate or distorted perception of the problems and frustrations they will actually encounter when they being their initial teaching assignment. This study was designed to determine the impact that extensive early field experiences had on the ranking of the middle school teacher characteristics at specific stages of maturation during the teacher preparation program. Of the 10 teacher characteristics ranked, half showed significant changes in priorities across the three assessments of the opinionnaire. Evidence from this study seems to …

The Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire Form XII was administered to 212 University of Northern Iowa …

Physical Science Workshop Course For Elementary Teachers, Glen T. Clayton, Harry D. Downing, Thomas O. Callaway Jan 1982

Physical Science Workshop Course For Elementary Teachers, Glen T. Clayton, Harry D. Downing, Thomas O. Callaway

Faculty Publications

Science for elementary school grades K-6 varies somewhat in content from one textbook series to another, but it is fairly common that 40-60% of the material covered is directly related to physics. These texts suggest that certain learning activities such as experiments, demonstrations, and observations be carried out by the teacher and the class. Often the apparatus for a learning activity is to be constructed from simple, readily available materials. The typical elementary school teacher has had little experience in performing experiments and is often frustrated in his/her attempts at carrying out the suggested learning activity. To meet this need …

There's Nothing New Under The Sun, Geraldine E. Larocque

Faculty Publications

The attempt to unite theory and practice in the education of English teachers has taken many forms: courses in which theoreticians attempt to illuminate the practice of professional teachers or student teachers; situations in which teacher-education faculty cooperate with teachers; student teachers; and the community; in order to make programs more responsive to community needs; and instruction in which school-based apprenticeship is stressed. Until research can provide a firm base for the structure and content of methods courses; professionals must rely on their own judgment as to the placement of emphasis. An adaptation of Lee J. Cronbach's research paradigm; used …
