The Effects Of Added Purpose On Fine Motor Performance In Learning Disabled Children, Sarah Lynn Austin
The Effects Of Added Purpose On Fine Motor Performance In Learning Disabled Children, Sarah Lynn Austin
Masters Theses
The idea that occupations which offer added levels of purpose elicit a high quality of performance is widely accepted within occupational therapy. In this experiment involving fine motor performance, fifty-three learning disabled children were randomly assigned to two groups. It was hypothesized that children cutting out a circle, presented as a wheel which would complete a paper truck, would cut more accurately than those who cut out the same circle without the suggestion of it being used as a wheel. Accuracy was assessed by measuring the area of the children's cutting errors. The experimental design included the use of a …

Revision Strategies Of Deaf Student Writers, Sue Livingston
Revision Strategies Of Deaf Student Writers, Sue Livingston
Publications and Research
Deaf high school students at different schools shared second drafts of their own narratives via an electronic bulletin board after conferencing with their respective teachers. This article characterizes the kinds of questions teachers asked during the conferences and the kinds of revisions the students made between first and second drafts. Results indicate that teachers most often ask questions that require student to provide more information; yet these questions do not affect revision as much as questions which require students to rephrase specific language. Students typically either added or substituted words or phrases that showed both similarities to and differences from …

Identifying Appropriate Adult Educator Practice: Beliefs, Feelings And Behaviors, John A. Henschke Edd
Identifying Appropriate Adult Educator Practice: Beliefs, Feelings And Behaviors, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
The literature of adult education provides a broad spectrum of characteristics necessary for adult educators to practice in this emerging field. It was the purpose of this study to take some major steps toward developing an assessment instrument indicating the beliefs, feelings and behaviors adult educators need to possess. The instrument emphasizes the teacher's personal and contextual identification, actions and competencies in the classroom, and philosophical beliefs for guiding practice. Two major groups totaling six hundred adult educators were used to test and refine the instrument: faculty in an Adult Basic Education/General Education Development/English as a Second Language Program in …
Judgments Of Restrictiveness, Social Acceptability, And Usage: Review Of Research On Procedures To Decrease Behavior, Robert L. Morgan
Judgments Of Restrictiveness, Social Acceptability, And Usage: Review Of Research On Procedures To Decrease Behavior, Robert L. Morgan
Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications
Research on professionals’, consumers’, and others’ judgments of the restrictiveness, social acceptability, and estimated frequency of use of procedures to decrease behavior were reviewed. General findings were that (a) respondents generally were consistent in rating procedures from least to most restrictive; (b) most respondents agreed that procedures judged more restrictive should be used as a last resort; (c) more restrictive procedures were not frequently used in practice; (d) respondents generally agreed that less restrictive procedures were more socially acceptable, and vice versa; and (e) the social acceptability of procedures changed as a function of contextual variables. Problems related to research …
An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Race And Gender And National Student Placement In Programs For The Educable Mentally Retarded, Learning-Disabled, And Seriously Emotionally Disturbed From 1976 Through 1984, Robert Frederick Richardson Jr.
An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Race And Gender And National Student Placement In Programs For The Educable Mentally Retarded, Learning-Disabled, And Seriously Emotionally Disturbed From 1976 Through 1984, Robert Frederick Richardson Jr.
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Both prior to and since the passage of 94-142 in 1975, researchers and policy analysts have raised consistent concerns about the overrepresentation of black males in EMR and ED programs, especially in view of an often noted disproportion of white males in LD programs.;All of the empirical research on overrepresentation since 1975 has been characterized by one or more of the following limitations: (a) Small sample populations were drawn from one school district or state, (b) Larger samples, when studied, were analyzed at one specific point in time rather than over a period of time, (c) The power of the …
Making Related Service Decisions For Students With Severe Handicaps In Public Schools: Roles, Criteria, And Authority, Michael Giangreco
Making Related Service Decisions For Students With Severe Handicaps In Public Schools: Roles, Criteria, And Authority, Michael Giangreco
College of Education and Social Services Faculty Publications
Students with severe handicaps frequently require related services from occupational therapists, physical therapists, or communication specialists to benefit from instruction. Effective delivery of related services requires the existence of a shared framework for decision-making among educators, related service personnel, and families. This framework may be broadly characterized by: (a) the roles served by related service professionals, (b) the criteria used to make related service decisions, and (c) the authority for making decisions. Differences between team members regarding roles, criteria, and authority perspectives may pose threats to the development of a shared framework, while similarities may provide foundations upon which to …

Desensitization To Medical Examining Equipment Through Learner Control In A Child With Severe Mental Retardation, Michael Giangreco, William J. Keogh
Desensitization To Medical Examining Equipment Through Learner Control In A Child With Severe Mental Retardation, Michael Giangreco, William J. Keogh
College of Education and Social Services Faculty Publications
While the psychological literature is replete with examples of desensitization to phobic stimuli, few studies have documented successful interventions conducted with individuals identified as mentally retarded. The study describes desensitization to basic medical examining equipment in a youngster with severe mental retardation and autistic tendencies. Following desensitization to feared stimuli through the repeated exposure of baseline, intervention was initiated on the remaining feared stimuli through a learner control technique which combined modeling, behavioral rehearsal, and a variation of contact desensitization (Ritter, 1968). Results of a return-to-baseline design suggested that the medical examinations feared most by the child were of the …

Use Of Appropriate Learning Techniques For Teaching Adult Residents In A Correctional Setting, John A. Henschke Edd
Use Of Appropriate Learning Techniques For Teaching Adult Residents In A Correctional Setting, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
There is a high degree of educational need in a correctional setting. In one states, 60% of the total number incarcerated are unable to read and write. The increase of that population is of some concern. In 1925, state and federal prisons held 79 people per one-hundred thousand inmates, and in 1985 the number had risen to 201 per one-hundred thousand. If adult education has as one of its goals a contribution toward enhancing the quality of individual lives and society in general, then the way in which correctional residents are taught is important. During the 1989 winter semester, a …

A Study Of The Discriminative Function Of Six Variables In 9-12-Year-Old Males With Learning Disabilities, Kenneth M. Hanig
Dissertations
Problem
Greater discriminative power to clarify the diagnostic category of learning disabilities is needed. Research identifies many types of learning disabled populations. Studies do not indicate that the six variables used in this project had been combined and used in a project prior to this. Using measures such as Sentence Repeat, Synonyms, Digits Forward/Backwards, Design Copy, Nonsense Words, and Visual Pattern Matching, this project studied the responses of an LD sample to these subtests and their ability to discriminate among a verbally impaired sample, a spatially impaired sample, and a control group.
Method
Six subtests were developed, which, according to …

A Study Of The Relationship Of Social Planning Processes To The Social Competence Of Learning-Disabled Adolescents, Roberta Swithers Barton
A Study Of The Relationship Of Social Planning Processes To The Social Competence Of Learning-Disabled Adolescents, Roberta Swithers Barton
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study addressed three questions: (1) Are social planning processes, i.e., means-ends thinking, knowledge of social conventions, and social schematic ability, related to each other? (2) Are they related to the perceived social competence of learning disabled (SLD) adolescents? (3) Are they determinants of differences in perceived social competence?;Martin Ford's (1982) Social Competence Nomination Form (SCNF) assessed the social competence of 59 SLD adolescents from The New Community School in Richmond, Virginia. Extreme groups of SCNF scorers were compared on three social planning skill measures: Means-Ends Problem-Solving Procedure (MEPS) (Spivack, Shure & Platt, 1981) and the Comprehension and Picture Arrangement …
Postsecondary Education For Students With Learning Disabilities, J. Ron Nelson, Benjamin Lignugaris/Kraft
Postsecondary Education For Students With Learning Disabilities, J. Ron Nelson, Benjamin Lignugaris/Kraft
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Increasingly, students with learning disabilities are attending community colleges and traditional 4-year colleges and universities. This article presents the results of a review of the literature on services available or recommended for students with learning disabilities. The results suggest that postsecondary institutions have begun to provide a wide array of services to these students. There is little empirical evidence, however, on the effectiveness of those services. An agenda for future research is also discussed.

A Study Of Reading Achievement Gains In Classes Of Special Education Teachers Using The Beginning Teacher Assistance Program Indicators Of Competence, Cynthia Henshaw
A Study Of Reading Achievement Gains In Classes Of Special Education Teachers Using The Beginning Teacher Assistance Program Indicators Of Competence, Cynthia Henshaw
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
In Virginia, the State Board of Education has specified fourteen areas in which every teacher who is granted a Collegiate Professional Certificate must be competent and has established the Virginia Beginning Teacher Assistance Program (BTAP) for the purpose of assessing the competence of beginning teachers. The basis of BTAP is a "set of measurable or observable indicators through which beginning teachers can demonstrate their competence in each competency area specified by the Board of Education." In studies of teacher effectiveness in regular education, these competency areas have been consistently related to increased student achievement. Few studies in special education have …

Social Status And The Play Interactions Of Students Labelled Learning Disabled And Their Peers, Tammy S. Bryant
Masters Theses
The relationship between social status and play interactions of students labelled learning disabled and their peers is an area which has received much attention. However, most of the research has focused on students in resource settings. The current study focused on students labelled learning disabled in self-contained settings. The study involved administering the Play With Rating Scale to 41 second and third graders in regular classrooms and to 11 same-aged peers who were learning disabled in self-contained settings. The results were divided into popular/average and unpopular status groups. Thirty-three children were observed at play utilizing an observation tool developed by …
