Spicing Mathematics Teaching Through Technology: Case Of Deltamath, Kathryn Zenobio

Education Student Scholarship

Kathryn Zenobio ’22
Major: Mathematics/Secondary Education
Minor: Spanish
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Comfort Ateh, Secondary Education

Prior to the mandatory online teaching imposed by the pandemic, many teachers were familiar with technology but implemented it sparingly. Online teaching presents a great opportunity for teachers to learn and implement technology-based instructional strategies. As a future mathematics educator, I have explored innovative practices with technology that will engage every student in the classroom. In this presentation, I focus on DeltaMath as an instructional tool to enhance teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary classrooms.

A Holistic Approach To Combating Stereotype Threat In Stem Among Elementary Children, Tiffany Berry, Hope Tiboni Apr 2022

A Holistic Approach To Combating Stereotype Threat In Stem Among Elementary Children, Tiffany Berry, Hope Tiboni

Psychology Student Scholarship

Tiffany Berry ’22, Majors: Biology and Psychology

Hope Tiboni, ’22, Majors: Psychology and Health Policy and Management

Faculty Mentor: Dr. Saaid Mendoza, Psychology

Past research has established that concerns about being negatively stereotyped can impact the academic performance of marginalized groups. These stereotype threat effects may be moderated by external factors (i.e., role models, social support) and internal factors (i.e., identity, resilience). We integrate these approaches to promote success within STEM-interested children, particularly young girls. Specifically, we propose a practical toolkit that can be used in elementary schools as a theory-driven holistic intervention for mitigating stereotype threats.

Nothing Left To Give: Responding To Secondhand Trauma In K-12 Educators, Sarah Downey

Education Student Scholarship

Sarah Downey ’24
Major: Spanish/Secondary Education
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Comfort Ateh, Secondary Education

In-service K-12 educators working in urban schools experience higher rates of secondhand trauma that result in teacher burnout and turnover. Existent literature is replete with the prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences and traumatic events in student populations, physiological and educational effects of trauma, and trauma-informed practices in schools. Nevertheless, teachers lack adequate training and resources to engage in trauma-informed teaching. It is critical for teacher preparation programs to engage teacher candidates in acquiring foundational knowledge and skills to be competent in trauma-informed teaching practices. In this poster …

Technology based interventions, such as computer programs and virtual reality, generally yield positive results when used with students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). It is speculated that these devices may be successful because of their novelty and because they do not require the student with ASD to be socially interactive with a person. This project builds on the existing body of research and uses Root robots to …

Streaming Video Resources For Teaching, Learning, And Research, Julie A. Decesare Mar 2014

Streaming Video Resources For Teaching, Learning, And Research, Julie A. Decesare

Julie A DeCesare

In less than 10 years the availability of digitally converted or born digital video, has grown exponentially. Libraries and librarians are constantly navigating, and helping their patrons navigate, this shift from analog to digital. For access to video, our libraries are challenged by an individual consumer marketplace, where institutional access is often limited and expensive. Due to limitations of streaming content, licensing and copyright issues for use in learning management systems and public performance screenings, and time and budgetary issues surrounding the conversion of analog to digital formats, public and educational institutions are still very reliant on physical formats. Patron …

Do School District Bond Guarantee Programs Matter?, Michael Cirrotti Dec 2013

Do School District Bond Guarantee Programs Matter?, Michael Cirrotti

Economics Student Scholarship

The State of Washington enacted a school district bond credit enhancement program in 1999. Oregon did the same in 1998. I use data from the National Center for Education Statistics for a representative sample of states in order to examine whether or not these programs increased the likelihood that school districts in Washington and Oregon issued bonds. I isolate the programs’ impact in Washington and Oregon through difference-in-differences analysis to control for other variation in the data in ten other representative states during the same time period. The results suggest that state-level school district bond guarantee programs increase the likelihood …

Impacting Student Attitudes Toward Mathematics Through Project-Based Learning: A Multiple Intelligence Based Approach, Andrea Wade Apr 2013

Impacting Student Attitudes Toward Mathematics Through Project-Based Learning: A Multiple Intelligence Based Approach, Andrea Wade

Education Student Scholarship

Reflecting on my first year of teaching, the number one hindrance to my students’ progress in mathematics seemed to be that my students strongly disliked the subject. Therefore in my second year of teaching at a diverse Catholic school in New England, I completed an action research project that implemented project-based learning (PBL) based on Multiple Intelligence (MI) theory into my mathematics classroom. I wanted to to see if the experience would first, impact student attitudes to make students like math more, and second, if PBL would allow students to see mathematics as applicable to the real world. Therefore, this …

Teachers’ Thoughts On E-Readers In The Elementary School Classroom, Marcy Zipke

Education Faculty Publications

Despite the popularity of e-readers and the enthusiasm of some for their use in secondary education, their utility in elementary education has not yet been systematically explored. Some advantages and disadvantages to teaching elementary literacy with e-readers are identified here. A convenience sample of ten teachers from a variety of different types of elementary schools and classrooms who were e-reader novices read a chapter of a grade-appropriate book on a Kindle and evaluated its use for their students. The teachers gave their opinions and ideas on how the devices could be implemented. Three specific technological affordances of an e-reader that …
