Promoting Reproductive Health Using Telemedicine: A Prospective Study Among Rural Appalachian High School Teens, Raj Singh, Mohit Harsh, Keegan Mullins, Brian Dunlap, Jennie L. Yoost

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Introduction:

Telemedicine allows rural underserved populations access to medical resources that may not be available in their communities. Following promising results with a telemedicine project aimed at educating female students in McDowell County, West Virginia on reproductive health (RH) in 2015, we conducted a follow-up study including both male and female high school students during the 2016 school year.

Materials and Methods:

Telemedicine sessions on RH were incorporated into existing afterschool programs at two rural high schools. Students’ knowledge on RH was assessed via pre-test, immediate post-test, and 6-month post-test evaluations. RH was taught by medical students and faculty at …

Abms Board Certification: Improving Continuous Specialty Certification, Lois Margaret Nora

Marshall Journal of Medicine

For almost 100 years, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and its 24 Member Boards have been entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the process by which physicians become Board Certified and continue their certification across their careers. Continuing certification provides a framework that helps physicians keep up to date with the myriad of medical advances, to continually improve, and to objectively demonstrate their commitment to maintaining knowledge and skills to the patients, families, and communities who depend upon them. A robust and rigorous certification system is important to the profession, to individual physicians, and to patients and other …

The Mark Of The Millennial: Reshaping Healthcare Education And Delivery, Darshana T. Shah

Marshall Journal of Medicine

An influx of millennials is reshaping the workplace1—including the practice of medicine and the development of physicians in training. The attitudes, influencers, and behaviors of millennials don't align with traditional models of healthcare delivery or healthcare education.

Millennials in academic medicine represent the majority of medical students, residents, and small percentages of junior faculty. In the consumer world, millennial patients are also changing the game for healthcare industries.2 The millennial that grew up with broadband, smartphones, tablets and social media expects instant access to information and now infuses medicine with their attitudes, aspirations, and experiences. They have …

Education Reform In West Virginia And The Effect Of District Takeover, Michael Cunningham, Eugenia Damron, Jessica Hanna

Leadership Studies Faculty Research

The original purpose of this venture was to provide a tool for West Virginia county school board members to perform a mandated annual self-assessment on board effectiveness and to provide appropriate feedback to them. This tool was in the form of a survey instrument that captured both quantitative and qualitative data. A one-way ANOVA analysis, along with descriptive statistics, and an emergent category analysis were performed to interpret the data and provide the needed feedback to the school boards. However, a post-hoc analysis of this state-wide data (55 districts) revealed differences in the data between autonomous districts and those that …

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Abstract

Introduction:

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, agencies responsible for the accreditation of medical and pharmacy schools respectively, require interprofessional education (IPE) to be integrated into both curricula. Institutions are given the autonomy to design and implement this requirement, however research is equivocal in regards to when and how best to implement IPE. The development of a new IPE curriculum is often met with a number of challenges, such as a lack of faculty support and resources.

Methods:

This study describes a newly created pilot IPE curriculum developed with minimal existing organizational …

The Role Of Evidence-Based Research In The Decision-Making Process As Perceived By Local Board Of Education Policymakers In West Virginia, Elizabeth Anne Hoylman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This non-experimental, descriptive study explored the perceptions of PK-12 policymakers in West Virginia regarding the sources of information they use in the decision-making process; whether and how evidence-based research is relied upon; whether evidence-based research is considered credible and usable; and what barriers, facilitators, and demographic data may play roles in the decision-making process. Data were collected from a 15-question researcher-created survey administered to nearly 200 county board of education members. Results indicated that while policymakers think evidence-based research is important, they nonetheless use it less than other types of information. Consumers consider research reports too lengthy. Respondents indicated they …

Effectiveness Of Essentials For College Math As A High School Transitional Course, Jennifer S. Riggleman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Statistics on the number of students who leave high school underprepared for postsecondary education, and have to take remedial coursework upon entrance to college vary, but, unfortunately, for at least the last 10 years, these statistics have remained high. This study examined the effectiveness of one transitional high school math curriculum called Essentials for College Math and its impact on 887 students in the state of North Carolina for the 2014-2015 academic year. The results of the study showed that there was a statistically significant improvement seen in pre- and post-test scores of students that completed the course. There was …

"God, Mother And Island Creek": The Story Of Holden Central School And The Emergence Of Nurturing Paternalism, Harley D. Walden

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The story of the community of Holden, West Virginia (Logan County), Island Creek Coal Company, and its model school (Holden Central School) offers a counternarrative to the dominant deficit-oriented narratives concerning Appalachian education. In particular, the progressive nature of Island Creek Coal Company led it to create a model coal camp community and a school that educated their employees’ children. The school operated from 1922 until 1970, when the combined elementary and junior high school closed its doors forever. Island Creek Coal Company both designed, supplied, and oversaw the daily operations of a benevolent community with all the modern amenities …

Edward Lee and Lulu McClain gave the gift of a new high school to the rural Appalachian community of Greenfield, Ohio, in 1915. Inspired in part by John Dewey’s Progressive theories of education, the school became the center of the community, both literally and figuratively, providing the best, most modern education for its students. The school was particularly unique in its focus on the arts, with its spaces carefully crafted and developed; its halls and classrooms filled with over 200 pieces of classic and original art, including murals, sculpture, and other works; and its curriculum inspired by art-based ideas of …

Douglass High School (DHS), named for the abolitionist Frederick Douglass, was a segregated high school built in 1924 located in Huntington, West Virginia. For thirty-seven years the three-story brick building served as a major academic, social, and cultural resource for African American families in Huntington. Many students considered the school to be the heart of the black community, even given the challenges of segregated schools of the era. This study traces the historical development of Douglass as a segregated African American junior/senior high school in Cabell County, West Virginia. The research focuses on the experience of DHS alumni to gain …
