Open Access At A Crossroads: Library Publishing And Bibliodiversity, Lai Ma, Jane Buggle, Marie O'Neill

The open access movement has gained momentum since the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) first launched twenty years ago. Notably, there has been a drastic increase in the number of open access articles. Concerns have been raised about equality and diversity issues, however, for researchers without an affiliation (e.g. independent, unemployed and retired researchers) and researchers on the ‘scientific periphery’ who are excluded from the gold open access model. This study explores the strategic implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in Higher Education Colleges Association (HECA) colleges through an exploratory lens. UDL, rooted in the Centre for Applied Special Technology's (CAST) framework, aims to provide inclusive and challenging learning opportunities for all students. The research investigates the positioning, integration, and impact of UDL within HECA colleges, emphasizing the shift from piecemeal enhancement to a strategic priority. The findings, derived from qualitative data obtained through focus groups, underscore the role of Quality Assurance processes, governance structures, program design, technology, and educational initiatives in advancing UDL. This case study explores initiatives undertaken during the academic year 2020/21 to further advance the implementation of the CCT Research Strategy entitled 'Implementing a Research Strategy at CCT College, 2019-24'. Specific initiatives explored in the case study include the expansion of scholarly content on CCT's institutional repository ARC; the establishment of a CCT Research Lunch and Learn series for faculty, and activities undertaken to promote student engagement with the inaugural HECA Student Research Awards.

Case Study: Implementing A Virtual Induction Programme For Students, Cct College Dublin

Prior to the pivot to emergency online teaching and learning, CCT staff and students gave the digital environment at CCT (hardware, software and digital teaching and learning) a high rating of 88.6% and 79.6% respectively in the Irish National Digital Experience INDEx survey. This robust digital environment provided a strong basis to underpin the migration of traditionally face-to-face student support services to an online environment. This was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic but will be continued both as a supplement to face-to-face induction, and as a permanent feature for recently validated blended programmes. The CCT Student Mentoring Academy is a key institutional student success and student partnership initiative. In the Academy, students work in partnership with faculty to provide peer support opportunities across the college as well as structured support and guidance for peer mentors. The College’s Student Success Strategy 2021-23 states: “CCT will continue to grow and expand its CCT Student Mentoring Academy through faculty supervised peer support. Since its foundation in 2005, CCT College Dublin has had a strong focus on digital innovation to enhance the teaching and learning experience. In February of 2019, prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning's Irish National Digital Experience INDEx Survey indicated that 78.3% of students positively rated digital teaching and learning approaches at CCT (31.9% excellent and 3.4% best imaginable). In February 2020, CCT College Dublin convened the Monitoring and Review Team (MRT), to identify risk and mitigating actions required to ensure the continuity of programme delivery and supports to learners during the COVID-19 Pandemic in the event of potential campus closure. The team investigated good practice in online teaching, learning and assessment, regulatory frameworks and practices, technology supports, and human resources required to proactively support any potential shift to online delivery and supports. The Higher Education Colleges Association, through its Academic Quality Enhancement Forum, recently conducted an exploratory study demonstrating that since the pandemic, universal design for learning (UDL) has shifted from an ad hoc enhancement activity to a key strategic imperative across HECA colleges.
