Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

A resolution that would have granted $200 to the Wilde-Stein Club was defeated by the Student Senate Tuesday night after nearly an hour of emotional debate. The resolution, defeated by a vote of 28-10-3, was introduced in the Senate last week after the group was granted $150. The original request for $400 made by the Wilde-Stein Club was reduced at a Finance Committee meeting to $150.

Elected Cowardice: Blaming The Constituents, The Maine Campus

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Oh, boy. Here we go again. First we learn that UMO Student Senate has suddenly decided they can't give the Wilde-Stein Club $300 to help finance for their scheduled gay conference. Next, we find out that the Republican House members, during a party caucus, decided they can't consider giving the University of Maine any more money until the Board of Trustees reneges on their decision to let the gays hold the statewide conference at UMO.

Privilege Vs. Priority, The Maine Campus Jan 1974

Privilege Vs. Priority, The Maine Campus

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

The new library circulation policy announced by Dr. James MacCampbell is deficient in one area--it does not apply to the faculty. Students who have been at UMO for any length of time know very well that this is nothing extraordinary. Faculty members have long been held above the student as a privileged class. Their extensive library privileges are just one facet of the caste system fostered by university policy.

Making The Grade: Motivating Factor Or Outmoded Barrier To Academic Achievement?, Jeffrey W. Beebe, Rhette Wieland

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Education is fast approaching the stage where students are crossing a line between a desire to succeed and the fear of failure. Although UMO tends to shrug off the pressure of grades, many students them of great concern. They gulp their meals and rush to the dorms to study, they toss in bed, losing sleep before tests--if they go to bed at all--and many sweat out every test and grading period as if waiting for the Judgetment. The fear of failure is well hidden in most cases, but there it is.

We Are Americans, Not Ethics, Tom Piker Nov 1973

We Are Americans, Not Ethics, Tom Piker

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

The more I read headlines such as "University Termed Insensitive to Franco-Americans" the more disgusted I get. Such gross and all-encompassing statements lead me to feel pity--pity for those who write articles, make unfounded charges, and generalize and discredit our University. To the aforementioned I ask, "What do you want?"

It's The Issue That Counts — It's The Language That Counts, Phil Mace

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Editorial reaction to language included in the feature story, "Gay Lib. Spokeswoman" which appears in the 1973-04-12 issue of The Maine Campus. There are over 400,000 words in the English language. It is ridiculous to segregate seven, eight, or nine—or even one—of them as totally unsuitable for use in a newspaper. Acting as if certain four-letter words do not exist only adds to the titillating air that surrounds them when they do appear—as they will.

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

On January 17, 1972 an ad hoc committee was appointed to evaluate the special educational needs of women within the University of Maine at Orono/Bangor and in the larger community served by this University. This committee was chaired by Dr. Constance Carlson.

PROBLEM : The intellectual, social and professional climate of the University does not encourage women students (undergraduate, graduate, CED, and special) to realize their full intellectual, social and professional potential.

SOLUTION: The University environment must become a vital catalyst encouraging each woman student to make the most of the educational opportunity and cultural freedom available at Orono/Bangor thereby …

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

With the changing picture of dormitory life, the image of housemothers has also changes. Stewart felt women would improve the atmosphere in the dorms.

Gay liberation has finally come out of the closet in Maine, and it looks like it is out and open to stay. A gay group began last semester at UMO as part of the Abenaki curriculum. Intended as an academic discussion of the social and psychological aspects of homosexuality, the small grou expanded and turned from a discussion to become an active gay social-support group.

In the wake of Equal Rights Amendment battle in Maine, and after perusing the most recent copy of Ms. Magazine I could find, I figured I ought to get into more hot water by saying a few words about the feminist campaign in America.

Correspondence From A Umaine Alumnus, Name Redacted, Howard R. Neville

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Handwritten, one-and-a half-page letter from a UMaine alumnus located in Michigan denouncing the University's position regarding the Wilde-Stein Club and "gay symposium." Transcription: March 24, 1973 Gentlemen, For many years I contributed to the Alumni Fund but I find it impossible to do anymore. Although I have not lived in the state since graduation, I have been kept informed. What I have heard, I do not agree with. The policy changes at the U of M, during recent years, are not ones that I in any way can support. The Homosexual Convention was the last straw. You can cross me …
