The educational gap in student achievement is steadily broadening among the various disaggregated groups throughout our nation’s public schools. School administrators, teachers, politicians, and other stakeholders are scampering about trying to find a solution to this ever-growing problem. Unfortunately, they are looking for the answer in all the wrong places. In fact, the answer to this crisis in America’s public school system lies in a series of questions. School administrators and teachers need only to address the following in order to effectively provide students with a quality education: What do race and ethnicity have to do with students’ ability to …

The continuing professional development (CPD) of teachers has, since the 1980s, become an important subject in teacher education reform in the world (Ding, 2001). Increasingly, it is being realized that teaching is a specialized work and that teachers as developing professionals should reach their maturity both in the context and level of their profession through lifelong learning and exploring.

The school’s main core business is teaching and learning. A quality curriculum and effective instruction are key elements to ensure successful teaching and learning in schools (Grigsby et. al. 2010). Thus, various activities and resources established in the schools should be optimized to ensure that teaching and learning are implemented effectively. From the human resource perspective, the main drivers of successful teaching and learning are teachers. Hence, quality teachers who can perform their responsibilities with commitment are prerequisites for successful and excellent education.

Bhagat & McQuaid (1982) advanced that “undoubtedly, the most significant cross-cultural study of work-related values is the one carried out by Hofstede”. There has been interests on the influence of culture be it national or corporate on organisations and with growing national diversity in today’s businesses, culture remains an important dimension. Hofstede’s landmark study of IBM (Hofstede 1980 has highlighted some essential facts about culture that impact on organisational performance. Preceding Hofstede’s study was the work of Bartels (1967) who was one of the first to relate the importance of culture, illustrating the concept in decision-making and business ethics.

In the 1980s, the system of relatively uniform centralised budget resource allocation to schools was judged by many to have impaired the achievement of equality, efficiency, liberty and choice. Thus, school-based management was suggested, with lump sum budgets allocated to schools, together with a high degree of community involvement in school decision making and the fostering of diversity within schools to ensure choice (Caldwell and Spinks, 1988). School-based management (SBM) was intended to encourage positive participation from teacher, principal and parent representatives on the school board committee (Yadollah, 2006; Cheung and Kan, 2009). This attracted groups of people with different …

Today’s frontier is knowledge. Brain has taken precedence over brawn; our physical struggle for existence has been replaced by intellectual struggle, and knowledge of words has become the most valuable tool for this struggle. Words are the very cornerstone of any language. With a good vocabulary, which indicates scope of knowledge, we can grasp the thoughts of others and be able to communicate our own thoughts to them. As Stahl (1999) argued, discussion of words is discussion of knowledge of the world, and knowledge of the world is knowledge of who we are and where we stand in the world. …

Becoming an effective and well rounded leader in academia often requires proficiency in the three critical components of an academic career: scholarship, service, and teaching. However, the emerging focus on faculty scholarship as the most salient of these elements, particularly as evidenced through publication in academic journals for graduate faculties, has been well documented in research (Green, 2005; Green & Baskind, 2007). While the relative weighting and importance of scholarship is somewhat inconsistent across universities, disciplines, and faculty rank (Green, 2008; Price & Cotton, 2006), the publication productivity of faculty is the major correlate for graduate program rankings from the …

The existence of a policy does not necessarily mean that a school will ‘enact’ it (Fulcher, 1997). Queensland Government’s current P-12 Curriculum Framework provides schools with a direction to achieve “a curriculum for all”. However, experience with working with secondary school staff is that they are commonly unaware of the implications of this policy to their everyday work. In fact, they usually respond to any references by the writer to a “curriculum for all” (meaning providing a curriculum for all students in their class, including those with disabilities) with “Where does it say I have to do that?” Meaning, “…where …

Two Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) are having a bite of lunch. One of the CEOs complains to the other, “You know, my company is just not making it. We can’t seem to ‘keep up with the Jones.’ Everywhere I look our competitors are making gains on our territories while we lose ground. They’re expanding while we are not. They’re earning an ‘A team’ reputation, while we’re stuck with a ‘C’. I just don’t know how to turn things around.

The Central Educational Center is a product of multiple visions, desires, and hopes. The ideal vision is outlined in a book entitled “The Eden Conspiracy” (Harless, 1997). Other perspectives include a requirement from local business that basic skills of high school graduates need to be rapidly improved, the desire of a growing local school system to provide costly industry-standard career-technical education to all high school students, the vision of a regional technical college to “dual enroll” high school students and make technical college a viable post-secondary option, and the hopes of a Governor looking for a viable model to support …

Education in the opinion of (Akindutire, 2010) is regarded by many as the key that unlocks the development of personal and national potentials of individuals including their rights and powers. However, (Abdulkareem, 2010) sees it as the best legacy a nation can provide for its citizenry, as it ensures a relative permanent change in the thinking perspective of the individual to commitment and development of the immediate environment. It is the light, without which the whole world would be in darkness, as it also serves as the basis of scientific and technological breakthrough and modernity, which have made all nations …

New York Daily News reporter Anthony McCarron, and other members of the aggressive New York sports media, got a surprising response from Derek Jeter, the shortstop for the New York Yankees, when they peppered him with a series of questions about his sluggish numbers at the beginning of the 2002 season. Jeter’s numbers were below his normal averages and, in response to questions about them, Jeter gave the following response, I don’t care about those numbers as long as I win. There are ways to win that you don’t get numbers for. If you hit a ground ball to move …

Educational leaders are responsible for the academic success of all students. As greater numbers of students exhibit disruptive behaviors, educational leaders are challenged with the task of maintaining high academic standards while simultaneously managing problem behaviors that interrupt the learning environment. Many schools have implemented character development programs aimed to decrease student disruptive behavior by increasing student prosocial skills. Character can be defined as “the emotional, intellectual and moral qualities of a person or group as well as the demonstration of these qualities in prosocial behavior” (United States Department of Education, 2008, p.1). Character education is “an inclusive term encompassing …

We have come into a time where there is of scarcity of resources, where colleges and universities are being pulled in different directions by many of its constituents, and state politicians are jockeying for which policies that they want to implement with limited or no resources to support them, which makes the support for higher education even more scant. If there was not a more urgent time to have a different mindset to transform a college or university this decade, then there likely will not be one. Knowing the obstacles in which higher education institutions need to overcome, the leadership …

The major purposes to which the results of assessment could be put were diagnosis, evaluation, guidance, grading prediction, and selection. In Nigeria, it is unfortunate that the results of many examinations have been used almost exclusively for grading and promotion exercises and inevitably there has been a neglect of diagnosis, guidance and evaluation although considerable informal use of assessment for these purposes are made by teachers in the classroom.

A culturally responsive, respectful, and inclusive academic environment is a must for Native American students. Educational institutions must work to accommodate and allow Native American cultural traditions to become an integral part of the classroom, of teaching and learning procedures and processes, and of the student experience in general (Burk, 2007). At the colleges and universities of today, Native American students often face challenges beyond that of students from the dominant, typically White, non-Hispanic culture; these challenges are reflected in low retention and college dropout rates of Native American and Alaskan Native students nationwide (Campbell, 2007). Research has indicated that …

Transfer can be defined as ‘the degree to which behaviour will be repeated in a new situation’ (Detterman and Sternberg, 1993, p. 4). Thus transfer of learning occurs when learning in one context or with one set of materials impacts on performance in another context or with related material. Pennington and Rehder (1995) borrowing from Larkin (1989) also define transfer as the use of knowledge or skill acquired in one situation in the performance of a new, novel task, a task sufficiently novel that it involves additional learning as well as the use of old knowledge. Research evidence as to …

Periodically, school operations come under intense review as we take inventory of what has worked and what improvements still need to be made. In fact we label time periods by major events and trends, e.g. back-to-basics (Smith, 1978). As we move into the second decade of a new millennium, we are reflecting and projecting to see where we have been and where we need to be going. We are asking what we have learned and what needs to occur to improve education and our country. The importance of teachers and teacher leadership in education is gaining attention (York-Barr & Duke, …
