Students in an air traffic control program are required to learn and apply advance knowledge and skills in a limited time frame. All students learn at different rates as well as through different learning styles. Many companies train employees on writing emails in seminar-style training sessions. However, in-person, seminar-style trainings are costly. This study aims to create a training program, rooted in the science of training to address these needs. We examine the mechanisms of action by which the training influences performance and intent to transfer. To do this, we call upon several models of training effectiveness (see Alliger, Tannenbaum, Bennett, & Traver, 1997; Baldwin & Ford, 1988; and Kirkpatrick, 1959). A NSF funded Student Training in Airborne Research and Technology (START) two-week deployment of the University of Wyoming King Air (UWKA) research aircraft was conducted at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Prescott, Arizona during late March and early April 2014. Some of the goals of this program were to build knowledge on airborne atmospheric research for undergraduate students across multiple departments and to collect a valuable set of aircraft data for atmospheric model validation. In this conceptual study, the authors explore the development of checklists for fixed-wing aviation operations, including their utility in accomplishing identified goals and adherence to human factors design principles. Furthermore, the authors review the current status of the aviation industry transition to electronic checklists, comparing them to their paper counterparts, and assess adherence to human factors principles in electronic checklist design and implementation. In some instances a double standard exists: in academia students and educators alike are severely censured if there is the slightest indication of plagiarism. But in other areas of society, the use of compensated ghostwriters is the accepted norm.
