Invisibly Visible: A Study Of African-American Females And Their Ascent To The Superintendency, Tracy M. Hinds

Dissertations

African-American women leading school districts as public school superintendents of schools is rare. It is even more infrequent for multiple African-American women to serve in the position of superintendent of schools in the same state. This historical qualitative study investigated and documented the history of African-American women who served in the position of public superintendent of schools in the state of Missouri. Research on the topic of African-American female superintendents is scarce. This study contributed to the growing body of research focused on the personal stories and experiences of African-American women who served and continue to serve as superintendents. The …

This study investigated individual factors and milestones which may assist institutions in predicting first to second semester retention rates of freshmen students. While the data examined were limited to the student population enrolled at a rural community college, implications from the study could be meaningful for all institutions of higher education. The investigators examined extant data to determine whether exam scores, graduating high school GPAs/rank, and Pell Grant eligibility could be used as predictor variables in identifying students at-risk of leaving the institution. In addition, key milestones (time of registration, participation in a first year experience (FYE) course, declaring a …

Black Spaces In White Places: Toward Black Educational Imagination, Shenita Nicole Mayes Aug 2016

Black Spaces In White Places: Toward Black Educational Imagination, Shenita Nicole Mayes

Dissertations

Using a combination of Critical Race Theory, self-determination, and Black radical imagination as a theoretical framework, this dissertation explores how the features of Black educational imagination – liberatory pedagogy, critically conscious acts, and a revitalized Black teaching force – animate Black school space. These spaces facilitate the re-humanization of Black people, the recognition of counter-narratives as valuable, and the consideration of racial trauma in hiring practices. Each space represents a meaningful recognition of Black radical imagination and therefore inform my actions in the workplace. I argue that a possible path towards liberating Black people from racialized oppression is paved by …

Classroom Communities Of Practice, Angela Marie Muse Aug 2016

Classroom Communities Of Practice, Angela Marie Muse

Dissertations

Are classrooms preparing students with the literacy skills they need for school, work, and life? When students don't meet expectations, educators tend to seek answers in innovative programs or research-based practices that promise success. The practices teachers use, however, are neither selected nor enacted in a vacuum. To fully understand what is happening in a classroom, one needs to consider not only the instructional practices teachers use but also the context in which teachers select and enact these practices and the effect these practices have on our students. The impetus for this study came from a broader desire to dig …

Another 40 Years Of Inequity: Two-Tier Schooling As The Lasting Legacy Of Desegregation Policy In St. Louis, Missouri, Renee L. Racette

Dissertations

The St. Louis Public Schools of St. Louis, Missouri were at one time the second largest segregated school district in the United States. In the years since Brown v. Board of Education ruling in 1954 and 1955, the school district of St. Louis has been attempting to desegregate as ordered by the courts. A group of North Side parents brought a lawsuit against the district and the State of Missouri that, after many years of litigation, found both parties to be liable for maintaining segregated schools, but an out-of-court settlement was reached. As a result of this suit and subsequent …

Best Practices In Student Persistence And Completion: A Program Evaluation Of Three Student Services Units In A Rural Community College, Antionette Sterling, Felicita A. Myers

Dissertations

Student services units in community colleges are now encouraged to assume a larger role in supporting student retention and are charged with implementing intervention strategies that improve student success and persistence. Yet, many community colleges, especially those in rural communities, struggle to define the role of student services in improving retention, especially between the first and second semesters. A process program evaluation of three student services units at a rural Missouri community college was conducted in order to assess whether the outputs (activities) identified in the logic models for each of the three units had occurred. At the conclusion of …

Addressing The Tension Between Open Access Admission And Improving Retention Rates At Crowder College, Earl Ray Macam, Brittany Lynn Neunuebel

Dissertations

Most community colleges embrace an open-access admission policy. At the same time, community colleges are pressured to improve retention rates. This project sought to address the tension between open-access and improved retention rates by determining which markers of academic preparedness predicted fall-to-fall retention in past admission cohorts of a community college. Data for three incoming classes of new students were analyzed using two separate logistical regressions, one on Pre-Admission/Enrollment variables and one on Post-Matriculation variables. The analysis of Pre-Admission/Enrollment variables, suggested that students who were male, 23 years or older and who had a low ACT Math Sub Score, and/or …

What Happens In The Classroom?: How School Culture Influences And Impacts Professional Development And Teacher Practice, Dawn Kasal Finley Aug 2016

What Happens In The Classroom?: How School Culture Influences And Impacts Professional Development And Teacher Practice, Dawn Kasal Finley

Dissertations

Schools spend a great deal of time, resources, and money seeking ways to both understand and increase student achievement on state standardized test that scores have become the customary measure of a school’s quality and success. Due to this narrow focus on standards and testing becoming more and more central in education, schools and teachers often do not implement the pedagogical strategies that work to increase student learning and thinking (Burke, 2010; Langer, 2001; Christenbury & Kelly, 1983; Nystrand, 1997; Wiggins & McTighe, 2005). In addition to a lack of focus on pedagogical practices, schools often ignore the impact culture …

Improving Teacher Education In Missouri: Expanding Clinical Experiences To Broader Contextual Experiences, Julie Elizabeth Smith Sodey Aug 2016

Improving Teacher Education In Missouri: Expanding Clinical Experiences To Broader Contextual Experiences, Julie Elizabeth Smith Sodey

Dissertations

Comprehensive improvement of America’s schools cannot occur without a dedicated, resourceful, and skillfully prepared pool of teachers. The growing emphasis on high-stakes testing and standards-based curriculum has resulted in unprecedented levels of scrutiny on schools, students, and especially teachers. Classroom teachers, once tasked primarily with educating students in core subject areas and rules of modern decorum and democracy, have now assumed a position of much greater consequence. Teachers often have to fulfill additional roles such as counselor, nurse, behavioral therapist, and social worker but are not adequately prepared for these responsibilities. This results in poorly supported students who are unable …

Intentional And Unintentional Misreporting On Self-Report Measures Of Sexually Aggressive Behavior, Emily Strang

Dissertations

The development of effective sexual aggression prevention programs for men relies on data garnered from perpetration research. However, few studies have focused on understanding and improving self-report measures of sexual aggression perpetration (Kolivas & Gross, 2007). The current studies explored the impact of men’s intentional and unintentional misreporting on two measures of sexual aggression perpetration (SES-LFP: Koss et al., 2007; SSS: Peterson, et al., 2010). Study 1 (N=93) used a Bogus Pipeline (BPL) methodology to determine if men intentionally underreport their use of aggressive strategies on traditionally administered measures of perpetration. Compared to men in a control condition, men in …

Introducing Classroom Labeling As An Innovative Method To Inform Educational Practice, Roberta Lynn Crawford May 2016

Introducing Classroom Labeling As An Innovative Method To Inform Educational Practice, Roberta Lynn Crawford

Dissertations

In-service seminars and one-shot workshops are the primary methods used for the on-going professional development of instructors, but these methods have been shown to be ineffective and an inadequate way to provide teacher training (Winton & McCollum, 2008). Classroom labeling is proposed as a way of providing knowledge utilization and an alternative to in-service education for preschool teachers by intentionally applying layers of information directly to the learning environment through visual displays, usually in the form of posters. Instructional exhibits typically have only been used to enhance the learning experience of the children. Through the use of classroom labeling, adult …

Some districts in the state of Missouri have begun to reform their process to address 21st century teaching approaches and strategies. While examining and applying lessons from civil service and institutions of higher learning, aspects of tenure and post-tenure review can be applied to public k-12 school districts …

Missouri's Missing Education Policy: Support Systems For Districts With High Student Mobility Rates, Mary Lee Hardy May 2016

Missouri's Missing Education Policy: Support Systems For Districts With High Student Mobility Rates, Mary Lee Hardy

Dissertations

Missing in Missouri is state policy defining student mobility or how to measure it consistently across all districts. High mobility disproportionately impacts schools with a high poverty rate which creates a need for policy centered on this topic. Evidence indicates that children who change to a new school after the start of the regular school term negatively impacts not only that child, but the school district, teachers and staff, as well as the current students. Typically, these children arrive two to three years behind grade level academically and have social concerns. In order to best serve these students, districts need …

However, most of the current research shows that despite numerous interventions and philosophies, children who are deaf continue …

School Based Mental Health As It Relates To Student Outcomes, Kathleen Kelly Vierod May 2016

School Based Mental Health As It Relates To Student Outcomes, Kathleen Kelly Vierod

Dissertations

Over twenty percent of youth have a major mental illness, yet only approximately one third of these children receive treatment. Many students struggle with social emotional learning deficits, mental health concerns, chronic poverty and trauma, which significantly impacts their ability to learn. These concerns affect academic achievement as demonstrated by lower graduation rates, higher suspension rates, higher absenteeism, and lower grade point averages. School-based mental health practices are a proactive measure to improve student outcomes for all students. The Every Student Succeeds Act provides increased opportunity for schools to implement evidence-based programs to address these concerns.

The Paradox Of Impoverished Missouri Schools: The School Districts In Missouri That Need More Often Get Less, William John Armon May 2016

The Paradox Of Impoverished Missouri Schools: The School Districts In Missouri That Need More Often Get Less, William John Armon

Dissertations

Most states in the United States guarantee all citizens the right to an adequate education. Missouri passed SB 287 in 2004 with this exact purpose in mind. The bill was designed to ensure that students in high-poverty districts receive a greater share of funds from the state to offset shortfalls in local revenue. The new funding formula has certainly created great disparity in the amounts of state funds various districts receive. In addition, the formula recognizes the financial need of districts that have a high percentage of students living in poverty. Despite this recognition, adequacy has not been achieved for …
