Over the years, linguistic anthropological research has shown how classrooms are socializing institutions and how language functions as one medium through which this socialization is accomplished. Early work in the field has captured the immediacy of social practice and language use in educational contexts, and has created useful characterizations of variations in communicative competence. The present work builds on the strengths of prior work, showing how new theoretical concepts and empirical methods developed in linguistic anthropology over the last decade can further illuminate educational settings. The authors introduce an updated Linguistic Anthropology of Education which recognizes that, in the rapidly changing …

Hemingway's "The Killers", Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe
Charlie Sweet
In his seminal study Hemingway and the Dead Gods, John Killinger relates Papa's fictional world to existententialism, concluding that Hemingway sees that individuality is not a quality which can be superimposed externally on a man, but that it must be internally achieved by a decision to be at all times an authentic person and to accept the full responsibility of action proper to a primary agent. In his philosophy, as in that of Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Sartre, the opportunity for such a decision is presented as a moment of crisis, which, for him, is produced by confronting death or violence.

Given that IDP forecasts that the global demand for international higher education in Australia will grow to almost 1 million places by the year 2025, meeting the demand for international education represents a critical challenge for Australian institutions. There is concern as to whether Australia's higher education system has the capacity to meet demand while continuing to maintain a high quality educational experience Based on the outcomes of detailed interviews with institutions across all sectors, this report examines the supply and capacity issues that will determine Australia's ability to meet future demand. The chapters of the report consider: capacity, quality …

Students enter schools with different levels of reading literacy and this study concentrated on the school's influence on students' subsequent development in reading literacy. The question is whether teacher and school characteristics, by themselves, have a systematic influence on the development of students' reading literacy. It has been and continues to be a goal of schools, in tandem with social policies, to compensate for student disadvantage arising form the out-of-school environment. Schools should not therefore aim to offer uniform educational opportunities to students without regard to differences in students' background and learning profiles. This article demonstrates it is classes where …

Looking At Others And Ourselves : What Australian Mathematics Teachers Can Learn From The Timss 1999 Video Study., Hilary Hollingsworth
Dr Hilary Hollingsworth
As a tool for studying and improving teaching, video offers tremendous learning opportunities. Videotaped lessons enable teachers to efficiently and effectively 'visit' classrooms not only in their own school, district or country, but also in other countries. Through observing and analysing videotaped lessons teachers can learn about real teaching alternatives as they are actually practised. As part of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 1999 Video Study, over 600 mathematics lessons from seven different countries were videotaped and analysed. This paper focuses on what Australian mathematics teachers can learn from the study, and in particular what can be …

Numeracy Up Front : Behind The International Life Skills Survey, Dave Tout
David (Dave) Tout
This paper presents some of the results of the Numeracy Working Group in the International Life Skills Survey (ILSS) and the what the author suggests is a wealth of ideas and concepts that can be of interest to the wider educational sector. The author looks at why numeracy was included in the ILSS and the numeracy framework that was established. Complexity factors, assessment items, results so far and issues, problems and benefits showing up in the survey are discussed.

Being A Teacher: Developing Teacher Identity And Enhancing Practice Through Metacognitive And Reflective Learning Processes, Anne Graham, Renata Phelps
Being A Teacher: Developing Teacher Identity And Enhancing Practice Through Metacognitive And Reflective Learning Processes, Anne Graham, Renata Phelps
Dr Renata Phelps
The discourse of reflection is now firmly embedded in a range of teacher education programs in Australia and overseas. Reflective frameworks have been used by teacher educators to offset the perennial emphasis on technically prescriptive interpretations of ‘being a teacher’. Whilst these undoubtedly contribute to the personal ‘meaning making’ of neophyte teachers, particularly in relation to practical classroom experiences, there remains significant scope to integrate a more concerted reflective approach throughout other elements of the teacher education endeavour. When the language of reflection is applied only in a cursory or superficial way in the teacher education context the opportunity to …
