Revision Strategies Of Deaf Student Writers, Sue Livingston

Deaf high school students at different schools shared second drafts of their own narratives via an electronic bulletin board after conferencing with their respective teachers. This article characterizes the kinds of questions teachers asked during the conferences and the kinds of revisions the students made between first and second drafts. Results indicate that teachers most often ask questions that require student to provide more information; yet these questions do not affect revision as much as questions which require students to rephrase specific language. The literature of adult education provides a broad spectrum of characteristics necessary for adult educators to practice in this emerging field. It was the purpose of this study to take some major steps toward developing an assessment instrument indicating the beliefs, feelings and behaviors adult educators need to possess. The instrument emphasizes the teacher's personal and contextual identification, actions and competencies in the classroom, and philosophical beliefs for guiding practice. Judgments Of Restrictiveness, Social Acceptability, And Usage: Review Of Research On Procedures To Decrease Behavior, Robert L. Morgan

Research on professionals’, consumers’, and others’ judgments of the restrictiveness, social acceptability, and estimated frequency of use of procedures to decrease behavior were reviewed. General findings were that (a) respondents generally were consistent in rating procedures from least to most restrictive; (b) most respondents agreed that procedures judged more restrictive should be used as a last resort; (c) more restrictive procedures were not frequently used in practice; (d) respondents generally agreed that less restrictive procedures were more socially acceptable, and vice versa; and (e) the social acceptability of procedures changed as a function of contextual variables. Making Related Service Decisions For Students With Severe Handicaps In Public Schools: Roles, Criteria, And Authority, Michael Giangreco

Students with severe handicaps frequently require related services from occupational therapists, physical therapists, or communication specialists to benefit from instruction. Effective delivery of related services requires the existence of a shared framework for decision-making among educators, related service personnel, and families. This framework may be broadly characterized by: (a) the roles served by related service professionals, (b) the criteria used to make related service decisions, and (c) the authority for making decisions. Desensitization To Medical Examining Equipment Through Learner Control In A Child With Severe Mental Retardation, Michael Giangreco, William J. Keogh

While the psychological literature is replete with examples of desensitization to phobic stimuli, few studies have documented successful interventions conducted with individuals identified as mentally retarded. The study describes desensitization to basic medical examining equipment in a youngster with severe mental retardation and autistic tendencies. Following desensitization to feared stimuli through the repeated exposure of baseline, intervention was initiated on the remaining feared stimuli through a learner control technique which combined modeling, behavioral rehearsal, and a variation of contact desensitization (Ritter, 1968). There is a high degree of educational need in a correctional setting. In one states, 60% of the total number incarcerated are unable to read and write. The increase of that population is of some concern. In 1925, state and federal prisons held 79 people per one-hundred thousand inmates, and in 1985 the number had risen to 201 per one-hundred thousand. If adult education has as one of its goals a contribution toward enhancing the quality of individual lives and society in general, then the way in which correctional residents are taught is important. Postsecondary Education For Students With Learning Disabilities, J. Ron Nelson, Benjamin Lignugaris/Kraft

Increasingly, students with learning disabilities are attending community colleges and traditional 4-year colleges and universities. This article presents the results of a review of the literature on services available or recommended for students with learning disabilities. The results suggest that postsecondary institutions have begun to provide a wide array of services to these students. There is little empirical evidence, however, on the effectiveness of those services. An agenda for future research is also discussed.
