This video offers a look at the Bank Street Center on Culture, Race & Equity’s partnership with District of Columbia Public Schools to address educational disparities for African American boys. The center’s work focused on helping school staff examine their own implicit biases, stereotypes, and microaggressions and learn to shift from deficit- to strengths-based attitudes to support system level change.

New Haven Children’s Learning District (NH ChILD) envisions a city where all children have access to high quality early learning experiences. In order to turn this vision into reality for the 14,800 children ages 0-8 living in New Haven, NH ChILD is working to increase the number of spaces in high quality programs while simultaneously improving the quality of early learning experiences in existing programs. The following paper outlines NH ChILD’s beliefs, commitments, and plan for action with respect to NH ChILD’s citywide efforts for in-service professional learning.

Dora Rivas has dedicated more than thirty-five years of service to child nutrition and related programs. A Texas native, she grew up in the small town of Los Fresnos and attended collage at Texas A & I University (now Texas A & M) where she received a degree in nutrition and dietetics. She first entered the field of school nutrition in 1977 as a school dietitian and eventually promoted to Assistant School Director and then School Director in Brownsville, Texas. In 2005, she moved to Dallas, Texas to work as the Executive Director in the Dallas Independent School District until …

The Coalition Against Restraint and Seclusion (C.A.R.S.) is a group of stakeholders whose mission is to prevent the overuse of restraint and seclusion within the educational setting. As part of Jodie Hall’s training with the New Hampshire-Maine LEND Program, she worked with C.A.R.S. to update their resources and parent education materials. This poster presentation reports on the outcome of her work and the development of a series of short informational videos which may be accessed via the internet.

Rodney Taylor is the Director of Food and Nutrition Services for Fairfax County, Virginia, Public Schools. He was formerly Director of Nutrition Services for the Riverside Unified School District in Riverside, California. He holds a B.S. degree in Public Administration from California State University. A noted pioneer and expert in farm-to-school salad bars, Rodney is known for establishing the “Farmers Market Salad Bar” program in 1997 while working as Director of Food and Nutrition Services in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. In order to plan and implement lessons that will be effective for a wide variety of learners, teachers must assess what students know and how they know it. They must also know students’ academic strengths, challenges, and preferences. Careful observation of what students do and say as they work provides a rich source of data about both their knowledge and ways of learning. We highlight three strategies we use to help teachers refine their understanding of individual students:
(a) building teachers’ skills in observing without making judgements; (b) teaching teachers to use a shared, neurodevelopmental framework through which to view …

The most critical element in the first year of the Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFE) has been the completion of a gap analysis regarding campus support of faculty development. What has Missouri S&T done well and where has the campus fallen short? What should CAFE do to enhance the performance of faculty?
This report, a response to those questions, is based largely upon 80 interviews. Describes the Bank Street Education Center's District-wide Instructional Initiative Framework, a tool that guides the Center's partnership work with school districts who are engaged in a process of instructional improvement. The Framework was developed out of research on district improvement, organizational development, school leadership, and professional learning, as well as the Center's own experience implementing large-scale district reform in the largest school district in the nation: New York City.

Seniors Teach Others Real Intergenerational Experiences (S.T.O.R.I.E.)
Teacher Education Majors at the University of Northern Iowa are matched with senior adults residing at Western Home Communities. During their ten one-hour meetings, the students and residents are guided in their discussions by the book Gratitude: Affirming One Another through Stories (2013) written by UNI Emeritus Faculty, Dr. Len Froyen. Through conversations and stories, the seniors of both generations are enhancing their understanding, compassion and acceptance of each other. S.T.O.R.I.E. Time gives the seniors a chance to choose a story together that will be written for the book.

Following The Money: Exploring Residency Funding Through The Lens Of Economics, Karen Demoss, Prepared To Teach, Bank Street College

Following the Money digs into how the system for funding teacher preparation fuels a host of shortcomings: subpar routes to teaching, inadequate practice before entering the classroom, shortages in high need areas, underprepared teachers. Following the Money finds that financial barriers limit our ability to grow to a universally high-quality teacher preparation system, calling for a stronger knowledge base about the economics of teacher preparation to understand how we can realize the quality we need.

It introduces viewers to compelling early childhood classroom footage accompanied by facilitated discussions about observations and teaching practices.
