In recent years, much attention has been given to the phonics skills of teachers and prospective teachers. Beginning in the early 60's with Aaron (1960), Gagon (1960), and The Torch Lighter: Tomorrow's Teachers of Reading (Austin & Morrison, 1961), it was noted that teacher training programs were deficient in the area of phonics training, and that, resultantly, prospective teachers showed a deficit in their knowledge of phonics. These results have been upheld by Ramsey (1962), Schubert (1962), and Spache and Baggett (1965), all of whom found that experienced teachers and/or prospective teachers showed a marked deficit in the basic phonics …

Cross- age tutoring in the elementary school has long been recognized as a valid means of learning for both the tutor and the tutee; (Frager & Stern, 1970). Many studies even show that the tutors make greater gains than the tutees, (Cloward, 1967). Like many validated educational innovations, however, cross- age tutoring is not practiced to any great extent in the schools, particularly the elementary schools. The elementary teacher may well ask why teach children's literature when each day's schedule is already crowded with mathematics, reading, spelling, English, science, social studies, physical education, art, music, values, career awareness, and all subjects that come under these broad headings. This article will suggest some ways that children's literature can be used in the elementary curriculum to achieve reading goals that improve on traditional reading programs. Children's literature in no way replaces these programs, rather, it extends and enriches the reading curriculum while encouraging positive reading attitudes.

Reading is a most complex form of behavior, yet it is basic to all academic tasks. One must be able to successfully interpret the meaning of words to function in the academic environment. Unfortunately, there are thousands of freshmen annually entering our institutions of higher learning without the reading skills needed to complete college level work. This problem is most acute in two-year colleges with a student population that is relatively disadvantaged compared to students in four-year colleges. Two year colleges have more high-risk students in terms of their chances to complete degree aspirations than do four-year colleges and universities.

Glenda C. Petrini, a Social Studies teacher at Thoreau Intermediate School in Vienna, Virginia, had tried for five years to teach the inquiry method to her students before she tried using reading skills as a vehicle for the comprehension of inquiry. In her article which follows, Ms. Petrini tells how she used the knowledge which she gained of reading skills to instruct her students in ways that would significantly strengthen their essay writing. Ms. Petrini presents convincing evidence that the teaching of reading and the teaching of writing can be combined very effectively.

The Association for General and Liberal Studies serves as "a forum for professional people concerned with undergraduate general and liberal education in each of the several divisions of the curriculum." At least, that is what the Bylaws indicate. But as I talk to people about the organization several more specific questions keep emerging: " What exactly is AGLS anyway?" "Why should I spend $10 a year to support AGLS?" " What is Interdisciplinary Perspectives?" These questions suggest that the Association has as its first problem - to use the current jargon - a very large "communication gap."

When we discuss the relationship between general education and work, our own semantic myths can easily trap us. General education, liberal education, and career education are labels which we have used to categorize bundles of learning experiences. Although frequently useful to simplify thought, the educational concepts behind these labels often represent illusory rather than actual goals and their meaning assumes a protoplasmic character, visible but elusive, constantly shifting in shape.
