An Effective Jig For Friction Stir Welding Of Pipe Butt Joint, Azman Ismail, Mokhtar Awang, Mohd Afendi Rojan

Azman Ismail

A dedicated or specialized friction stir welding (FSW) machine is quite costly especially for pipe joining. Therefore, not many institutions manage to conduct their research on FSW at their facilities. Besides that, the difficulty to design a jig that can hold the complex shape such as pipe section tightly and easily to be removed during and after the FSW process respectively will nullify the intentions. In many institutions, there was either conventional or CNC milling machine available in their workshops. Thus, a jig called orbital clamping unit (OCU) was designed to suit this milling machine. It acts as an additional …

Business Model Design Games: Rules And Procedures To Challenge Assumptions And Elicit Surprises, Sune Gudiksen Jan 2015

Business Model Design Games: Rules And Procedures To Challenge Assumptions And Elicit Surprises, Sune Gudiksen

CW Tsai

Previously well-established companies are currently struggling to secure profits, mainly due to the pressure from new communication technology-based business models. Because of this, the business model research field has flourished in recent years, but most of the applied approaches still rely on linear, rational conceptions and causal reasoning. Through three games and three business cases, it is argued that experimental game-like innovation activities can lead the way into another approach to business model development, called ‘business model design games’. This paper illustrates how the application of game rules and procedures can challenge business assumptions and evoke surprises that lead to …

Trends In Research Collaboration: Experiences In Tanzanian Institutions Of Higher Learning, Baraka M. Ngussa, Mussa S. Muneja

Mussa Muneja

This study investigated trends in research collaborative network among Tanzanian institutions of higher learning. The study focused primarily on online journals based on the fact that they can be easily accessed and stored as compared to print media. It employed a concept analysis design because it didn’t make use of field-based study. It used convenience sampling to get 118 online Journals authored by educators in Tanzanian institutions of higher learning. The findings indicate the majority of sampled articles were authored without collaboration, an aspect that reduces research quality and credibility. It is also worth noting that majority of collaborative authorship …

Women In Mathematics: Change, Inertia, Stratification, Segregation, Cathy Kessel Jan 2015

Women In Mathematics: Change, Inertia, Stratification, Segregation, Cathy Kessel

Cathy Kessel

This chapter examines the participation of women in mathematics, focusing on academe. It begins with an overview of the international situation for graduate education in mathematics, illustrating national differences in proportions of female mathematics doctorates. These differences may be associated with national differences in gender segregation in all fields of study. Data collected within the US illustrate two other statistical phenomena: differences in proportions of women earning degrees and in academic departments, and stratification in professional awards and academic employment. These three phenomena are not unique to the US or to mathematics but the chapter draws many of its illustrations …

Success In These Schools? Visual Counternarratives Of Young Men Of Color And Urban High Schools They Attend, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D. Jan 2015

Success In These Schools? Visual Counternarratives Of Young Men Of Color And Urban High Schools They Attend, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

The overwhelming majority of published scholarship on urban high schools in the United States focuses on problems of inadequacy, instability, underperformance, and violence. Similarly, across all schooling contexts, most of what has been written about young men of color continually reinforces deficit narratives about their educational possibility. Taken together, images of Black and Latino male students in inner-city schools often manufacture dark, hopeless visualizations of imperiled youth and educational environments. Using photographic data from a study of 325 college-bound juniors and seniors attending 40 public New York City high schools, this article counterbalances one-sided mischaracterizations of young men of color …

Matriculating Masculinity: Understanding Undergraduate Men’S Precollege Gender Socialization, Frank Harris Iii, Ed.D., Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D. Jan 2015

Matriculating Masculinity: Understanding Undergraduate Men’S Precollege Gender Socialization, Frank Harris Iii, Ed.D., Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Social scientists, educational researchers, postsecondary educators (including student affairs professionals), and others have attempted to understand problematic behavioral trends and developmental outcomes among undergraduate men. Little attention has been devoted to examining the masculine identities and ideals about manhood that these students bring to college contexts, hence the purpose of this study. The sample comprised 68 undergraduate men representing a range of backgrounds and subgroups. Findings indicate that parental influences, interactions with same-sex peers, and involvement in youth sports were socializing factors informing ideas about masculinity that students brought with them to college. Recommendations for supporting the college transitions and …

Evaluation Of A Trauma-Informed Teaching Intervention On The Educational Well-Being Of Youth In Residential Care, Angelique G. Day

Angelique G Day

In response to the high nationwide prevalence of psychological trauma among court-involved youth who have been exposed to abuse and neglect and the associated far-reaching adverse consequences, there are calls to develop a trauma-informed workforce across the various systems (child welfare, juvenile justice, mental health and education) designed to serve these traumatized young persons. We describe a pilot test of a modified version of the Heart of Teaching and Learning (HTL) curriculum, an intervention designed to increase trauma-informed practices in education settings. Working With Traumatized Students: Measures To Assess School Staff Perceptions, Awareness, And Instructional Responses, Angelique G. Day

Angelique G Day

This preliminary research provides the psychometric properties of three instruments that assess school staff perceptions of student behavior (TPSB), awareness of trauma (TTS), and responses to student behavior (TRSB). Validity and reliability were established for these measures using a sample of 26 school staff members. Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency coefficient for the TPSB resulted in α = 0.83 for both its “acting out” and “shutting down” subscales. The TTS had α = 0.91. TRSB resulted in α = 0.79 for the “acting out” subscale and α = 0.81 for the “shutting down” subscale. These measures may be useful in evaluating …

Is Three A Crowd? Exploring The Development And Satisfaction Of Students In Triples, Larry D. Long, Kyle Kujawa

Larry D. Long

Tripling, the assignment of a third resident to a room designed for two, is a common practice at many colleges and universities across the United States. Most of the research on tripling was conducted three or four decades ago, and research exploring how living in a triple affects the educational gains and satisfaction of college students is limited. The researchers compared the residential experience of residence hall residents who lived in standard double rooms to the experience of residents who lived in triples. The results revealed the residential experience of students in triples was comparable to the experience of students …
