Aqip Action Project Gened Curriculum 2009-2010 Summary, Uno Office Of Institutional Effectiveness

Student Learning

For the last three years, the campus has recognized that the current general education curriculum was complex, difficult to assess, and the overall goals for the curriculum were not clearly defined or understood by the faculty, staff, and students. The curriculum nor goals had not been seriously discussed in almost 20 years. In order to address those issues, teams from UNO attended the AAC& U General Education Institutes as well as conferences on General Education and Assessment. Additionally, a General Education Task Force engaged the entire campus in computer facilitated conversations to generate desired student learning outcomes for the general …

Impact Of Passive Vibration On Pressure Pulse Wave Characteristics, M A. Sanchez-Gonzalez, A Wong, F Vicil, R Gil, Song-Young Park, A Figueroa

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

The augmentation index (AIx), a marker of wave reflection, decreases following acute leg exercise. Passive vibration (PV) causes local vasodilation that may reduce AIx. This study investigated the effects of acute PV on wave reflection and aortic hemodynamics. In a crossover fashion 20 (M=9, F=11) healthy young (22±3 year) participants were randomized to 10 min PV or no vibration control (CON) trials. Subjects rested in the supine position with their legs over a vibration platform for the entire session. Radial waveforms were obtained by applanation tonometry before and after 3 min (Post-3) and 30 min (Post-30) of PV (∼5.37 G) …

The Impact Of Parental Military Status On The Achievement, Attendance, And Attitudes Of Fourth Grade Students, Melba Hooker May 2011

The Impact Of Parental Military Status On The Achievement, Attendance, And Attitudes Of Fourth Grade Students, Melba Hooker

Student Work

Military service men and women provide security and services both locally and globally. These services sometimes require deployment and separations of active duty military personnel away from their families. These separations and the subsequent stresses could be substantial in the lives of younger children. Not only can these students be affected emotionally, but the achievement, attendance, and attitudes of these fourth grade students in this study are compared to fourth grade nonmilitary students to evaluate the differences between the two groups. How does the fourth grade military student group measure up to their counterpart?

To address this question, the researcher …

Not All Threats Are Equal, Jeanne L. Surface

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

School leaders must be fully prepared to respond to all types of threats that occur. In order to respond to threats most appropriately the school needs to have a systematic approach that combines education, prevention, intervention, discipline, security and crisis preparedness measures. All threats must be assessed carefully and swiftly balancing the First Amendment rights of the student making the threat and the safety of the school. All threats are not equal but, all must be dealt with.

Assessing The Impact Of Twenty-First Century Rural School Consolidation, Jeanne L. Surface Apr 2011

Assessing The Impact Of Twenty-First Century Rural School Consolidation, Jeanne L. Surface

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

The purpose of the study was to make a qualitative assessment of the impact of school consolidation on several rural Nebraska communities that have recently lost their schools. This research uses a multiple-case study design with interviews conducted in three Nebraska communities. The data from this research fell into four broad themes: social capital changes resulting from consolidation, the effect of the consolidation on the children of the community, the future of the community, and circumstances driving consolidation. Data indicates very differing views about consolidation; respondents with children in school were generally supportive of the consolidation and felt that it …

The Effect Of A New Teacher Induction Program On New Teachers Reported Teacher Goals For Excellence, Mobility, And Retention Rates, Bonnie Perry, Karen L. Hayes

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

Over the past twenty years there has been a decline in the number of minority teachers entering and remaining in the teaching profession. While the overall teacher shortage is worrisome for educators and administrators, the shortage of minority teachers is one of grave concern. A lack of minority educators inside our buildings is just one consequence of minority teacher shortage. There is also the critical issue of few minority teachers as role models for minority students. Consequently, even fewer minority students are looking at teaching as a potential career (Shure, 2001). The purpose of this study was to analyze teacher …
