In The Classroom: The Winter Tradition Project (Feb. '91), Michael P. French, Kathy Everts Danielson
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
In an effort to involve all students and to educate them about the cultures of other countries, I developed a "winter tradition" project. The project required that students write brief descriptions of things their families do during the holidays or winter months. These were compiled into a class booklet. The winter tradition project proved to an excellent activity for middle school students because it allowed them to learn about each other while increasing their writing, computer, and interpersonal skills. I introduced this five-day project to five language arts classes of 20-25 students each.

Basic and NonFormal Education Systems (BANFES) Project
Staff development has been a central theme for the BANFES project over the past 5 years and training has indeed pervaded every aspect of the project in all its goals, tasks and accomplishments. Trained and confident Ministry of Education (MOE) personnel were considered critical to assure effective systems, procedures, curriculum and materials. It was expected that trained individuals would continue to improve Lesotho's education system.
This report is a review of tasks and accomplishments associated with the coordination of training for a complex and decentralized project which involved over 10 000 participants in 300 activities.

Basic and NonFormal Education Systems (BANFES) Project
There are no outstanding evaluation recommendations at Component II (NTTC), so I have chosen to report my work by logframe outputs, using the question and answer format developed by the Project Evaluation Office for conducting interviews and collecting data on initiatives which were not otherwise evaluated. The second section relates my work to the relevant contractual obligations. Finally, I attempt to summarize what has been accomplished, and to reflect on the current situation and possible directions for the future.
My work with BANFES in Lesotho covers the period beginning in September 1985 and concluding in February 1991. Throughout this period, …

This study presents a modified transactive planning process intended to improve communication and cooperation between public sector resource managers and private sector businesses that serve visitors to an outdoor recreation resource. The elements of the transactive planning process are illustrated and applied in a case study approach with the U.S. Forest Service and commercial outfitters adjacent to a forest recreation area. Outcomes of the planning process indicate that public managers and private businesses share many of the same management goals and concerns. They also agree they can and should address these concerns cooperatively. Results of the study indicate that this …

Silurian rocks in Kentucky are exposed on the eastern and western flanks of the Cincinnati Arch, a large-wavelength cratonic structure separating the Appalachian foreland basin from the intracratonic Illinois Basin. The Cincinnati Arch area experienced uplift during latest Ordovician-early Silurian time, so that the exposed Silurian section is relatively thin due to onlap and post-Silurian erosional truncation on the arch. On both flanks of the arch, dolomitic carbonates predominate, but the section on the eastern side reflects a more shale-rich ramp that faced eastern Appalachian source areas. In the Silurian section on the western side of the arch, which apparently …

School Ka Sabaq: Literacy In A Girls Primary School In Rural Pakistan, Iffat Farah
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
This paper (which is part of a larger ethnographic study) describes literacy learning practices in the context of a girls' school in rural Pakistan. In this context, school ka sabaq is recognized as involving reading and writing activities, and behavior particular to the institution of the school. A description of the reading and writing activities as well as the division of time and space in the school shows that literacy activities are reflected in and determined by the context of the particular institution within which they are learned and practiced. The author also describes school-community relations and the community's goals …

There are many societal factors within and outside the academy with which we must contend to help each student reach his or her potential. Most of all we must learn to recognize when the differences we see arise from the student, his cultural background, or the fact that he is, after all, a human being with much in common with all human beings.

Learning does not take place when the instructor does all the work. It is necessary for the students to get back into the game and do some of the grappling as they do in the case method of teaching.

The universal complaint of faculty is that there is too much content to cover in the time allotted. Rather than complaining, perhaps we should re- examine how we go about choosing the content to include in a course. We might find we have more than we really need.

In spite of all evidence to the contrary some people continue to believe that student evaluation of teaching is “nothing but a popularity contest.” How much more useful it is to recognize what the students have to offer in the way of feedback on teaching.

A survey was conducted on the quality of preparation in teacher education of student teachers at the University of Northern Iowa and their performance level during student teaching. Student teachers were asked to assess teacher education program contributions to 29 competencies relevant to teaching effectiveness; plus their overall teacher effectiveness. Similarly; cooperating teachers were asked to assess the same competencies as exhibited by the student teachers they supervised. Of the 369 (78.5 percent) questionnaires returned; 192 were from student teachers and 177 were from cooperating teachers. Data analysis was based on matched pairs of responses. An overall summary of the …
