We conceive of education broadly and see it occurring in a diverse set of places and spaces, in classrooms and communities. We want to challenge our educational researcher colleagues to leverage the power of action research to better effect change within their schools and communities. We will point to constructive steps for this new way of working in the papers of the special issue we introduce.

The article asserts the need for educators to converse on the multiple minority youth issue. It mentions the definition of multiple minority youth as those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and questioning (LGBTQ), racial minorities and people with disabilities, the promotion of the inclusion of LGBTQ and other social identity variables in the intersectionality of minority status and oppression, and privilege and oppression with regard to multiple minority social identities.

Sister Cities International (SCI) is a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network that creates and strengthens partnerships between U.S. communities and international communities. Sister Cities International was founded by President Eisenhower during a White House Summit on Citizen Diplomacy on September 11-12, 1956. Sister Cities International strives to build global cooperation at the municipal level, promote cultural understanding and stimulate economic and educational development.

One cannot study the history of democracy in the United States without investigating the courageous vision of Alice Paul. In From equal suffrage to equal rights, Christine Lunardini has written the definitive history of Alice Paul’s contribution to equality and democracy. Lunardini (xiii) documents the efforts of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Carrie Chapman Catt of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), and Lunardini observes that Carrie Chapman Catt, as leader of NAWSA in 1913, thought that woman suffrage would not be attained in her lifetime.

A pair of co-teachers in a U.S., mid-western, suburban school district participated in a co-teacher training and subsequent research study, in an effort to encourage role changes that would increase the engagement of students with disabilities in the classroom, This case study presents the experiences of two co-teachers teaching in an inclusive, seventh grade science class. The teacher participants were first trained through voluntary participation in countywide, three-day in-service on co-teaching and brain-based learning and then interviewed. As colleges and universities prepare pre-service teachers to teach in inclusive classrooms, it is important to understand college students’ schema of diversity. Part of creating an inclusive classroom culture is to understand how children view similarities and differences in others, and how to create a culture of acceptance. Let's Ask The Kids: Consumer Constructions Of Co-Teaching, Dusty Columbia Embury, Stephen Kroeger

The purpose of this study was to investigate student perceptions of co-teachers. Students with disabilities are more than twice as likely as their peers without disabilities to leave school early (Kortering & Braziel, 2002; Wilson & Michaels, 2006). Students in two inclusive classrooms in an urban middle school participated in interviews about their perceptions of being in a co-taught class. Data from the student interviews indicated that students were positive about having two adults in the classroom, however, willingness to ask for assistance varied across environments. Acceptance of instruction and discipline from either teacher also varied from classroom to classroom. …

The social studies teacher preparation program described in this article is a 5th-year Masters of Education degree and licensure program—a graduate program preceded by a 4-year history or social science education degree offered by the College of Liberal Arts. The social studies graduate program aims at preparing teaching candidates to learn knowledge and skills necessary to plan and teach technology-rich lesson plans and resource units. Teaching candidates are required to apply new technology skills to actual classrooms, while collaborating with cooperating teachers.
