Collaborative Research: Research On The Learning And Teaching Of Thermal Physics, John R. Thompson

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

Groups at Iowa State University and the University of Maine will collaborate in a coordinated program of research and research-based curriculum development in thermal physics, targeting both introductory general physics courses and advanced-level undergraduate courses. The research component involves one-on-one student interviews, written pre- and post-test questions, and multiple-choice surveys. This research is then applied to the development of curricular materials intended to improve student understanding in a manner consistent with active-learning methods previously shown be effective in physics instruction. The curriculum will in turn be evaluated for its effectiveness at addressing the student difficulties previously identified through research.

I write to request the Committee's support for the fall 2008 New V/riting Series, an innovative literary arts program sponsored by the English Department and the National Poetry Foundation.

The fall Series is projected to comprise seven events featuring eight writers, including three nationally prominent fiction writers (Lydia Millet, Diane Williams, and Davis Schneiderman), four poets from the United Kingdom (Alan Hasley, Geraldine Monk, Tom Pickard, and Tom Raworth), and the multi-talented African American poet and sound artist Tracie Morris. Capsule biographies of all eight writers are appended to this letter.

Bruno Campo is the conductor, founder, and director of music programs of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and School in Guatemala. What is his connection to the University of Maine? The relationship started two years ago when UMaine Professor of Music Anatole Wieck was invited to the country to help nurture a newly founded youth orchestra. As a Fulbright Senior Specialist, Wieck spent three weeks in the country, establishing such a strong connection that Campo invited him to return to Guatemala during his sabbatical last year.

The repertoire is highly specialized and requires performers with emotional as well as purely musical attachment to the material.

A graduate of Middlebury College and the University of Southern Maine's Stonecoast Writing Program, Jaed's first book has been hailed as a coming-of-age story that transcends the memoir genre.
