Ouachita Theatre Arts To Present "Billy Blythe" Modern Folk Opera Nov. 17-20, Katie Smith, Ouachita News Bureau

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will present “Billy Blythe,” a modern folk opera featuring music written by Bonnie Montgomery and libretto by Britt Barber, both Ouachita alumni. The opera will be performed Nov. 17-19 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 20 at 2:30 p.m. All performances will be held in Jones Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10 each, and admission is open to the public. Tickets can be purchased at www.obu.edu/boxoffice.

The Ouachita Baptist University Department of Theatre Arts will present the fall play The Learned Ladies on Nov. 3-5 and 7-8 at 7:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6.

The French comedy, written by Molière, is a satire on academic pretention, female education and precociousness. Written in the late 17^th century, The Learned Ladies originally was written in French and later translated into English. The OBU production will feature a translation by Richard Wilbur. Sweet Time Suite by Kenny Wheeler (1930-2014) is a landmark long form Jazz composition. A work of 40 minutes in length, Sweet Time Suite is rarely performed live. The 1990 album on which this piece appears, "Music for Large and Small Ensembles" is considered one of the most innovative and influential jazz albums of the last 30 years.

Dr. Shaw is an acknowledged expert on the work of Kenny Wheeler. He is currently working on an authorized autobiography.

The International Dance Festival (IDF) is one of the popular annual events and showcase that adds global diversity to our UMaine campus community. This event provides both domestic and international students with an opportunity to teach, learn and share with one another through the art of dance. The International Dance Festival will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the Collins Center for the Arts at 2 pm and 7 pm. This event will be the 13th year in 2017.

The Ouachita Baptist University and Henderson State University theatre programs are partnering to produce and perform To Kill a Mockingbird. The play is adapted by Christopher Sergel from the classic novel by Harper Lee. This project involves investigating the value of dance within a student’s life. The research has included a variety of facets of dance - how it is related to brain/neuroscience research and motor skills; how it is fun and an opportunity to learn in a different way; and how it enhances academics, mental stability, and social interactions. Ouachita Baptist University’s Department of Theatre Arts will host its student-directed One-Act Play Festival on Thursday and Friday, May 5-6, at in Verser Theatre. Thursday’s performances will begin at 8 p.m., and Friday’s performances will begin at 7 p.m. The festival is free and open to the public.

The One-Acts are a project for students enrolled in a directing course who are working to complete a theatre degree. Ten one-act plays will be performed over the two-day festival.

The promise of cognitive innovation as a collaborative project in the sciences, arts and humanities is that we can approach creativity as a bootstrapping cognitive process in which the energies that shape the poem are necessarily indistinguishable from those that shape the poet. For the purposes of this conference the exploration of the idea of cognitive innovation concerns an understanding of creativity that is not exclusively concerned with conscious human thought and action but also as intrinsic to our cognitive development. This research project comes in the form of a professional development project combining the theories of critical literacy for elementary students and drama as a form of arts integration in literacy instruction. The project consists of six workshop sessions intended for willing elementary school teachers looking to expand their thinking around literacy instruction. Participants experience introductions to drama as an instructional approach by learning three specific strategies, including tableau, character interviews, and writing-in-role. They also learn about the basic elements of critical literacy by engaging in self-exploration and reflection, along with participating in research-based learning exercises intended to extend individuals' …
