Effects Of Transition From Closed-Book To Open-Book Assessment On Students’ Scores In A Pharmacokinetics Course, Reza Mehvar, Richard Beuttler

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Closed-book summative assessment of student learning, common in pharmacy education, is challenging to administer in a remote setting due to the need for costly and intrusive monitoring technology. Therefore, open-book assessments without monitoring have been considered an alternative in remote settings. The present study investigated the effects of the transition from in-person closed-book to remote open-book format on the students’ scores in different assessment categories in a Pharmacokinetics course. The students’ performances in the transition cohort (Transition, n = 96) during the in-person and remote periods were compared with those of an in-person cohort (Control, n = 85) during the …

Exploring The Experiences Of Underrepresented Students Pursuing Health-Related Graduate Or Professional Programs, Alison Williams Aug 2023

Exploring The Experiences Of Underrepresented Students Pursuing Health-Related Graduate Or Professional Programs, Alison Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For many years graduate and professional education programs for the health professions have sought to increase the diversity of their student body to include students from a wider variety of backgrounds. Increasing the diversity of healthcare providers is an essential component of addressing inequities in healthcare. However, despite initiatives to increase racial and ethnic diversity in the health professions, these professions remain largely White and female. Previous researchers have sought to identify the reasons that racial and ethnic minorities are underrepresented in healthcare, and the barriers to persistence and success. Little research exists explaining why men are underrepresented in the …

Adherence Versus Compliance, Tasaduq H. Mir Apr 2023

Adherence Versus Compliance, Tasaduq H. Mir

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Adherence and compliance are 2 words that are used interchangeably by medical professionals. When we come across a patient who is not taking their medication as advised, we say the patient is non-compliant when the truth is that the patient is non-adherent. Although the terms are used as if they mean the same thing, the 2 words are different in so many ways. In order to understand the difference, it is important to understand the true meaning of these words. According to the literature, “adherence is an active choice of patients to follow through with the prescribed treatment while taking …

Interprofessional Education: Models That Promote Shared Clinical Decision-Making, James D. Nash Apr 2023

Interprofessional Education: Models That Promote Shared Clinical Decision-Making, James D. Nash

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Interprofessional education continues to be emphasized as an area that needs to continue to grow by agencies that accredit higher education professional degree programs. Teams of healthcare professionals need to learn more about each other, collaborate, and understand what matters most to the patient when care is needed in an acute or ambulatory care setting. Settings that promote clinical shared decision-making and collaboration with pharmacists among the team and increase communication between members and the patient will decrease medical errors, increase patient safety, and improve the quality of life for the patient.

Pharmacy Faculty Books and Book Chapters

The rapid transition to distance learning in response to the unexpected SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic led to disruption of clinical skills development, which are typically conducted face-to-face. Consequently, faculty adapted their courses, using a multitude of active learning modalities, to meet student learning objectives in the didactic and experiential settings. Strategies and considerations to implement innovative delivery methods and address potential challenges are elucidated. Furthermore, integration of a layered learning approach may allow for more broad perspectives and allow additional interactions and feedback, which is especially necessary in the virtual environment.
