Implementation Of Skill-Based, Transdisciplinary Competencies And Their Influence On Teacher Practice, Thomas P. Wolfe

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Competency-based education has been a growing movement in K-12 education but faces several implementation challenges. In addition, discussion in the field is lacking related to the competency-based principle: learning outcomes emphasize the authentic application of knowledge. New to the competency-based field are proficiencies called competencies, which are skill-based, transdisciplinary proficiencies that are structured across a continuum of varying performance levels. This study employed a case study methodology utilizing teacher and educational leader interviews as well as artifacts to explore the implementation of competencies in a competency-based organization and two schools that partnered with it. This study specifically investigated how competencies …

"Everything Is Political Now": Teaching Politics In The Age Of Trump, John G. Lund

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Many American high school government and history teachers aim to convey curriculum content without bringing in their own personal political beliefs or biases. However, in the hyperpolarized political climate of the past decade, teachers have grappled with teaching their courses when potentially controversial political or cultural issues come up in class conversations or lessons. Their teaching decisions and the classroom environment can have an impact on students’ learning, mental health, and their own views on American politics, history, and culture. This qualitative, narrative inquiry study examined ten high school teachers’ practice of teaching politics in the age of Trump. Findings …

Othermothering By African American Women In Higher Education At Predominantly White Institutions: How The Practice Affects Their Professional And Personal Lives, Julie Collins

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Many African American women who work in higher education, in non-faculty roles, incorporate a historical and cultural tradition commonly referred to as “othermothering” with higher education best practices when working with African American students. The practice of othermothering was used by enslaved African American women to assist other mothers with the care of their children and to maintain the family structure. The practice continues to this day in spaces where women are present such as neighborhoods, faith communities, community organizations and educational institutions. This research, using Black Feminist Theory as the theoretical framework, sought to study othermothering as practiced by …

A Comparative Analysis Of Best Practices In A Facial Recognition Policy For Law Enforcement Agencies, Terry H. Smith

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) and the plethora of applications that have adopted this technology have exploded in the last decade. Most people have probably heard about local law enforcement agencies utilizing FRT to catch criminals, locate missing persons, and provide large-scale event security. Law enforcement's use of FRT has been criticized since its implementation. Critics have lambasted FRT, citing inaccuracy of the technology; potential race, age, and gender bias; the collection and retention of images; and a lack of governing standards as to when the technology can be applied. In addition, the lack of transparency has been met with fierce …

As dual credit courses have become more and more popular, both in the country as a whole, and in the state of Illinois, many students are taking advantage of the benefits that these courses can provide. The problem that this study focused on was whether or not the state of Illinois is doing all it can to ensure all students are able to benefit. The High School Longitudinal Study (2009) was a national study that provided valuable information on the academic environment in high schools at that time. One of the areas the study looked at was dual credit programs. …

The Role Of International Service Learning And Student Outcomes, Kristen One

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

In a society where school has become an institution of routine, international service learning provides an engaging method to impact and transform students through experience, reciprocity, and reflection. While the new pedagogy shows promise, there are also challenges when putting international service learning into practice. Current literature informs readers on the need for more intentional research to understand how students process their international experience and the role it plays in student transformation. Using a case study method of research, my study focused on the international service learning experience of four relatively privileged secondary education students who traveled to a remote …

An increasing number of children in early childhood education (ECE) are Latinx. Drawing on ethnic identity, culture, and language, this thesis describes the dichotomy between adherences to one’s ethnic identity and assimilation into the dominant societal culture. This paper describes how assimilation harms students and provokes negative implications such as identity loss, confusion, and loss of cultural ties. Dismantling the dichotomy is possible through the power of language, culture, and strengthening teacher-parent relationships.

Applying The Social Model Of Disability: A Phenomenology Of Initiating Change In Higher Education, Olena M. Marshall

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

In the past decades, disability service professionals in higher education began adopting the social model of disability as a theoretical and practical framework for creating more inclusive campus environments for students with disabilities who attend colleges and universities in growing numbers. Specifically, in the early 2000s, an international organization of disability service professionals, the Association on Higher Education and Disability, took on a strategic effort to shift the paradigm of disability services toward systematically removing barriers to full participation and transforming disabling environments—away from the prevalent modes of service focusing on the medical model, legal and regulatory compliance, and ad …

Locked Out To Be Locked Up, Only To Be Locked Out, Again: A Critical Analysis Of Exclusionary Disciplinary Practices, And An Illinois Policy's Attempt To Eradicate The School-To-Prison Pipeline Phenomenon, Algeanna Louise Griffin

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

African-American students have experienced the injustices of institutional racism, which has been reflected in the exclusionary discipline practices implemented within the educational system. These practices, including the excessive use of suspensions and expulsions, have victimized African American youth at higher levels than their White peers. This overrepresentation of discipline in the educational system has mirrored the U.S. penal system's practices, creating the phenomenon known as the school-to-prison pipeline. To eradicate these practices, Illinois legislator Kimberly Lightford, in collaboration with VOYCE (Voices of Youth in Chicago Education), created Senate Bill 100, which is now Public Act 99-0456. This policy is designed …

The onset of symptoms may be subtle, exaggerated, or undetectable without an examination. The complex nature of the unique enterprise of policing exposes officers to mental health hazards continuously over decades. In an effort to explore the predictors and attempt to establish a basis for preventative actions an examination …

The current precarious relationship between law enforcement and some marginalized minority communities throughout the United States is quite alarming. The Los Angeles riots of 1992, the Baltimore riots of 2015, and the nationwide riots of 2020 serve as a few relatively recent reminders regarding the potentially explosive relationship between marginalized minority communities and the police. Several social and economic factors contribute to the unrest in some marginalized minority communities, such as unemployment and poorly funded educational systems in many areas in the United States. However, in this study, an emphasis was placed on what measures law enforcement agencies can take …

Naming And Re(Claiming) Feminism In Orthodoxy: Voicing The Gender And Religious Identities Of Greek Orthodox Women, Anne Marie Adams

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a qualitative study of the effects of Greek Orthodoxy on the gender and religious identity meaning-making of five Greek-American women. The emergent themes from this study indicate that participants’ gender and religious identities were heavily influenced by the dueling tensions and contradictions between patriarchy and feminism, conservative traditionalism and modernity, and secular life and the religious community (i.e., family and church). Underpinning this study are Narrative Identity Theory and Feminist Standpoint Theory. Portraiture methodology was employed across three semi-structured interviews, as well as three written/video reflection journals to reveal how women, as articulated through their own perspectives, …

Tracking And Experiences Of Black Students Following The Inception Of No Child Left Behind, Gwenda Walters Apr 2021

Tracking And Experiences Of Black Students Following The Inception Of No Child Left Behind, Gwenda Walters

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Academic placement in high school classes is an important decision that can have long-term effects on student success. Research indicates that students most often remain in high or low tracks year after year. However, the precision of placements relative to real achievement disparities in the grouping of students into homogenous groups remains a petulant area of debate. Many scholars consider placement judgments to be dubious, marginal, or incorrect in terms of performance gaps, notwithstanding the assumption that these placements are deemed accurate in representing a student's academic ability. Researchers argue that the process of comparing, sorting, and classifying students has …

It’S Really About Relationships: Perceptions Of Teacher Autonomy And It’S Influence On Instruction, Nancy Harmening

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

There is growing concern over why so many U.S. teachers are leaving the profession before retirement. Researchers studying this phenomenon theorize how future attrition rates will be determined by working conditions that either foster or squelch teachers’ sense of professional autonomy. What is unclear from the literature is an understanding of specific intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting this autonomy development during a critical period in teachers’ careers, years 5-15. This study highlights the specific factors that influence the professional autonomies of nine early childhood elementary public-school teachers’ and how their sense of their professional autonomies interact to affect their instructional …

Dancing In The Liminal Tension: A Phenomenological Study Of How Queer Black Boys Manifest Happiness In An Urban Midwest High School, Kendrick D. Johnson

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Urban public schools, as social institutions, have historically played an integral role in reproducing the oppressive ideologies of society writ large. As we depart an era of cautious optimism, many LGBTQ students are teetering on the brink of hopelessness and despair. So often many of these students’ voices—particularly those of queer Black boys—are still silenced. Ergo, there is a sense of urgency on the part of educators, researchers, and policy-makers to understand how and why queer Black boys consistently disrupt the hegemonic terrain of schools by transforming them into liminal spaces; it is in these sacred spaces-in-between that new identity …
