“Fire Away”: I Have No Right To Not Be Insulted, David Barnhizer

In theory, universities are the institutions that are responsible for advancing our freedom of thought and discourse through the work of independent scholars and the teaching of each generation of students. But for several decades, universities and other educational institutions have increasingly set up rules aimed at protecting individuals and groups from criticism that those newly empowered individuals and groups consider insensitive, offensive, harassing, intolerant and disrespectful, or critical of their core belief systems. Even though it has been claimed that disadvantaged interest groups have a right to use one-sided tactics of intolerance against those they consider to be responsible …

Reading levels can be assessed through lexile measures, which determine and calculate growth through goals set by Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). IEPs are based on specific Content Standard Objectives (CSOs) of each student set by national and state mandates. Objectives listed in each student’s IEP can be met through specialized instruction with the use of specific strategies in an effort to increase student learning. Achieve 3000 is a technology-based reading comprehension program that focuses on specific needs of students in order to provide reading material at each student’s reading level. Students have the opportunity to read the same material as …

Teacher Attitudes Of The Effectiveness Of Reading Comprehension Strategies And Interventions, Charles Hartley
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study surveyed the attitudes of secondary teachers in a semi-rural school district in West Virginia in an attempt to gain an understanding of how teachers in the district perceived the comprehension skills of their students and the effectiveness of reading comprehension strategies and interventions currently being employed by the district and by individual teachers. The researcher developed a survey that was distributed to all the secondary schools in the district. The survey consisted of Likert Scale questions and opened ended responses. The results of the survey indicated that the participants believe that overall the comprehension skills of students in …

Heartside Gleaning Initiative (HGI) is a non-profit organization who seeks to empower Heartside, Michigan and surrounding communities to become healthier by increasing their access to healthy foods and nutrition education (Web, HGI Mission and History). HGI combats the effects of food related illness and aims to restore healthy food security into the neighborhood through the collection and distribution of fresh produce to low-income families and individuals. All produce distributed has been donated by various local farmers in the West Michigan area.
Finding a consistent, reliable source of helping hands during the gleaning season is paramount to the success of HGI. …

As food insecurity is becoming a factor among many college students, campus food pantries are opening across the country. ReStore is a food pantry at Grand Valley State University, created in April 2009 to help students who are not able to afford food or are unable to get to the local supermarket. The number of these students is alarming. Statistics show 25 percent of students, at the University of California at San Diego, skip meals due to not having money to buy food. ReStore is an asset to GVSU where it helps reduce food insecurity on campus. Campus food pantries …

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is an organization whose mission is to improve the lives of those affected by diabetes. This is done by funding research, raising awareness in the community, educating the public on the disease, and making resources available to those affected by diabetes. Being students of Grand Valley State University, we had the opportunity to collaborate with the West Michigan ADA to improve the lives of those with diabetes on the GVSU’s Allendale campus. To do this, we created a convenient way for those with diabetes to keep track of their carbohydrate intake by creating a guide …

Personal accounts addressing real-life experiences are a testament to humanity, and allow future generations to act and improve upon them. Currently, large cities are facing malnutrition and are often labeled “food deserts” (Walker et al., 2012). While restaurants and convenient stores are bountiful in large cities, the variety of food they offer is not. Access of West Michigan is an organization providing workshops, simulations, and programs to educate the general public on the importance of health and nutrition. In the present paper, we address the challenge to further educate and inspire community members to get involved and allow Access to …

LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability
Team Education Energy formed at Grand Valley State University’s Traverse City campus in the winter of 2015 through a course called “Wicked Problems in Sustainability” (LIB 322). For their project Team Education Energy reached out to Traverse City West Middle School with the idea to create an energy fair. The mission of the project was to help promote ideas of environmental stewardship and to engage and utilize student’s creativity in contributing to the solution of energy efficiency and energy use. The middle school students formed teams and used these concepts to determine what energy efficiency improvements could be made within …

LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability
Through a Grand Valley State University course on “Wicked Problems in Sustainability”, our team was formed focusing on energy efficiency. Inefficient energy within our homes is one of the biggest culprits in unsustainable energy use; “The amount of energy wasted by 75,000 average American homes in a single year is equal to the waste that occurred in the 2010 BP Oil Spill” (erc-co.org). Looking at more energy efficient ways of living, we explored Earthships. “The Earthship is the epitome of sustainable design and construction. No part of sustainable living has been ignored in this ingenious building” (earthship.com). As a design …

LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability
Today in the United States, a significant portion of energy use is devoted to transportation needs. To address sustainable energy use in transportation, Team Wicked Awesome formed in the class LIB 322: “Wicked Problems in Sustainability” at Grand Valley State University in the winter of 2015. Looking to wicked problem solving methods, we examined Traverse City’s need for alternative options for transportation (other than single occupant vehicles). As an alternative mode of transportation, we looked into a number of ways to promote bicycle ridership and came to discover there was a tentative plan to complete a portion of the Traverse …

Father Convict Cichlids Bite Intruders More Often In Hot Temperatures, Jesse L. Heckendorf
STAR Program Research Presentations
Convict cichlids (Archocentrus nigrofasciatus) have evolved to be extremely good parents by protecting their brood. Parental care leads to aggressive biting, chasing, and gill flaring to intimidate predators. In this experiment, we show that environmental factors, such as the changing of temperature in this case, affect a male convict cichlid’s aggression toward caring for his offspring when an intruder is introduced. Male convict cichlids attack more in warmer water.

Retrospective Study Of Trauma Programming And, Domonique La'toya Rice
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In state psychiatric hospitals in the United States, many patients are admitted with a history of trauma. Although trauma-focused interventions are offered within these psychiatric facilities, there remain issues with the higher-than-average length of treatment and rehospitalization rates for patients with a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder or for those who are suffering with a history of trauma. This study investigated between group differences for measured levels of attendance and type of group intervention (which included the men's trauma recovery empowerment model, dialectical behavior therapy, and art and healing) on the risk for violence as measured by scores on the …
Social Studies Teachers' Use Of Twitter And #Edchats For Collaboration, Eric Langhorst
Social Studies Teachers' Use Of Twitter And #Edchats For Collaboration, Eric Langhorst
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Past studies have indicated that teachers in the United States have limited opportunities to collaborate with peers; this limitation has been found to be particularly problematic for social studies teachers. An increasing number of educators are using the social media application Twitter to collaborate. Little research exists concerning social studies teachers' use of #edchats, a weekly recurring Twitter session. The focus of this qualitative case study was the collaboration that exists among social studies teachers participating in Twitter edchats. The theoretical framework was communities of practice. Transcripts of 10 edchat sessions in 2013 were coded with an a priori strategy, …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of singing-integrated reading instruction on the oral reading fluency and motivation of elementary students in an after school program. Participants were third graders (n = 29) who attended the singing-integrated oral reading fluency (SI ORF) intervention twice a week for eight weeks. Components of the intervention included teacher-modeling of fluent oral reading, oral support, repeated reading and singing activities from a variety of children’s literature, and individual free-time.
The adapted Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (ERAS; McKenna & Kear, 1990) measured recreational, academic, and composite reading attitudes. The Qualitative Reading …
