Programmed Reading Instruction Versus Traditional Reading Instruction And Their Relation To Science Achievement, Harold Eugene Garner
Programmed Reading Instruction Versus Traditional Reading Instruction And Their Relation To Science Achievement, Harold Eugene Garner
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This doctoral research was conducted to determine if there was a statistical difference in achievement between fourth grade students who were instructed through a programmed reading approach and those fourth grade students who were instructed in the traditional reading methods with a basal text series. Secondly, whether the same fourth grade students who were instructed by the programmed reading method would achieve significantly higher gain scores in fourth grade science than those students who were instructed in the traditional reading method. Analysis of variance was used to analyze the results and the level of significance was set at the 0.05 …

The Dichotomy Between The Actual And The Perceived Role Of The Elementary Guidance Counselor In The State Of Massachusetts, Frederick E. Ellis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
With the nationwide concern for accountability in education, the elementary school counselor is often the center of controversy. What is the role of the elementary counselor? How does he define is role and how does his administrators define it? Is there a difference between his view of his actual functions and those he feels he should perform and does his view differ from that of administrators and counselor educators? How relevant are current educational and certification requirements? An approach to answering these questions is to survey the groups involved to discover their attitudes toward and views of the elementary guidance …

A Program For The Training Of Elementary Art-Music Teachers, Edward A. Boynton
A Program For The Training Of Elementary Art-Music Teachers, Edward A. Boynton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The writer has had experience as a supervisor of music at the elementary and secondary levels. This experience combined with the development of courses to suit the program for an elementary teacher training institution provided the background for the development of this project.
The problem, as it appeared to the writer, was that in spite of valiant efforts on the part of music supervisors and art teachers’ elementary students did not comprehend music or art as an aesthetic whole. The methods in use, in most Maine schools, presented the arts as a technical skill to be mastered by the student …

Implementation Of Migrant Education Program In The Richgrove School District, Bob L. Blancett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Justification of the problem.
A significant percentage of the children attending school in the Richgrove School District are identified as migrant students. Migratory children often were two or more grades below grade level in reading, spoke little or no English, tended to withdraw from the school environment, had poor self-concepts, lacked nutritionally balanced meals, and had few, if any, previous health records.
The present study is an outgrowth of the Richgrove School District's effort to develop and provide an educational program designed to meet the needs of migratory children residing within its attendance boundaries.

A Follow-Up Study (1970-1972) Of The 1969 State Scholarship Program In The State Of Rhode Island, Fred R. Bocchio, Anthony M. Ferraro
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Introduction
The philosophy and objectives underlying the Rhode Island State Scholarship Program encompassed severa1 basic assumptions about secondary education. Some of these assumptions have changed substantially over the past fifteen years and deserve close consideration. The new emphasis toward equalizing educational opportunities had been reflected in the changing philosophy that guided the administration of student financial aid. The genesis of most aid programs could be found in a concept that fostered the belief in a system built entirely upon meritocracy. This approach provided aid to students with high achievement and measured potential, irrespective of financial need. Educators seeing the inequity …

Counseling For The Seventies: A Compendium Of Published Articles, Joseph Henry Koch
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This article, which appeared in the January '72 edition of The School Counselor, talks about what counselors have done, doing, and what the author, a school counselor, thinks they should be doing. He discusses some factors operating to narrow the counselor's role: the student stereotype of counselors as "schedule-changers," the administrative view of counseling as a clerical function, the "psychiatric myth" which casts any person in a helping profession in the role of dream analyst and explorer of the dark unconscious. The writer sees counseling as the major pupil personnel service available on the school campus. Counseling should be concerned …

An Inquiry Into The Piagetian Tradition In America As A Basis For A Philosophy Of Education At The Communityy College Level: A Quasi-Experimental Approach, Clinton J. Humbolt
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of a structural-developmental approach as a basis for a philosophy of education for the public community college of the Midwestern United States. The structural developmental approach was explored within the broader cognitive studies of the Piagetian tradition in America. The method of research employed was a combination of analysis of relevant literature and empirical investigation at a community college. This combination was explored in order to determine the possible abstraction of a structural-developmental pattern as a potential base for theory building. A research instrument was used to assess the …

A Comparison Of Third Grade Reading Practices, Objectives, And Achievment Test Results Between A Conventional Program And A Behavioral Objective Approach Program, Charles Henry Massey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The study was concerned with investigating student achievement testing results, age and sex differences, and teaching practices between a behavioral objective type program and a convetional type program (arbitrarily defined) for the teaching of reading to third grade children as measured by standardized test instruments.
Thirty-one third grade students (16 boys and 15 girls) in the experimental class, with a median age of eight years, were compared with a control class of 33 students (19 boys and 14 girls), with a median age of nine years, as available small samples. Both groups were taught by one teacher.
The instructional materials …
Self-Actualization And Persistence In Selected Vocational Curricula For First-Time Entering Students At A Community College, Charles J. Mast
Self-Actualization And Persistence In Selected Vocational Curricula For First-Time Entering Students At A Community College, Charles J. Mast
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Investigated personality factors associated with self-actualization among first time entering students at a predominately trade-technical community college. The Ss were 529 students enrolled in liberal arts and trade-technical programs. The Ss were administered the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) and the results formed the basis of two analyses.
I. A 2x2x2 (eight cells) factorial analysis included length of attendance, vocational choice, and age, applied to each of the 12 POI scales. It was found that: (1) POI measures did not differentiate between persisters and drop-outs over a one semester period; (2) that liberal arts students received better POI scores than did …

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Art Curriculum And Leisure Time Activities At The Eighth Grade Level, Ida Kugler
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The communications media have directed attention to the fact that the United States have a people with time on their hands and have stated that as a people the nation is recognized for work and workmanship, but that individuals do not know how to use wisely leisure time which the shorter workweek, makes possible through science and technology.
Obviously the prevailing leisure problem appears to be one of education, and art education, a part of education, appears to be an area in school where to a degree students can make discoveries and further develop art experiences into self-chosen, enjoyable and …
