The action research plan documented in this paper was driven by the researcher's interest in the most effective strategies for optimizing student achievement of new notes on a band instrument. During four cycles, the researcher gathered student achievement of new notes when teacher monitoring and student monitoring. Fifth grade students playing the flute completed both types of monitoring and the results were recorded and compared using a dependent T-test and a bar graph. Every Student Succeeds Act (2015) requires all schools to ensure that all students are receiving a quality education. Multiple measures are used to evaluate the quality of instruction students receive. The Iowa Department of Education assigns a rating to a school based on students’ assessment scores, which measure students’ reading, math, science, and social studies proficiencies. Schools also receive percentages for components of a Conditions of Learning survey. Based on assessment data scores, Blue Grass Elementary score received a commendable rating. Research suggests that a trauma-informed approach helps reduce unwanted behaviors and out-of-school suspensions. This action research project stemmed from the noticeable benefit of movement woven throughout the Wilson Fundations curriculum in developing early phonemic awareness. Research on the education of English Language Learners (ELL) has shown that ELL students underperform native English speakers academically. Right from the start, students’ home language impacts school readiness amongst ELL students. Fortunately, implementing vocabulary and reading interventions is successful in closing learning gaps among ELL students. The implementation of a blended learning approach has been found to increase literary gains among ELL students.
