The Athens Of The West: Education In Nashville, 1780-1860, Timothy Augustus Sweatman Aug 1996

The Athens Of The West: Education In Nashville, 1780-1860, Timothy Augustus Sweatman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Nashville, Tennessee, is known as the Athens of the South because of its reputation as a center of learning. The city’s commitment to education goes back to the days of its founding as a village on the extreme Western frontier of the United States. In 1785, five years after Nashville was first settled, Davidson Academy, an advanced classical school, was established. At the same time, numerous private schools operated in the Nashville area, providing many of the region’s children with a basic education.

During the first quarter of the nineteenth century Nashville moved closer to becoming a major educational center. …

Marital And Personal-Life Satisfaction Among Married, Female Graduate Students: A Qualitative Analysis Of Value Conflicts, Alecia Gall Aug 1996

Marital And Personal-Life Satisfaction Among Married, Female Graduate Students: A Qualitative Analysis Of Value Conflicts, Alecia Gall

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Fifteen married, female graduate students enrolled full-time during the fall of 1994 were interviewed and audio-tape recorded, guaranteed confidentiality, and assigned pseudonyms. Questions covered the topics of values, experiences in graduate school and marriage, the impact of children, pressures, conflicts, support systems, and coping strategies. I obtained a listing of all married, female graduate students enrolled at a regional state university located in the south central United States during the fall semester of 1994. From this list I identified and contacted those fulltime students who had taken no more than a five-year break between degrees and were under the age …

The Effect Of Ses On Parent Ratings Of Termperament And Behavior, Heather Brown Aug 1996

The Effect Of Ses On Parent Ratings Of Termperament And Behavior, Heather Brown

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present researcher examined the relationship of SES and parent agreement on ratings of temperament and behavior. Specifically, mother and father ratings were obtained on the Temperament Assessment Battery for Children-Revised (TAB-R) and Conners Parent Rating Scale-48 (CPRS-48) for a sample of 64 preschool children within low, middle, and high SES groups. Internal consistencies were established to be .70 or above on the majority of scales on the TAB-R and CPRS-48. The majority of correlations for mother and father ratings were moderate to high on scales of the TAB-R and CPRS-48, with each scale demonstrating significant, moderate correlations for the …

Factors Which Effect Parental Agreement On Ratings Of Temperament And Behavior Problems, Elizabeth Edmonson Aug 1996

Factors Which Effect Parental Agreement On Ratings Of Temperament And Behavior Problems, Elizabeth Edmonson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This investigator conducted a critical analysis of the literature on parental agreement on temperament and behavior problems ratings and the factors which impact parental agreement. Information was gathered through an extensive search of the computer databases, Educational Resource Information Center (ERIC, 1966-1996) and PsycLIT (PsycINFO, 1973-1995) using key terms - such as temperament, behavior, behavior problems, rating scales, parental agreement, parent ratings, socioeconomic status (SES), gender, and congruence. Results of the search identified several factors that are associated with ratings. These were socio-economic status (SES), gender, and marital satisfaction/parental psychological status. An annotated bibliography and tables were created for the …

The Contribution Of Children's Peer Relations To Adjustment In An Ungraded Primary Program, Daniel Diehl Aug 1996

The Contribution Of Children's Peer Relations To Adjustment In An Ungraded Primary Program, Daniel Diehl

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

While research in same-age classrooms has found a significant relationship between peer relations and school adjustment, little is known about the contribution peer relations makes to school adjustment in the mixed-age classroom. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the contributions that peer acceptance, social status, social behavior, and age relative to classmates make to children's attitudes toward school and their achievement in mixed-age (ungraded) primary classrooms. Children's attitudes toward reading, math, and science were positively related to reading, math, and science achievement scores. Children's achievement could be predicted from children's attitudes toward school and peer relations variables. …

The Effect Of Child Gender On Parent Ratings Of Temperament And Behavior, Brent Beck Jul 1996

The Effect Of Child Gender On Parent Ratings Of Temperament And Behavior, Brent Beck

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Parent ratings of their children play a significant role in the assessment process. However, past research on rating scales has focused largely on teacher ratings. Less frequent studies on parent rating scales have predominant!}' used mothers' ratings and omitted fathers' ratings. In addition, research comparing parent ratings have produced inconsistent results when describing effects of gender of the child and rater. In this study, parents of 35 three to five-year-old preschoolers rated their child on the Temperament Assessment Battery for Children: Parent Form (T AB-R) and the Conners Parent Rating Scales-48 (CPRS-48). Adequate reliability for mothers and father ratings were …

A Study Of Student Health Services In Four-Year Post-Secondary Institutions, Timothy Laugh May 1996

A Study Of Student Health Services In Four-Year Post-Secondary Institutions, Timothy Laugh

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to address any changes in select organizational and director or CEO attributes between 1989 and 1994, as well as, to determine whether or not college student health services are systematically evaluating their programs and incorporating efficiency measures used in other health care settings. The population of study was student health services at four-year institutions of post-secondary education in the United States. This researcher resurveyed the sample used by Kevin E. Charles in 1989 in order to allow the evaluation of temporal trends. The sample was a stratified, random sample of 400 institutions. Data were …

A Study Of Why Some Learners Are More Successful Than Others At Acquiring A Second Language: The Roles Of Personality, Attitude & Motivation, Azah Yusof May 1996

A Study Of Why Some Learners Are More Successful Than Others At Acquiring A Second Language: The Roles Of Personality, Attitude & Motivation, Azah Yusof

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this thesis is to convey and to support my belief that learners' affective domain, which consist of their personalities, attitudes, and motivation are responsible for causing the variation in the levels of second language proficiency of second language learners. My concern is to point out or support others who believe that second language learners are not machines that are able and willing to be programmed; they have feelings and attitudes which in turn govern their personalities and motivation. I also believe that the main focus of second language teaching should be on the "persons" learning the language, …
