As a matter of habit I have always given a twelve to fifteen question quiz to my junior high life science students every five to seven classroom days. This was always done on the untested assumption that a more frequent test versus a test given after three to four weeks of study would tend to motivate the student, serve as a learning device, and lessen the amount of cramming and test anxiety experienced by the student.

For a number of years the Iowa Academy has felt a growing need for more effective promotion of science and science education in the state of Iowa. The establishment of a permanent office with a salaried executive secretary is envisioned as a major step toward the accomplishment of this goal. The laboratory approach has been extensively utilized in the contemporary high school science courses, but has not been utilized in the junior high sequence to the same extent. Realizing the need for a coordinated science pro g r a m for grades seven through nine which would incorporate the contemporary objectives and procedures, the Florida State Department of Science Education applied for and received a grant from the U.S. Office of Education to develop such a program.

The reasons I state for this assumption are: fungi are interesting; they play an important role in human affairs; fungi are associated with many areas of biological sciences; they are easily utilized in the classroom; and they are easy to obtain and work with.
