African American Urban Public High School Graduates’ Experiences Concerning Mathematics, Lorenzo A. Rashid
African American Urban Public High School Graduates’ Experiences Concerning Mathematics, Lorenzo A. Rashid
ETD Archive
This interpretive qualitative study explored African American urban public high school graduates’ experiences concerning mathematics, how these experiences may play a role in the choice to further their mathematics education, and how the Model of Academic Choice (MAC) may facilitate in the understanding of the experiences.
It examined the lived experiences of seven African American urban public high school graduates concerning their mathematics education. Through criterion-based sampling, the seven participants selected had graduated from a public high school located in Northeast Ohio school districts having similar characteristics.
Data were collected through semi-structured interviews that explored participants’ kindergarten through post-secondary mathematics …
Measuring Urban High School Student Outcomes In A Protein Design Course, James Gillahan
Measuring Urban High School Student Outcomes In A Protein Design Course, James Gillahan
Undergraduate Research Posters 2016
STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) focused high schools have previously shown promising outcomes in the urban districts, where low income students have lower graduation rates, college acceptance and less access to advanced fields of study as compared to students of wealthier school districts. Modeling a protein design course from a private school, we aim to develop curriculum for a biotechnology course for an urban high school. Biotech is an emerging multidisciplinary field that could have similar outcomes to STEM education. We also aim to measure outcomes including student perspective of resulting STEM and career choice, using ethnographic methods.

"Say It In Polish!": The Role Of Heritage Language In Preserving Culture Among Families Of Eastern European Origin, Beth Friedman-Romell, Taylor Darfus, Wancheng Tsai
Undergraduate Research Posters 2016
This project is part of a larger qualitative research study exploring the relationship between Eastern European American parenting styles and children's academic achievement. Seven mothers who were either first- or second-generation Eastern European American participated in semi-structured individual interviews. This project focuses on heritage language preservation. It revealed motivations, strategies, and outcomes of parents' desire to transmit their heritage language to the next generation. All participants had at least one child between ages five and eighteen. Based on our findings, four themes have emerged: 1) Motivations for heritage language preservation; 2) Resources and strategies to foster heritage language learning; 3) …

A Spiral Computer Engineering Lab Framework, Pong P. Chu, Chansu Yu, Karla Hamlen-Mansour
A Spiral Computer Engineering Lab Framework, Pong P. Chu, Chansu Yu, Karla Hamlen-Mansour
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This development establishes a “spiral” lab framework, in which the key concepts are revisited at increasing levels of sophistication and interconnection, for Computer Engineering curriculum. The development is addressing a serious deficiency – lack of integration skill – in engineering curriculum. The framework connects and integrates the individual courses through a coherent sequence of lab experiments and projects across the entire curriculum. These lab experiments and projects are designed to illustrate and reinforce key theoretical concepts and their complexities and abstraction levels gradually grow as students progress through the curriculum. The framework is based in three cohesive themes: video, audio, …
