Recent interest towards the implementation of flipped (or inverted) classroom models parallelsthe wide availability of technology and the shift from lecture-based teaching methods towardsstudent-centered teaching methods in undergraduate engineering education. Online Occupational Education In Community Colleges: Prevalence And Contextual Factors, Rod P. Githens, Fashaad L. Crawford, Timothy M. Sauer

This study examined the current state of online occupational programs in community colleges and explored issues related to institutional, economic, and social indicators that influence (a) the offering of online programs and (b) the programmatic connection to workforce development needs. This project is the first national study that categorizes and inventories specific types of online occupational programs in community colleges. The study included a national random sample of 321 institutions in the United States. Data were collected through institutional websites, statewide websites, follow-up emails, and phone inquiries to institutions. The following sections summarize key findings.

Community colleges in the United States have become major providers of human resource development services, particularly through offering workforce development training to local employers. The addition of workforce development services to community colleges is a fairly recent phenomenon. Some see workforce development efforts as diluting community colleges’ historic mission of providing affordable and accessible opportunities for students to transfer to four-year institutions. The addition of online training has created additional stressors, due to increases in costs, opportunities for outsourcing, and increased opportunity for serving those outside of the local community. As organizations increasingly recognize the shortcomings of scientific management approaches and traditional top-down approaches to change, there is an increasing openness to new lenses for understanding change. Chaos Theory, with its roots in the natural sciences, provides a holistic approach for understanding the dynamic and fluid nature of organizations. This paper provides a review of literature that outlines the origins and basic principles of Chaos Theory, applies the concepts to organizations, and connects the concept to human resource development.

Abstract Purpose - This paper identifies barriers that hinder tacit knowledge transfer in a franchise environment and offers a compendium of solutions that encourage franchisees and franchisors to leverage tacit knowledge as a resource for competitive advantage. Design/methodology/approach - Drawing from the research on franchise organizations there are five barriers to tacit knowledge transfer that present a challenge to both vertical and horizontal information flow in a franchise environment. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) employee resource groups have brought about substantial organizational change within corporations. Capitalist structures have enabled these changes to occur more quickly in the private sector than within the public sector. In this article, I explore how capitalism has converged with two approaches of organizing around sexuality: identity politics and queerness. As a result of this convergence, human resource development has occurred at the individual, organizational, and societal levels. Critical approaches to HRD do not focus solely on improving organizational performance; instead, they address previously undiscussable issues such as power, politics, class, alternative work structures, sexism, racism, and heterosexism. As critical HRD often seeks to raise problems instead of immediately solve them, it is sometimes criticized for being elitist or detached from practice. This article addresses how critical approaches to action research can allow practitioners and researchers to integrate critical approaches into actual practice. First-Year Impact Of An Early Reading First Project On Language And Early Reading Skill Development, Rachelle K. Hackett, Matthew B. Russell

This study is of a federally-funded Early Reading First project aimed at improving school readiness by creating “Centers of Excellence” which focus on language and early reading skills development of low-income preschool children. The project consisted of a content standards-based curriculum and instructional program, literacy enriched classrooms, ongoing professional development, and parent involvement. The analysis focuses on 65 randomly assigned preschoolers attending state preschools (treatment = 37 and control = 28), enrolled for at least 18 weeks, who would be eligible by birth date for entry into public kindergarten the following year. Differences Between Resolved Versus Unresolved Adolescents On Selected Measures Of Behavior And Cognitive Processes, Linda L. Webster, Rachelle K. Hackett

This study investigated differences between unresolved attachment, reports of behavior, and associated cognitive processes in a maltreatment sample. Participants were 22 adolescents with a history of maltreatment. Measures included the Adult Attachment Projective (George, West, & Pettem, 1997), the Behavioral Assessment System for Children (Reynolds & Kamphaus, 1998), and selected scales from the Woodcock-Johnson Third Edition Tests of Cognitive Ability (Woodcock, McGrew, & Mather, 2001). Results found that parent ratings on five BASC subscales were significantly different for resolved versus unresolved adolescents, and adolescent self-reports were found to differ on four BASC subscales and one BASC composite.
