The Rural Cemetery Movement: The Origins Of Cemeteries Like Yours, Jeffrey Smith

The “rural cemetery movement” started in 1831 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, when Mount Auburn Cemetery opened. Others followed in other cities, responding to many of the same needs and cultural priorities. Paradoxically, these “rural” cemeteries were anything but rural in our context; they were a uniquely urban phenomenon, albeit located outside cities in the adjacent countryside. Within a decade or so, the rest of the ten largest cities in the United States (and a number of the smaller ones as well) had similar burial sites—Laurel Hill in Philadelphia, Green-Wood in Brooklyn, Green Mount in Baltimore, and Mount Hope in Rochester opened …

On April 14, 2012 at IMSA’s 25th Anniversary Gala, members of the IMSA community celebrated the 90th birthday of a state and national treasure—Dr. Leon Lederman. It was a fitting tribute for a man who changed the lives and futures of generations of talented students in Illinois by giving them a home where they could reach their full potential.

Rich Taylor, whose experience in fine arts includes 27 years in executive leadership posts with the Walt Disney company, is the Dean of the Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts at the University of Oklahoma.

In 1997, the Kirkpatrick Foundation convened a meeting of faculty from the various arts departments of public and private universities and colleges in Oklahoma. The purpose was to identify resources and possible collaborative opportunities that would ultimately heighten Oklahoma’s cultural education climate. The group continued to meet regularly, and over time friendships and partnerships were developed among campus faculty of singular institutions as well as among faculty across institutional lines.

Reading Recovery (RR) is a research-based, highly effective, short-term intervention, which has demonstrated positive results in Iowa for the lowest achieving readers and writers in first grade. Since it was first introduced to Iowa in 1991, the implementation of Reading Recovery has expanded to districts across the state. Currently, over 5,000 Iowa first graders receive the intervention annually.

Each year in Iowa 75% or more of the children who receive a full series of Reading Recovery lessons successfully achieve average or better reading and writing competency. When this happens the intervention is “discontinued”. These results have been replicated for several …
