The Right View. Sensitivity U, Michael L. Lane Feb 1996

The Right View. Sensitivity U, Michael L. Lane

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Last week's announcement of a new dormitory wing reserved for gays, lesbians, and bisexuals is not particularly interesting. It came as no surprise that the university, concerned more with sensitivity than education, would forge ahead with such a reckless plan. Many would prefer to ignore the issue. However, as a supposed voice of the reactionary social policy, I feel that this decision, indeed the university's stance of anti-discriminatory education, is worthy of comment.

Cutler Defends No Hiv Testing Policy, Mark Jackson Feb 1996

Cutler Defends No Hiv Testing Policy, Mark Jackson

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

The editorial of Feb. 2, 1996 on HIV testing needs a response. There is an evolving understanding of the role of HIV testing as part of a broader effort to effect major behavioral changes that are needed to halt the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The community should understand these facts about HIV testing.

Maine Indian Rights The Worst In The Country, Eric R. Manni

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Does Michael L. Lane thoroughly research a subject before he use[s] his pen? Responding to "All bets are off" (Maine Campus Feb. 16), Lane has addressed four separate issues in one commentary. This is typical over-generalized […] when it comes to addressing Native American issues.

Black Women In Antebellum America: Active Agents In The Fight For Freedom, Sandra M. Grayson Jan 1996

Black Women In Antebellum America: Active Agents In The Fight For Freedom, Sandra M. Grayson

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

The most prominent images of Black women in antebellum America depicted in classes across the United States are of passive victims as opposed to active agents of change. Further, most history books overlook Black women's roles in antebellum America — oversights which can be considered suppression through historical omission. In order to reflect a more accurate picture of American history, public and private school curriculums need to include texts by and …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In 1954, Marshall College followed the national law that banned segregation in the school systems of the United States. The law included the integration of athletic programs. While only a small part of the process, athletic programs often presented integration on a more visible stage than the integration of classrooms.
