An Educational Survey Of Daisy Community, Hamilton County, Tennessee, William Belger Griffin

Masters Theses

At the July, 1922, meeting of the Board of Trustees of the University of Tennessee, President H. A. Morgan submitted a plan for the establishment of a Department of Rural Education in the University whose functions should be: first, to study intensively rural school conditions in the state; second, to train teachers for the rural schools; third, to cooperate with the state school authorities in every possible way to make the work of rural schools more nearly meet the needs of the rural communities.

Molecular Organic Compounds Of Ortho And Para Aminobenzoic Acids, Weldon E. Cate Aug 1932

Molecular Organic Compounds Of Ortho And Para Aminobenzoic Acids, Weldon E. Cate

Masters Theses

The nature of the linkage between the components of molecular organic compounds is not clearly understood, although the existence of this type of compound has been known for many years. Since efforts to explain the structure of molecular compounds by the different theories of valence have met with only partial success, a series of investigations is being carried out in the Chemistry Laboratories of the University of Tennessee in an effort to formulate a theory by which the structure and properties of this interesting but perplexing type of compound may be explained.

The object of this investigation of the molecular …

A Comparative Study Of The Teachers Of Sevier County, Tennessee, With The Teachers Of Dickson, Hickman, Morgan And White Counties, Tennessee, Okla R. Sarten Aug 1932

A Comparative Study Of The Teachers Of Sevier County, Tennessee, With The Teachers Of Dickson, Hickman, Morgan And White Counties, Tennessee, Okla R. Sarten

Masters Theses

The primary purpose of this thesis is to make a comparative study of the status of the teachers of Sevier County with the teachers of Dickson, Hickman, Morgan and White Counties, the area, population, amount of taxable property, and number of teachers being approximately the same, in order to ascertain whether or not Sevier County is keeping pace with comparable counties in the character of teachers employed.

The development of children will, in very larger measure, depend upon the character of their teachers. Therefore, it is exceedingly important that frequent inventories be taken of the teaching corps in order to …

Survey Of Intestinal Parasites At The Knox County Industrial School, Mary Lance Vance Jun 1932

Survey Of Intestinal Parasites At The Knox County Industrial School, Mary Lance Vance

Masters Theses

Summary: A study of the whole school accommodating two hundred twenty-seven children, one hundred and five girls and one hundred and twenty-two boys, shows that 31.6 per cent of the children harbor no parasite, 47.7 per cent are parasitized by E. coli, I. butschlii, E. nana, C. mesnilli or G. lamblia, which are considered as symbiots. Therefore, a total of 52.3 per cent harbor pathogenic organisms. Ascaris infection occurs in the largest number, 24.2 per cent, then E. histolytica, 15.5 per cent, H. nana, 11.0 per cent, Necator, 7.5 per cent, Whipworm 5.0 per cent.

Molecular Organic Compounds Of Picryl Chloride, Kenneth C. Hart Aug 1931

Molecular Organic Compounds Of Picryl Chloride, Kenneth C. Hart

Masters Theses

It has been known for a long period of time that two saturated organic compounds are capable of uniting to form a molecular or addition compound. This being true, the idea of the present valence theory must be modified. Of the newer theories advanced by numerous investigators none seems to entirely solve the problem. It remains for someone to present a theory which will explain the linkage of all addition compounds. With this as the ultimate aim, a series of investigations is being conducted in this laboratory in an endeavor to give more accurate information concerning the formation of addition …

The Caves Of East Tennessee, Berlen Moneymaker Aug 1929

The Caves Of East Tennessee, Berlen Moneymaker

Masters Theses

This study was undertaken for the purpose of securing and bringing together scientific information concerning the cavern of the eastern part of Tennessee. Although the presence of such natural phenomena has long been known, the caves of East Tennessee, with one exception, have not previously been described. In recent years, a few of the larger and more favorably located caves have been developed for commercial purposes. These have been widely advertized, and have become well known throughout the eastern part of the State. The caves in East Tennessee that have been developed, or are being developed, are: Craighead Caverns, Cumberland …

Vocational Education In The High School Curriculum, Robert Leeman Bryan Aug 1928

Vocational Education In The High School Curriculum, Robert Leeman Bryan

Masters Theses

The title of this study "Vocational Education in the High School Curriculum" is more comprehensive than the study. The object of the study is to show, in part, the present status of Vocational Education in the High school Curriculum, with a proposed plan for Vocational Education in a specified school.

Briefly the study attempts to answer the following questions: Is our system of education wholly or partially democratic? What is the attitude of the Federal Government toward Vocational Education? To what extent does the Federal Government finance Vocational Education? To what extent is Vocational Agricultural Education being taught in the …

The Evolution Of The Public School System In Tennessee, John Taliaferro Rennolds Aug 1925

The Evolution Of The Public School System In Tennessee, John Taliaferro Rennolds

Masters Theses

(From Introduction)

It is my purpose here, as far as possible, to trace and interpret the educational trend of the public mind in this state and the legislation which was its outcome; also the results, as far as the records make them appear, of this legislation in its practical application and its effects upon public opinion, which again was reflected in the legislation. We shall attempt to follow, as nearly as the meager records, especially before the Civil War, will permit, the trial and error method which has characterized the development of the schools of our State.

The Teaching Of Games In Elementary Schools, A. Watt Hobt Aug 1924

The Teaching Of Games In Elementary Schools, A. Watt Hobt

Masters Theses

(From Introduction)

The great impetus given to games during recent years and the knowledge that play, to be educational, must be taught and supervised, has led to a demand for teachers of play and a resulting demand for college courses for teacher training in play. Many states have recently passed physical education laws requiring play instruction by trained teachers. The play movement has changed according to Rainwater; "From provision for little children to that of all people; from facilities operated during the summer only to those maintained thruout the year; from out-door equipment and activities only to both …

The Preparation And Certification Of High School Teachers With Special Reference To Tennessee, R. A. Moser May 1913

The Preparation And Certification Of High School Teachers With Special Reference To Tennessee, R. A. Moser

Masters Theses

Statistics relative to the actual preparation that the high school teachers of Tennessee have had are very difficult to obtain. At the beginning of the study of this subject, the writer sent the accompanying questionnaire, to all the high school teachers-including both country and city schools-of the state, but the number returned was not sufficient to form any scientific conclusion on the subject. Of the four hundred fifty blanks sent to the various high school teachers of the state only sixty were returned giving the desired information.

Of the sixty returned, twenty-seven hold certificates issued on diplomas which is evidence …
