Book Review - On The Border Of Opportunity: Education, Community, And Language At The U.S.–Mexico Line, Edmund T. Hamann Feb 1999

Book Review - On The Border Of Opportunity: Education, Community, And Language At The U.S.–Mexico Line, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

On the Border of Opportunity is a good, important, but limited book. Marleen Pugach describes the links between school and community that she, her two school-aged children, and a graduate assistant encountered during a seven-month stint in a New Mexico border town (pseudonymously called Havens). She extensively considers how binationalism was and could have been promoted in the local schools and how such promotion could distinguish the education on offer there. Pugach seems unsure whether to characterize Havens as an exemplary binational, inclusive community or whether to present a critique of Havens by chronicling what it could be but was …

Plan For The Use Of Findings For Decision-Making And Refinement Of Program, David R. Evans, Gretchen Rossman, Urvashi Sahni

Strengthening the Education of Girls in India

The project, Strengthening the Education of Girls in India, was designed in 1995 through a collaborative effort of USAID officials and Indian nationals who are experts in girls' and women's education. In the three and one-half years since the project was designed, changes have occurred in the climate of support for and thinking about girls' education in India generally and the state of Uttar Pradesh specifically. this document describes salient elements of that changing context and discusses how the project will respond to them. The document also describes how findings thus far from project implementation will shape refinement of the …

Service-Learning For Preservice Teachers: Ethical Dilemmas For Practice, David M. Donahue Jan 1999

Service-Learning For Preservice Teachers: Ethical Dilemmas For Practice, David M. Donahue

Service Learning, General

Increasingly in the United States, service-learning is being used to educate preservice teachers. Service varies greatly in its ethical foundation, however, and service-learning presents new teachers with a variety of dilemmas revealing the moral and political nature of teaching and service. This article presents one case of four preservice teachers writing curriculum as a service to a community agency hoping to promote service geared toward social justice among high school students. The case highlights ethical dilemmas faced by teachers in the process and illustrates the potential of service-learning to educate teachers for the moral imperative of their profession.

Data Warehousing Failures: Case Studies And Findings, M. Dean Fenton, M. E. Haywood, Joseph Gregory Gerard, L. E. Gonzalez, Hugh J. Watson Jan 1999

Data Warehousing Failures: Case Studies And Findings, M. Dean Fenton, M. E. Haywood, Joseph Gregory Gerard, L. E. Gonzalez, Hugh J. Watson

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Eight studies of data warehousing failures are presented. They were written based on interviews with people who were associated with the projects. The extent of the failure varies with the organization, but in all cases, the project was at least a disappointment. Read the cases and prepare a one or two page discussion of the following: 1. What’s the scope of what can be considered a data warehousing failure? Discuss. 2. What generalizations apply across the cases? 3. What do you find most interesting in the failure stories? 4. Do they provide any insights about how a failure might be …

Some Methodological Concerns When Estimating The Size Of Organizing Activities, Eric Swank, John D. Clapp Jan 1999

Some Methodological Concerns When Estimating The Size Of Organizing Activities, Eric Swank, John D. Clapp

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Researchers and organizers recognize that social movements experience periods of inception, expansion, and decline. Although the movement literature is laden with numerous theoretical formulations on this topic, there are few articles that overtly address the issue of data collection. This paper addresses this methodological issue in detail. In doing so, we use previous media research and two case studies to illustrate the problems associated with the most frequently used data sources of event size. Finally, the paper suggests several research strategies that might enhance the accuracy of those studies that try to trace the protest cycles of community organizing efforts.

Confocal Microscopy Of Plant Cells, Carol L. Wymer, Alison F. Beven, Kurt Boudonck, Clive W. Lloyd Jan 1999

Confocal Microscopy Of Plant Cells, Carol L. Wymer, Alison F. Beven, Kurt Boudonck, Clive W. Lloyd

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The increasing availability of confocal microscopy has begun a revolution in plant biology in which microscopy has again become a powerful tool for understanding structure and function. Examples of applications include: three dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the interphase microtubule array in large vacuolated epidermal cells (1); measuring cytoplasmic free calcium changes in whole maize coleoptile segments in response to phototropic and gravitropic stimuli (2); and studying symplastic phloem connections in intact Arabidopsis roots (3). The major reason for this revolution is the ability to collect clear images in three dimensions due to the lack of image degradation caused by out-of-focus …

Philosophy For Children And The Reconstruction Of Philosophy, David Kennedy Jan 1999

Philosophy For Children And The Reconstruction Of Philosophy, David Kennedy

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

In this paper I trace the dialogical and narrative dimensions of the philosophical tradition and explore how they are reconfigured in the notion of community of philosophical inquiry (CPI), the mainstay of the collection of novels and discussion plans known as Philosophy for Children. After considering the ontology and epistemology of dialogue, I argue that narrative has replaced exposition in our understanding of philosophical discourse and that CPI represents a narrative context in which truth comes to represent the best story, in a discursive location in which there are always multiple stories. Finally, I raise the issue of children's philosophical …

A Qualitative Study Of Social Dynamics In An Inclusive Preschool, Elizabeth Erwin, Elizabeth Alimaras, Nikki Price Jan 1999

A Qualitative Study Of Social Dynamics In An Inclusive Preschool, Elizabeth Erwin, Elizabeth Alimaras, Nikki Price

Department of Teaching and Learning Scholarship and Creative Works

This qualitative pilot study explored social dynamics within a typical preschool classroom that included Ryan, a 3-year-old with severe visual impairments. Observational and interview data were collected in an effort to provide a full and rich portrait of events, experiences, and perceptions. The following themes emerged, which provide new insight about the social dynamics of one early childhood inclusive setting: 1) social encounters, 2) initiations and terminations, 3) communication breakdown, 4) conflicts and negotiation, and 5) social acceptance. The findings indicated that Ryan was an active participant in shared social experiences with his peers, which contributed to his membership and …

Reviewing Software As A Means Of Enhancing Instruction, Marcus D. Childress, Guang-Lea Lee, Gregory P. Sherman Jan 1999

Reviewing Software As A Means Of Enhancing Instruction, Marcus D. Childress, Guang-Lea Lee, Gregory P. Sherman

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

A software review procedure developed by the authors is described. The procedure centers around a form that extends the functionality of traditional software evaluation forms by enhancing the use of the computer software in the early childhood classroom. The form encourages teachers to discover ways a piece of software can be integrated across disciplines and used as an anchor for instruction. Users of the review form are also encouraged to examine ways the software motivates the user to remain engaged in its use. The majority of the review form emphasizes the important role of the teacher in identifying outcomes or …

Developing A Vibrant Model For Improving The Quality Of Elementary Education In Pakistan, Muhammad Memon Jan 1999

Developing A Vibrant Model For Improving The Quality Of Elementary Education In Pakistan, Muhammad Memon

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

The public education system of Pakistan mostly offers children a prescriptive catalogue of knowledge what Freire (1972) calls it a 'banking concept' in education. Hawes and Stephens (1990) argue that today's schools and children are invariably the victim of yesterday's system. During the last three decades, the quality of education has become a serious concern among the policy makers and donor agencies. In general terms, quality is defined in term of efficiency in achieving the desired students learning outcomes predetermined in the policies. In Pakistan, three types of education reforms namely efficiency; quality; curricularbased (Riddell, 1998) were launched but these …

The Lifelong Learner And Technology, Dia L. Davis Jan 1999

The Lifelong Learner And Technology, Dia L. Davis

Graduate Research Papers

The teaching strategies of the educator alter to suit the needs of the students and technology. The content integration process takes time. It has been stated that teachers' first technology projects generate excitement, but often little content learning. Often it takes a few years until teachers can use technology effectively in core subject areas.

Teachers learn to use computer technologies and learn how to bring content learning to the forefront with, in some cases, impressive results on the part of the students. Teachers eventually learn to view the learning process in concert with their new technologies and come to understand …

Reconceptualizing The Role Of Headteachers As Pedagogical Leaders In Pakistan: Implications For Policy Reforms, Muhammad Memon Jan 1999

Reconceptualizing The Role Of Headteachers As Pedagogical Leaders In Pakistan: Implications For Policy Reforms, Muhammad Memon

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

Since its independence, Pakistan has launched a series of education reforms, which are either related to curriculum development or teacher education, but no effort has yet been made to address the issues relating to recognition of headteachers' role within the framework of educational management development (Memon, et aI. 1999). However currently the government of Pakistan seems to be cognizant of the importance of professional development of headteachers and others who are responsible for improving the quality of education in schools (Government of Pakistan, 1998). Literature in the area of educational management suggests that schools cannot function effectively without the dynamic …

Critical Thinking Requires Critical Questioning, Karen J. Thoms Jan 1999

Critical Thinking Requires Critical Questioning, Karen J. Thoms

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Just what is a critical thinker? According to Richard Paul (1990), a critical thinker is someone who is able to think well and fair mindedly about his or her own beliefs and viewpoints as well as those which are diametrically opposed. The critical thinker does not just think about these beliefs and viewpoints, but explores and appreciates their adequacy, cohesion, and reasonableness. Attitudes and passions are included. To become a critical thinker is not to be the same person you are now, but only with better abilities; it is to become a different person (page iii).

Critical thinking is expected …

Are We Going To Cyberspace, Or Is This Just Another Trip To Abilene?, William K. Jackson Jan 1999

Are We Going To Cyberspace, Or Is This Just Another Trip To Abilene?, William K. Jackson

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

The costs of technology are high, and the options for its use are varied. In order to avoid arriving at a technological Abilene, we must continually ask and answer the question "what ought we do with technology?" and not "what can we do with technology?" Purpose must lead deployment. Otherwise, we risk expending great efforts and scarce resources to produce the educational equivalent of "Thank you for calling, press 1 if you. . ."

Interdisciplinary Teaching And Learning, Deborah Dezure Jan 1999

Interdisciplinary Teaching And Learning, Deborah Dezure

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Interdisciplinary initiatives are proliferating throughout higher education at an unprecedented rate (Edwards, 1996; Gaff and Ratcliff, 1997; Klein, 1996). They can be found in general education, replacing and augmenting distribution requirements; in emerging disciplines, such as cultural and gender studies, environmental studies, and neuroscience; in new curricular designs, such as learning communities, capstone courses, and service learning; and in the new pedagogies, such as collaborative learning, discovery and problembased learning, and the use of technology, particularly the Internet for instruction.

If we want our students to engage in complex intellectual tasks to integrate the insights of different disciplines, then lets …
