Autism Spectrum Disorder And Family Impact, Angela J. Goodwin
Autism Spectrum Disorder And Family Impact, Angela J. Goodwin
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Primary caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) face various specific challenges no matter the severity of their child’s ASD. Children with autism experience difficulty with social interaction and communication and experience restricted or repetitive thoughts or patterns of behavior. Parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) face challenges directly related to their child’s diagnosis. Parenting a child with autism exhibits high amounts of stress, and affects mothers and fathers differently. Parents who are able to successfully find coping mechanisms such as increased social support, participation in their child’s therapy, and increased optimism can assist them in parenting …
Finding The Gold Standard Intervention For Social Skills Deficits In Autism Spectrum Disorders, Molly Delia Hunholz
Finding The Gold Standard Intervention For Social Skills Deficits In Autism Spectrum Disorders, Molly Delia Hunholz
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review focuses on finding research supported techniques to teach social skills to students with autism and to compare each curriculum in terms of generalization of skills, acquisition of new skills, ease of parent use, and student enjoyment. The goal of this review is to discover whether there really is a “gold standard” for social skill curriculum for students with autism or if there are many different curricula that are “gold standards” in specific skill areas. This literature review answers many questions about the way social skills are taught to students with ASD. The results lead one to ask …
Effective Learning And Behavioral Strategies And Supports For Low Functioning Students With Autism, Brennan O'Brien Mckeag
Effective Learning And Behavioral Strategies And Supports For Low Functioning Students With Autism, Brennan O'Brien Mckeag
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis set out to research current literature and research regarding various aspects of working with low functioning students with autism. It contains information regarding learning styles for typically functioning students, as well as learning styles and strategies for low functioning students with autism. Examined closely in this thesis are the pieces that go into developing a comprehensive treatment plan for students with autism. It covers three different levels of academic and behavior interventions, as well as the implications they could hold for low functioning students with autism. Communication skills and strategies were also examined and expert practitioner interviews were …
Social Skills And Students With Moderate To Severe Disabilities: Can Community Based Instruction Help?, Carissa Hernandez, Saili S. Kulkarni
Social Skills And Students With Moderate To Severe Disabilities: Can Community Based Instruction Help?, Carissa Hernandez, Saili S. Kulkarni
Faculty Publications
The purpose of this research study was to determine how Community Based Instruction (CBI) affects the social skills of middle school students with moderate to severe disabilities. Existing literature is limited in findings related to the influence of CBI on middle school students with moderate to severe disabilities. This qualitative study was completed using interviews and observations. Participants included students, teachers, and paraprofessionals from a middle school in Southern California. The findings of this study are intended to support the use of CBI in middle school special education classrooms and to demonstrate how a functional program can improve the social …
The Effect Of Project-Based Poetry Writing Intervention On Writing Attitudes Among Students With Severe Learning Disabilities, John M. Bonanni
The Effect Of Project-Based Poetry Writing Intervention On Writing Attitudes Among Students With Severe Learning Disabilities, John M. Bonanni
The Graduate Review
Writing attitudes of three learners with severe disabilities were surveyed in a substantially separate special education classroom within a public school in Massachusetts in order to determine the effect on learners’ writing attitudes after a project-based creative writing intervention in poetry. Writing skills were measured using teacher-created rubrics and attitudes were measured using pre and post survey data. Primary diagnoses of students involved included Intellectual Impairment, Autism, and Traumatic Brain Injury. Findings indicated that the intervention was most successful for the student with autism, moderately successful for the student with Traumatic Brain Injury, and not successful for the student with …
Public School Principals’ Attitudes Regarding The Classroom Participation Of Students With Autism Who Exhibit Challenging Behavior, Taryn G. Traylor
Public School Principals’ Attitudes Regarding The Classroom Participation Of Students With Autism Who Exhibit Challenging Behavior, Taryn G. Traylor
Theses and Dissertations
Students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) present challenges for principals supervising both general and special education teachers. Evidence-based practices designed to address the challenging behavior and academic needs of this population exists, but there are numerous contextual factors that affect the ability of principals to effectively assist their teachers in implementation. The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between principal leader’s demographic characteristics, the influence of contextual factors, and leadership attitudes that affect their development and priorities for their schools. The implementation science framework and collective impact theory was investigated as a conceptual framework to analyze these …
Parent-Implemented Communication Intervention For Preschool-Aged Children With Autism, Heather M. Coleman
Parent-Implemented Communication Intervention For Preschool-Aged Children With Autism, Heather M. Coleman
Theses and Dissertations
Exploring the interventions that promote expressive, verbal language for preschool-aged children with autism is essential. When a child is lacking the ability to communicate, parents express that they would like their child to speak. B.F. Skinner (1957) proposed that the mand repertoire (communicative requests) should be an initial focus of language training. Mand training has been shown to be effective for teaching children with autism to communicate. However, many studies exploring mand training utilize highly trained instructors for intervention implementation. Early childhood best practices recommend the use of family-centered interventions and teaching within the natural environment. This study followed these …
The Impact Of An Exercise Intervention On Stereotypical Behaviors In A Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder., Kirsten Nouzovsky
The Impact Of An Exercise Intervention On Stereotypical Behaviors In A Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder., Kirsten Nouzovsky
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of an exercise intervention in reducing stereotypical behaviors in a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A single subject A-B-A-B design with a repeating baseline was used for this investigation. The research design will be implemented to determine if an exercise program (i.e., cycling) impact the frequency of stereotypical behaviors demonstrated by a child with ASD. Results indicate that an exercise intervention has the potential to decrease stereotypical behaviors in a child with ASD. While stereotypical behaviors have always been shown to decrease immediately after physical exercise-based interventions (Kern et …

Hobby Preferences And Physical Activity Participation Among Children With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorder, Scott M. Russell
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
BACKGROUND: Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) exhibit low physical activity levels and are at an increased risk for health problems related to sedentary behaviors. Hobby preferences have been shown to influence physical activity participation. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine the hobby preferences of children with ASD and determine if there are differences depending on the children’s physical activity level and the nature of their preferred activities. A secondary purpose is to describe the hobby preferences of children with ASD. METHODS: Participants include 98 nine-year-old children (with and without ASD) from the National Growing up …
