Build Strong Bodies And Minds Through Service Learning, David Sederberg
Build Strong Bodies And Minds Through Service Learning, David Sederberg
Purdue P-12 Networking Summit & Poster Session
In Physics and Astronomy at Purdue, service learning is an essential component to our outreach programs. While providing authentic deliverables to the “customer,” service learning engages individuals in ways through which they are able to make meaningful contributions, while at the same time developing their own knowledge and expertise in an area of personal interest or commitment. That learning may involve leadership, instructional design, communication of science fundamentals and applications to K-12 and general audiences, research, reflective practice, and the acquisition of skills that last a lifetime. This presentation illustrates ways in which we leverage resources between service learning and …
Emotional Legal Arguments And A Broken Leg, Rubens Damasceno-Morais
Emotional Legal Arguments And A Broken Leg, Rubens Damasceno-Morais
OSSA Conference Archive
We intend to examine ways that emotions may be intertwined within argumentative legal discourses. From the transcript of a brief trial in a Court of Appeal in Brazil we have the opportunity to observe how the emotional and rational reasoning live together in a deliberation among magistrates. “The leg broken case” allow us to examine how judges define the value of compensation to be paid in cases of moral damage. We show that not only technical arguments are the compounds of one decision; subjectivity is also important in that legal context. We would yet confirm what jurists and …

Including “Anyone” In The “Anytime, Anywhere” Paradigm: Strategies To Build Aceess To Distance Education, Kathleen P. King, Greene M. Thompson
Including “Anyone” In The “Anytime, Anywhere” Paradigm: Strategies To Build Aceess To Distance Education, Kathleen P. King, Greene M. Thompson
Florida Distance Learning Association Conference
In the past 30 years, distance learning has come a long way in innovative technologies advancing opportunities for teaching and learning. In 2011, the public understands and accepts widely the once surprising concept of “Anytime, Anywhere” learning (Allen & Seaman, 2010). To expand our educational commitment to access and equity, this paper addresses the need and means to incorporate “Anyone” into this paradigm.
While we spend a great deal of time and effort teaching educators to adopt and design effective online learning, we focus much less on creating welcoming and accessible online learning environments for every student. This paper has …
The Missing Link: Discovering Your Facilitation Power For Online Course, Kathleen P. King, Heba Abuzayyad-Nuseibeh
The Missing Link: Discovering Your Facilitation Power For Online Course, Kathleen P. King, Heba Abuzayyad-Nuseibeh
Florida Distance Learning Association Conference
Unfortunately, most of our faculty development related to online learning has been regarding designing courses. Yet where do we faculty spend most of our time? We spend it facilitating the courses, semester after semester. However, one of the reasons more one provides more guidance about online facilitation is that many people assume teaching online is more or less the same as traditional instruction. In fact, nothing can be further from the truth (Fink, 2003). Online learning shifts the focus from teacher to learners, and our role as educators from “all knowing experts” dispensing knowledge, to facilitators of more self-directed and …
Online Instruction Of Dyslexic Students: A Call To Action, Matthew G. Kenney
Online Instruction Of Dyslexic Students: A Call To Action, Matthew G. Kenney
Florida Distance Learning Association Conference
This paper is a call to action for academic and information technology industry leaders to develop a generalizable online instructional model tailored to the learning needs of those suffering from dyslexia. It is estimated that 35% of entrepreneurs are dyslexic (Logan, 2009). According to the Sloan Consortium, online instruction is the fastest growing segment of the higher education industry (Allen & Seaman, 2010). Online entrepreneurship students may provide researchers with an opportunity to identify dyslexics clustered in higher proportions than other academic disciplines. There is no evidence to show entrepreneurship students are more likely to be dyslexic than other students, …
Online Learning Communities: Enhancing Undergraduate Students ‘ Acquisition Of Information Skills, Ling Wang, Noraida Domínguez-Flores
Online Learning Communities: Enhancing Undergraduate Students ‘ Acquisition Of Information Skills, Ling Wang, Noraida Domínguez-Flores
Florida Distance Learning Association Conference
Since the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL, 2000) approved the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, many efforts have been made to help undergraduate students develop the information skills they need. Although there are different activities that have been developed to facilitate the acquisition of information skills and work with the students’ limitations and the problems that are evidenced, and research has identified librarians as the key resource to educate students and to help them develop better research skills (Mundava, & Chaudhuri, 2007; Wilbe, 2006), the reality is that librarians do not have enough time available to …

Finally, the use of video conferencing in Elluminate in Blackboard for graduate online courses is described. Participants will be invited to use their …
Curriculum Impact On Educational Philosophy Identification, Rebecca Tuttle
Curriculum Impact On Educational Philosophy Identification, Rebecca Tuttle
Student Research Symposium
An educator’s teaching philosophy represents their personal beliefs regarding the purpose of classroom instruction and the methods used to facilitate learning. While an individual’s educational philosophy often transforms over time, more research is needed to characterize influences on evolving theory and practice. This survey-based study was conducted to determine if the curricular content has an impact on teaching methodology despite a teacher’s philosophical identification. The study population comprised of adult learner-educators enrolled in a graduate educational philosophy class. The subjects were surveyed after completing a term examining the main tenets of five main educational philosophies (Liberal, Behavioral, Progressive, Humanist, Radical). …

Anxiously Anticipating! A Parallel Journey To An Art And Equestrian Camp For Children With Disabilities, Lorna C. Timmerman, Ruth E. Jefferson
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
In many communities, there are few opportunities for children with disabilities to participate in engaging summer camp experiences. This poster will highlight one successful endeavor that provided this much-needed opportunity to children with disabilities. Little has been explored regarding how parents go about preparing their children for the camp experience that is to come; and few studies have documented the planning and preparation by camp staff. This presentation will explore one family’s efforts to prepare and support a child’s first venture into organized summer programming. At the same time, this presentation will detail the preparation (and surprising level of anxiety) …
What It's Like To Be A Migrant Worker, Jonathan Harris
What It's Like To Be A Migrant Worker, Jonathan Harris
Migration in Global Context Symposium
This lesson was used for my seventh and eighth grade students to illustrate the difficulties in a life of a migrant worker. Our school changed our main fund raiser from selling World's Finest Chocolate to Fair Trade Chocolate over concerns of fair wages and conditions for the workers. This lesson, combined with a lesson from the parent volunteers on the business side, illustrated how unfair the conditions and pay were for migrant workers.
