Digging Trenches: Nationalism And The First National Report On The Elementary History Curriculum, Chara H. Bohan

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

The objective of this historical analysis is to determine the origins of the American elementary history/social studies curriculum and to determine how nationalism affected the curriculum as it progressed in the early twentieth century. The Committee of Eight (Co8), established by the American Historical Association in 1905, created the first national report on the teaching of elementary history and civics. Factors influencing the resultant curriculum, such as the pressure for diverse membership, the curriculum established in European countries, the growth and development of American identity and pride, the massive expansion of public schooling, and regulations on teacher certification are examined. …

Mathematics As “Gate-Keeper” (?): Three Theoretical Perspectives That Aim Toward Empowering All Children With A Key To The Gate, David W. Stinson

Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Faculty Publications

In this article, the author’s intent is to begin a conversation centered on the question: How might mathematics educators ensure that gatekeeping mathematics becomes an inclusive instrument for empowerment rather than an exclusive instrument for stratification? In the first part of the discussion, the author provides a historical perspective of the concept of “gatekeeper” in mathematics education. After substantiating mathematics as a gatekeeper, the author proceeds to provide a definition of empowering mathematics within a Freirian frame, and describes three theoretical perspectives of mathematics education that aim toward empowering all children with a key to the gate: the situated perspective, …

Early Vanguards Of Progressive Education: The Committee Of Ten, The Committee Of Seven, And Social Education, Chara H. Bohan

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

By the early 20th century, a new citizenship education curriculum had emerged that endorsed a significantly broadened definition of citizenship. Early vanguards of transformation in the social education curriculum were evidenced in the 1890s in the reports of the Committee of Ten and the Committee of Seven, commissioned by the National Education Association and the American Historical Association, respectively. The hallmarks of early Progressive Era educational change were the development of new social science methods of research and investigation, expanded social studies course sequences, innovative experiential teaching methods, social studies curricula designed for younger children, and ultimately the development of …

Transforming The Supervision Of Hong Kong’S English Language Teachers, Gertrude Tinker Sachs, Julia Cheung, Dorothy Pang, Mary Wong

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

Uni-directional top-down traditional, approaches to the supervision of teachers limit the engagement of the teachers in reflecting upon their own practice and professional growth. Acheson & Gall (1992) recommend a three-phase approach to teacher supervision which includes […] classroom observation and feedback conference. Such […] emphasizes a more dynamic and constructivist approach to empower teachers to transform their practice and identify directions […] professional development. What happens when this and other approaches are adapted and applied by teachers in different contexts? This as well as other issues and concerns related to the supervision of language teachers in Hong Kong are …

Islands Of Hope: A History Of American Indians And Higher Education, Chara H. Bohan Jan 1996

Islands Of Hope: A History Of American Indians And Higher Education, Chara H. Bohan

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

To understand the recent growth of American Indian controlled higher education, which began in earnest with the founding of Navajo Community College in 1968, it is necessary to comprehend the context in which American Indian higher education developed. Accordingly, the history of traditional Indian education in the pre and post colonial era and the U.S. government's influence upon Indian education will be examined. Ultimately, the twenty-four tribally controlled colleges, the two federally controlled colleges and the four independent colleges primarily serving American Indians will be analyzed. The continued development of these colleges is critical to the future of Indian education.

Levels Of Cultural Familiarity And Strategy Use In Reading Comprehension, Gertrude Tinker Sachs Jan 1989

Levels Of Cultural Familiarity And Strategy Use In Reading Comprehension, Gertrude Tinker Sachs

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

Previous studies have used cross-cultural comparisons to demonstrate the effect of background knowledge on reading comprehension. The present study used a similar approach to study the relations between background knowledge, reading skill and level of use of reading comprehension strategies. Eighty-eight sixth-grade participants in elementary school were equally divided according to reading skill (skilled and less skilled) and country (Bahamas or Canada). Subjects thought aloud while reading culturally familiar and unfamiliar informative texts. Protocols were scored according to the level of strategic action exhibited and according to the condition triggering the action.

The results, while confirming the role of knowledge …
