Information Workers In The Academy: The Case Of Librarians And Archivists At The University Of Western Ontario, Melanie Mills
Information Workers In The Academy: The Case Of Librarians And Archivists At The University Of Western Ontario, Melanie Mills
Melanie Mills
For much of its history, the organizational culture for academic librarians and archivists at The University of Western Ontario was primarily a culture of the practitioner. While librarians and archivists supported teaching, research and service at Western, they did not directly engage in it. As a result of grassroots efforts undertaken by members of Western’s academic community in the mid-2000s however, the potential contributions of information workers to the teaching, research and service mandate of University began to garner recognition. Born out of this collective awakening, a successful union drive and shortly thereafter an inaugural Collective Agreement for The University …

It Works For Me, Creatively, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe
Charlie Sweet
The authors’ purpose in this seventh book in the “It Works for Me” series is to demonstrate that “everyone possesses creative talent, though it may be latent in some and difficult to bring out in others. It’s not just a talent possessed by artists and engineers, mind you, but everyone.” Furthermore, “Creative people have figured out consciously or un- that a small seed of creativity can be made to grow by having the proper environment and a minimal set of skills. And people can be taught or self-taught this process.” The authors/editors also believe that “all creative ideas link themselves …

It Works For Me: Becoing A Publishing Scholar/Researcher, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

The authors’ purpose in this book is to provide “a collection of practical tips drawn from real-life experiences.” We believe this particular book is so important to share with today’s audience, we almost called it Take My Book, Please! On the other hand, does the scholarly world need another book on the importance of scholarship? Further, if the book standard for tenure is slowly disappearing because so many academic presses are closing, why would we bother to write one? And recent studies show that new faculty members consider university employment a 9:00-5:00 job, so doesn’t that leave out time for …

From Bereavement To Assessment" The Transformation Of A Regional Comprehensive University, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe, Rose Perrine, Paula Kopacz, Dorie Combs, Onda Bennett, Stacey Street, E.J. Keeley
Charlie Sweet
This is no conventional book about assessment. It presents the unvarnished first-person accounts of fourteen faculty and administrators about how they grappled, and engaged, with assessment and how – despite misgivings and an often-contentious process – they were able to gain the collaboration of their peers as the benefits for student learning became evident. This is a book for skeptical faculty, for those who have been tasked to spearhead their institution’s call to create a culture of assessment; and, on campuses where assessment has been widely accepted and implemented, for those who now need to ensure this commitment will endure. …
Triple Play, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe, William Phillips
Triple Play, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe, William Phillips
Charlie Sweet
“Triple Play” presents three procedural techniques nicely reduced to related mnemonics for making the most of class time by embedding three different approaches to assessing students’ learning right there in the class that day. The fruits of such exercises doubtless will give faculty who try them important information on what’s working with their students and what is not, but a point the authors don’t emphasize is that the exercises will also compel students to become conscious of where they stand in their own learning as learning rather than as a response to how they felt about the class that day.
The Spectre Of Class: Educating And Advising For Self-Efficacy, Mikaila Arthur
The Spectre Of Class: Educating And Advising For Self-Efficacy, Mikaila Arthur
Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur
In her essay “The Spectre of Class: Educating and Advising for Self-Efficacy” Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur discusses the importance of building student self-efficacy. However, as Arthur points out, creating an environment where students believe in their capabilities to learn and perform at a particular level is deeply influenced by one’s class background. As Arthur states, “These students have grown up in a culture that values individualism and places responsibility for success and blame for failure squarely on the shoulders of each person.” Arthur speaks more generally about creating self-efficacy and offers insight in how to maneuver around and transcend the …

The Writing Community: A New Model For The Creative Writing Classroom, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe
Charlie Sweet
After creating a taxonomy of classroom approaches to the teaching of creative writing, the authors discuss a current practice they have employed, the writing community. The authors detail its success, place it within current pedagogical research into small-group and team-based learning, and suggest possible applications to allied fields.

In the 19th century Kentucky was at the crossroads of western migration and expansion. We believe this collection will demonstrate, along with earlier anthologies, that the Commonwealth is once again becoming the epicenter of literary output. Too often the media paint a picture of America as a bi-coastal country with little in between. One message from New Growth is that there are other, important voices that will be heard. Check out this collection and see if you don't agree

Decomposing Consumer Wealth Effects: Evidence On The Role Of Real Estate Assets Following The Wealth Cycle Of 1990-2002, Michael Donihue, Andriy Avramenko
Michael R Donihue
During the period from 1990 to 2002, U.S. households experienced a dramatic wealth cycle, induced by a 369 percent appreciation in the value of real per capita liquid stock-market assets, followed by a 55 percent decline. However, despite predictions at the time by some analysts relying on life-cycle models of consumption, consumer spending in real terms continued to rise throughout this period. Using data that include the period from 1990 to 2005, traditional approaches to estimating macroeconomic wealth effects on consumption confront two puzzles: (i) econometric evidence of a stable cointegrating relationship among consumption, income, and wealth is weak at …
To "Keep The Past In Lively Memory": William Carl Bolivar's Efforts To Preserve African American Cultural Heritage, William Welburn
To "Keep The Past In Lively Memory": William Carl Bolivar's Efforts To Preserve African American Cultural Heritage, William Welburn
William C Welburn
The contributions of William Carl Bolivar, a Philadelphia African American bibliophile and journalist, are considered. Bolivar’s interest in historical documentation shaped his sense of interconnectedness with the collective memory of Philadelphia’s black community. His collecting interests are manifested in his column published in the Philadelphia Tribune, in his contributions to the American Negro Historical Society and other social and cultural organizations in Philadelphia, and in a published catalog of portions of his collection. Bolivar’s network of collectors and associates formed a “nucleus for a larger effort” to preserve African American cultural heritage. Their collecting efforts formed the foundation for black …

Iowa State University is a very special place, full of history. But what truly makes it unique is a rare combination of campus beauty, the opportunity to be a part of the land-grant experiment, and to create a progressive and inventive spirit that we call the Cyclone experience. The Fifties in America surveys the events and people of all of North America during the 1950's. This three-volume publication, Salem Press's second reference set on a twentieth century decade, is modeled on the award-winning The Sixties in America (1999). The 1950's are often portrayed as an uneventful era in North American history - a period of political and cultural conservatism. The decade was in fact a period of political turbulence, mounting world conflict, and cultural change. The 1950's experienced the Cold War, McCarthyism and a trend toward the suppression of civil liberties.

Total Team Teaching — Sharing Teaching Duties Equally, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

In his excellent book on team teaching (Interdisciplinary Courses and Team Teaching), James Davis posits two extremes on the continuum of team teaching. One pole consists of “courses planned by a group of faculty and then carried out in serial segments by the individual members of the group” (p. 7). At the opposite pole are “courses planned and delivered by a group … . They take primary responsibility for individual class sessions, but sometimes [italics ours] two or more faculty are involved in planning and delivering the instruction of a particular class.” (p. 7) The two of us take the …
