Globalisation, Good Governance And Democracy: The Interface, Dare Arowolo, Folorunso Aluko
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Globalisation has been an important factor in accelerating democracy’s growth in recent decades. In this globalised world, rapid development and global proliferation of new technologies and telecommunications, and integration of the world economy through trade and investment, have increased the role and power of regional and global institutions (Cheema and Maguire, 2004). This promoted and strengthened the spread of democracy while also providing the leverage for good governance. Globalisation impacts on the mode of governance that a country operates either as a symbol of universality or for uniformity. This unstoppable trend has homogenised governance on a global scale while depicting …

Consider the employee who is highly engaged and self-directed in her work, manages ambiguity well, genuinely engages in the journey of becoming an agent of change, seeks ways to understand herself as a leader, and relishes the possibilities of ideas. On the other hand, there is the employee who looks to others for direction and answers, finds the lack of clarity and ambiguity unbearable, resists new ideas, has difficulty making decisions, or jumps right into the decision-making process without careful reflection. These disparate behaviors in employees seem to occur unrelated to age, gender, and socioeconomic level. As teachers, managers, and …

Influence Of Universal Basic Education (Ube) Facilities On Classroom Control And Discipline And Teaching-Learning Atmosphere In Ogun State Public Primary School., Lasun Gbadamosi, Muyiwa Adeyemi
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Studies over the years have shown that classroom control and discipline and learning atmosphere of schools can be occasioned by the nature and level of facilities provided and that these equally have its influence on academic performance (Ajayi,1998; Adamu, 1998 cited in Dike, 2002; www.nigeriafirst.org, 2004 & Adeyemi, 2007).

For more than twenty-five years reform efforts have been pervasively pursued across the nation to improve student achievement at the K-12 level. It is generally agreed that the impetus for these reform efforts was the publication of the report, A Nation at Risk, in 1983(National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983). This report, which concluded that a “rising tide of mediocrity” was sweeping across the educational system served as the clarion call that spurned the national efforts to reform and improve America’s schools. Although these reform efforts have covered nearly every aspect of schooling and taken a variety of forms, …
Language And Care: Tensions For Japanese Teachers And Foreign Students In Japanese Schools, Mito Takeuchi, Francis Godwyll
Language And Care: Tensions For Japanese Teachers And Foreign Students In Japanese Schools, Mito Takeuchi, Francis Godwyll
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Current Japanese schools have maintained the homogeneous discourse, based on the majority, ethnic Japanese, embedded in the national curriculum. In addition to the homogeneous discourse, Tsuneyoshi (2003) argues that Japanese schools have an educational philosophy of egalitarianism, asserting that “all children are treated the same.” Egalitarianism in schools refers to working to provide the same materials for all students, teaching all at the same pace, and, frequently not offering additional support for particular students (Gordon, 2006). In other words, students need to share a high level of commonalities, such as a common language, a shared belief system and behavioral norms, …
Kolb’S Experiential Learning As A Critical Frame For Reflective Practice, Elizabeth Turesky, Diane Wood
Kolb’S Experiential Learning As A Critical Frame For Reflective Practice, Elizabeth Turesky, Diane Wood
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
David Kolb’s conception of experiential learning has informed wide-ranging studies and practices in education, business, organizational development, and leadership studies for over two decades now. His work has guided the work of trainers, teachers, and scholars, affording significant insights into both individual and organizational learning. Because deep and sustained change in human settings requires that people learn, Kolb’s penetrating analysis of the complexities involved in human learning has provided clues about the notorious difficulties surrounding change in both individuals and organizations. In an era where the newest ideas tend to have special cache, Kolb’s work has had remarkable staying power. …

Leadership To Run The World: A Mandate For Higher Education, Gregory Eastwood
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
“Leadership is an essentially moral act,” said A. Bartlett Giamatti, former president of Yale University, who later became Commissioner of Baseball. But consider these few news items, selected from a multitude of candidates: Eliot Spitzer, former governor of New York, resigned after his involvement with a prostitute was made public. Rod Blagojevich, former governor of Illinois, was removed from office by unanimous vote of the Illinois State Senate after conviction on federal corruption charges. Bernard Madoff, former Wall Street executive and NASDAQ chair, currently is incarcerated in federal prison after conviction for investment fraud. Rev. Jeffrey Sarkies, a popular pastor …

Since the early 1980s, the concept of quality has been a central focus of attention in the debate of higher education (HE). Over time, many developed countries have experienced a growing concern for quality in HE such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Norway, and the United States of America, amongst others (Anyamele 2004, Becket and Brookes 2005). The focus on quality leads many developed countries to acknowledge the benefits of the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) within their institutions (Kanji and Tambi, 1999). However, quality movement is rather slow in the HE of developing countries. Indeed, some HEIs have …
Outcomes Assessment, Michele Langbein
Outcomes Assessment, Michele Langbein
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Outcomes assessment is an intense topic that has been debated and discussed on university campuses around the world. Educational accountability is a very important topic. There is tremendous pressure from accreditation agencies to comply with outcomes assessment requirements to maintain accreditation. In addition, to be competitive in a market of many choices, students, employers, and legislators are seeking trustworthy programs. This has raised many questions for Provosts, Deans, and Department Chairs. What are the purposes of outcomes assessment? What should we assess? What methods should we use? How do we overcome faculty objections? Do we need to hire additional administrators …

Parent involvement is one of the key components of the NCLB Act. Under NCLB, every school district is mandated to develop processes to ensure meaningful ways to engage parents. The requirements for parental involvement rest on the premise that parents acting as informed advocates to hold schools and school district accountable. The value placed on family involvement at the federal, district, and local school levels reflects decades of research showing the connection between family involvement and positive student outcomes. Studies on family involvement have concluded that students’ home environment and family involvement are important predictors of a variety of academic …

This paper highlights some of the most notable cash incentive programs, questions why the flow of money into these programs is not totally transparent and well known to the taxpayers who fund some of them, and reviews literature on the psychological, motivational, and ethical issues surrounding this policy. We would like to question how much public funding is being spent, especially since towns and school systems are struggling in these difficult financial times with miniscule operating budgets.

Preparing Our Students For The 21st Century, Jeff Livingston
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
When America’s first universities were founded in the 1600s, gaining a degree in higher education was an intellectual right of passage saved only for the most wealthy and privileged. Those few who could attend were destined to become the social, political and business leaders of society. A college education was meant to prepare them for that role. In today’s global knowledge economy and hyper-connected world, many can have an impact on society through contributions across a variety of industries – not just a select few. Higher education today is meant to prepare the masses as they consider a much wider …

The review of the literature clearly shows that the exploration of a critical question is missing from the analysis of internships: Do interns who experience higher levels of involvement develop higher levels of knowledge and skills? In this study, learning experiences are defined as the type of involvement (i.e., low-involvement or high-involvement). The purpose of this study is to examine if higher levels of intern involvement result in the acquisition of higher levels of perceived knowledge and skills. Survey research method was used to assess the principle interns’ level of involvement in a set of specified activities and to assess …

Resident Block-Rotation In Clinical Teaching Improves Student Learning, Ralitsa Akins, Gilbert Handal
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
In 2007, a new block-rotation in clinical teaching was implemented for the third-year residents in the pediatric residency program at Texas Tech HSC in El Paso, Texas. We describe the design and implementation of this rotation, as well as its impact on student learning and satisfaction. During 2.5 academic years, the teaching residents supported the experiences in the pediatric clerkship of 129 medical students. Evaluations of teaching residents and clinical teaching rotation, as well as written feedback indicate improved student learning and satisfaction. Our clinical teaching rotation presents a structured approach to “teaching residents to teach” with an ample time …

Rti In A Middle School Culture: Fitting And Tailoring The Approach Through Leadership, Elizabeth Alderton-Manzi, Jean Erdmann
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Educational rhetoric often focuses on assessment, scores, and performance components which can be treated as being discrete. Response to Intervention (RTI) however, provides an opportunity for schools to look at sound, research based educational practices that support student learning through the use of tiered interventions. The tiers are interrelated and action driven. Assessment is one tool within the tiered approach to learning. One of the most important aspects of RTI is that it is meant to be a collaborative, school wide approach to education that brings together teachers, specialists, special education experts, and administration in an effort to help improve …
Strategic Planning And The Principal-Agent Issue In Higher Education Leadership, Douglas Auld
Strategic Planning And The Principal-Agent Issue In Higher Education Leadership, Douglas Auld
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Strategic planning is well entrenched in colleges and universities around the globe. It is not only essential for effective resource allocation but in some jurisdictions, legislation requires that strategic plans be submitted to government as part of the funding approval process. The difficulties associated with strategic planning and indeed planning in general in colleges and universities has not gone unexplored. It is our contention and the thesis of this paper that the failure to develop and execute strategic plans flows from the distinctive aspects of the principal-agent framework within which many higher education institutions work. Understanding and responding to the …

Six experienced teachers in the regular classroom, who happen to have one, or more students that was identified by the school as having gifted characteristics or students that teachers felt should have been identified as a gifted student, develop their way of helping students overcome personal challenges. It is our hope that a research documented approach will catch the eye of other teachers and motivate them to do the same. Each teacher documented research as it relates to his/her student(s). In the absence of a school identification process, other researched identification processes served as benchmark for teacher support. Following are …

Teaching Reading Comprehension To Children Of Poverty, Kena Price
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
In 2007 18% of children in the United States were living in poverty, and 12.5% of the entire population lived in poverty, which amounts to 37.3 million people (US Census Bureau Poverty 2007). To be considered actually living in poverty, not just poor, a single person home had to report an annual income of $10,590 or less, while a home with four people residing in it needed to report $21,203 annual salary (US Census Bureau Poverty Thresholds). These statistics demonstrate the overwhelming need for teachers to know how to best teach students coming from poverty. Almost 20% of our students …

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Democracy is said to be consolidated when all parties and individuals operate freely in a competitive and transparent environment; where stakeholders are guided by the rule of law, fair play and respect for group and individual rights. In political systems that approximate the ideal of democracy, the vote and election are meaningful. Elections place some individuals in power and reject the claims of others. Elections most typically are retrospective judgments on the conduct of the person and party that has held power. Those who have given satisfaction are confirmed in the office, those who are held responsible for the poor …
The Benefit Of Extracurricular Activities In High School: Involvement Enhances Academic Achievement And The Way Forward, Scott Turner
The Benefit Of Extracurricular Activities In High School: Involvement Enhances Academic Achievement And The Way Forward, Scott Turner
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Research and data have been cited for over four decades about extra-curricular activities both sports and non sports related. Non sports related reference such activities as government, publication, journalism, math, and non specific leadership. Although there appears to be much data individually supporting each as a whole limited studies seem to be available. Depending on the region many schools urge and push sports as extra-curricular but do not necessarily promote sports for the benefit of the student, unfortunately more-so for the benefit of the school. Just as there were skeptics more than three generations ago today some still exist, stating …

The Ethics Of Educational Leadership, Denver J. Fowler
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
“No issue has captured the interest and imagination of the American public more than the subject of ethics, particularly in relation to leadership in the public sector” (Rebore, 2000, p.v). One of the most universal questions in educational leadership is “What is the relationship of ethics as it relates to educational leadership?” The answer can be very complex. Many authors who have written on the subject of ethics in educational leadership have tried to answer this question. All major branches of ethics must be considered when attempting to answer this question. These branches include metaethics, normative ethics, applied ethics, moral …

The School Improvement Fund (Section 1003(g) of Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act) recognizes that schools with high percentages of students in poverty may require additional support in order to help their students achieve academic proficiency. As such, the 1003(g) School Improvement Fund has since 2007 provided competitive funding opportunities to Title I schools considered to be in improvement status under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). The Fund has provided vital financial support necessary to make critical improvements in the teaching and learning environment of grantee schools, including enhancing professional development for teachers, …

The main aim of the missionary education was to reach Christianity and thus convert all those who came within the four walls of the mission house. The British colonial Missions set up norms of religious education that progressively colonized the converts. Religious education primarily meant carrying out civic duties which enabled Nigerians to adopt the Western culture at the expense of their own. Prior to the coming of Western religions and education, Nigerians were very religious and also functional in their education. They acknowledged the presence of God in whatever they did. Their religion therefore cut across their entire lives …

The transformation of societies to capitalism has introduced complexity into activities of man. Once capitalism transformed the traditional way of life, factors such as effectiveness of competition, freedom of movement and the absence of any system of social security compelled the state to assume responsibility for the protection and welfare of the individual (Jacoby, 1973:147). To help the state achieve this, it has become imperative to have a seeming standing power evolving from, but placing itself above, the society. Such power that alienates itself more and more from the society is being exercised on behalf of the state by certain …

It should first be stated that there are many bright students in the Korean educational system and Korea has produced great waves in the information technology fields and the Korean economy has leaped in bounds from the days of poverty and despair, following the Korean War, to the present days when Korea has proven itself to be a world class country with a world class economy. Nevertheless, the Korean system of education has seemingly lagged behind the advances the Korean information technology and semiconductor industries have enjoyed.
