The Study Of Nontraditional Student Satisfaction With Academic Support Services Offered At Western Michigan University, Natalie Morton
Dissertations
This study examines the impact from the adaptation of lean manufacturing strategies on key external financial performance measures as reported by a number of management accounting methods. The research is not concerned with creating a justification for lean manufacturing strategies but rather it evaluates the inadequacies of standard financial reporting methods to accurately reflect operational improvements possible in the key performance measures through the early stages of a lean program.
ProModel simulation software is used in conjunction with Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic to create a simulated repetitive manufacturing environment and production planning and control system. The study examines the …

The Relationship Between The Success Tendencies Indicator And Academic Achievement And Behavioral Adjustment, Ted Bartlett
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between the 50-item Success Tendencies Indicator (STI), composed of the two subscales, the Success Tendencies Scale (STS) and the Positive Impression Scale (PIS), and the academic achievement and behavioral adjustment of high school freshmen. The STI was administered by social studies teachers in a suburban public high school in the Mid-Western United States at the end of the 1999–2000 school year. Data from 338 freshman students were analyzed. Success was indicated by a high weighted Grade Point Average (GPA) and a low Discipline Incidents Number (DIN). Scores on the …

In 1997, the Michigan Department of Career Development unveiled the Michigan Career Preparation System, which provided guidelines and funds for school districts to offer career education opportunities for students. Theresearch also provided a framework for understanding all of the components of both the Michigan Comprehensive …
Two Decades Of Research On The Problem Solving Inventory A Call For Empirical Clarity, Muninder Kaur Ahluwalia, Lisa A. Suzuki
Two Decades Of Research On The Problem Solving Inventory A Call For Empirical Clarity, Muninder Kaur Ahluwalia, Lisa A. Suzuki
Department of Counseling Scholarship and Creative Works
Heppner, Witty, and Dixon's review of 2 decades of research on the Problem Solving Inventory (PSI) provides highlights of more than 120 studies relating problem-solving appraisal to psychological adjustment, physical health, coping, and educational and vocational issues. Although clearly an impressive body of literature, the level of data reported is uneven with attention to effect sizes (e.g., correlations) and sample descriptors (e.g., race/ethnicity, n size, gender). Acknowledging the importance of the PSI and this major review, we provide commentary on the need for a meta-analysis and the continual expansion of research on the PSI with respect to diversity issues (i.e., …
Wellness Among Freshmen At The University Of Tennessee, Laura Bilderback
Wellness Among Freshmen At The University Of Tennessee, Laura Bilderback
Masters Theses
Because health and wellness are declining in college-aged students, it is important for college student personnel administrators to become knowledgeable of wellness programming. Currently available information on students’ wellness at The University of Tennessee (UTK) is incomplete. This study examined the knowledge of wellness of first year students at UTK.
A descriptive survey was conducted in First Year Studies (FYS 100) classes to first year students at UTK during the Fall 2003 semester. The key purpose of this descriptive study was to examine UTK first year students’ knowledge of wellness and the extent to which their lifestyle behaviors reflect potential …

Examining The Relationship Between Religious Orientation And Eating Disturbances, Melissa H. Smith, P. Scott Richards, Christopher J. Maglio
Faculty Publications
The relationship between religion and eating concerns is receiving increasing empirical attention. The current investigation sought to examine the relationship between eating attitudes and religious orientation, utilizing the fourfold typology of religious orientation. A curvilinear relationship was found between religious orientation and eating attitudes among a subclinical college population and a clinical population of individuals receiving inpatient treatment for eating disorders, particularly among extrinsically orientated individuals with diagnosis of bulimia nervosa.

Aiding At-Risk Students, Jeremy Baldwin
Aiding At-Risk Students, Jeremy Baldwin
Honors Theses
Kalamazoo's Loy Norrix High School was the location of a study in conjunction with the institution's school-wide achievement process to aid at-risk students. Characterized by poor attendance, behavioral problems and/or failing two or more subjects, at-risk students are monitored more closely through school-wide efforts. According to the Michigan Department of Education, the effort to hep struggling students implicates the use of supplemental services before or after school to help students in the core subjects: math, science, social studies, and English. Norrix has successfully begun its own efforts to improve the overall academic success of the student body by employing the …

Considerations In Counseling International Students, Michael L. Williams
Considerations In Counseling International Students, Michael L. Williams
Graduate Research Papers
Much has been written about the culture shock that international students experience while studying at a United States college or university. Sometimes adjustments to new living conditions, language, food and culture have exacerbated latent emotional issues in some international students or contributed to the development of emotional disturbances in others. While living in their home countries, many students from other cultures rely on sources such as older family members or spiritual, religious, or medical experts to discuss emotional conflicts. This population often views counseling as performing two primary services: one, to meet education or career goals; or, two, to deal …

Personality Type And Student Affairs Graduate Students, Meinholz J. Meinholz
Graduate Research Papers
The use of personality type information about student affairs graduate students is , interesting to speculate about. A graduate program could identify what populations of students it is attracting for enrollment. Such information could allow them to adjust their recruitment techniques in order to attract a more diverse student body. Understanding the personality types of students in the classroom would provide insight into the most effective instruction techniques. Personality type information could also be helpful for advisors to use in assisting students with selecting electives and practicum or internship experiences that complement their type. Graduate students could learn more about …
