Founded in the late 1880’s, this college originally served students exclusively from the surrounding Appalachian region. Faculty to student ratios average 18:1 and the number of students served average 1000-1200. Today, although the college serves a more diverse student body geographically, it still endeavors to retain the culture of personal attention and support from faculty and staff. These attributes make the college attractive to students from rural communities who often are first generation college students. Adjunct faculty are a growing and significant portion of teaching faculty at Universities across the United States. They are, however, vastly different from the traditional faculty member in terms of their needs, challenges, goals, and professional development options within their respective role and department. The proposed session would discuss the results of an adjunct faculty needs assessment conducted at UNC Charlotte. Additionally, it would present the steps that have since been taken to better serve adjuncts at this institution in terms of clarity, communication, networking, and professional development. Program introduces and discusses the process and implementation of an online 360-Degree evaluation for counseling interns. This evaluation process employs feedback from the counseling intern’s immediate work circle: for example, the supervisor; clients; staff; and referral sources. In addition, the counseling intern evaluates their own services. Learning outcomes include, but not limited to knowledge of how to construct a 360-Degree evaluation; how to interpret the data; how to present outcomes to the counseling intern; and the pros/cons of such an evaluation. Program introduces a special discussion on how to turn qualitative information into testable quantitative data.

I share about my experience converting a traditional computer lab in the library to an active learning space. During summer 2012, the Seattle Pacific University Library staff proposed, planned, and implemented the conversion of a traditional lab space with 22 desktop computers into an active learning classroom. We equipped the room with mobile furniture, a wireless interactive, short-throw projector with digital pens, a new MacBook Pro checkout system, and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls. Partnering with librarians, Facilities, and Instructional Technology Services, the project came together just before the new academic school year.
