An Evaluation Technique In Appraising Certain Community Resources For Conservation Education In Stanislaus County, Harold Clarence Francis

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study is concerned with how the school is to proceed in a program of conservation education to bring about these desired changes. It is concerned, however, with only one link in the long chain of activities composing the total conservation education program--the development of a cooperative evaluation technique in appraising certain community agencies that can be used by the schools of Stanislaus county in teaching conservation of the resources most vital to the county; namely, soil and water. The study attempted to evaluate the agencies in terms of the accessibility and adaptability of their use to the school program.

An Exploratory Study Of Causes Of Juvenile Delinquency In The Tulare Union High School District, Paul Samuel Longenecker

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Young people, who attend high school. Face many problems these days. Some youth seem able to marshal all the resources necessary to solve and overcome their problems; others seem barely able to hold the line, while a few, who are much publicized, are overcome by their problems. Those who are overcome by their problems, when their behavior takes on anti-social characteristics, are called juvenile delinquents. It may be juvenile delinquency or parental failure. By whatever name it is called, shortcomings are in evidence.

Whenever juvenile delinquency is mentioned in a community, the signal seems to be given to variou groups …

The Supervision Of The Guidance Program In A Small High School, John H. Clark

All Graduate Projects

The small high school has some problems to overcome in order to do an effective job in the guidance of its young people. It is difficult for the staff to find time for guidance activities in the busy schedule of today's curriculum. Released time is very necessary if effective counseling is to be done.

Another problan to be faced is the lack of trained personnel to head the guidance program. The high school principal must find a capable person or else head the program himself.

A third problem faced by the small high school is that of maintaining adequate records …

The Contributions Of John Swett To Free Public Education In California, Will Shippee Cluff Jr. Jan 1954

The Contributions Of John Swett To Free Public Education In California, Will Shippee Cluff Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

To no one man can go the full credit for establishing and building the free public schools of California, any more than can any single individual be given full credit in any complex community undertaking. But in any communal activity, one man usually stands out, and in the case of the schools of California, John Swett is that individual.

Much has been written about Swett, the man, but little has been written about his contributions to the school structure of his adopted state. The latter is the problem with which this paper deals. In view of an ever increasing interest …

How The Spanish Culture Can Contribute More Significantly To The Social Studies Program Of California Elementary Schools, Samuel Encínas Renteria Jan 1954

How The Spanish Culture Can Contribute More Significantly To The Social Studies Program Of California Elementary Schools, Samuel Encínas Renteria

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the past, evidence indicates that the teaching of social studies in many places in California has been a perfunctory, superficial type of instruction, For example, early attempts to expose the child to the historical background of California were through a history or geography book. In most cases, the usual procedure was to tell the child to read so many pages and then answer the questions at the end of the chapter. The main objective was to cover the text by the end of the school term and pass an examination over facts with little or no concern for the …

Effect Of Environment On Athletic Ability, Carroll Clinton Stowell Jan 1954

Effect Of Environment On Athletic Ability, Carroll Clinton Stowell

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

There have bean many arguments, pro and con, about which boys make the best athletes. One very well known college coach, so the legend goes, would do his recruiting of football players in the following manner. He would drive around the country and every time he saw a prospective football player plowing a field he would stop and ask directions to the next town. If the boy just told him how to get there he would depart, but if the boy picked up the plow and pointed in the direction he should go he would immediately ask him to come …

The Development And Justification Of A Course In Alcohol Education For Secondary Schools, Ernest E. Kaster Jan 1954

The Development And Justification Of A Course In Alcohol Education For Secondary Schools, Ernest E. Kaster

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

With the increasing pressure of the American way of life, increased tension and anxieties of our fast civilization, and increased pressure of the advertisements of the liquor industry on billboards, magazines, radio, and newspapers, the alcohol problem has been steadily increasing. It is estimated that two-thirds of the alcoholics begin their drinking while in high school. It would appear then that the high school is the proper place in which to prepare the future citizens to solve their problems in an intelligent and unbiased manner.

A Simplified Revision Of The Keston Music Preference Test, Barbara Jean Snodgrass Sep 1953

A Simplified Revision Of The Keston Music Preference Test, Barbara Jean Snodgrass

Psychology ETDs

The purpose of this study was to revise and simplify a new and involved test of musical preference. The Keston Music Preference Test in its original form consisted of sixteen phonograph record discs, or thirty-two sides in all. It took approximately three hours to administer, and the grading procedure was extremely complex and time consuming. However, in spite of these difficulties, the test has demonstrated its usefulness in measuring musical discrimination, or musical sophistication among high school students and college students. It seemed highly desirable, therefore, to reduce the length of the test and to simplify the grading system of …

The Organization Of A Functional Library For The Mound City, Kansas, High School, John L. Carmichael Jul 1952

The Organization Of A Functional Library For The Mound City, Kansas, High School, John L. Carmichael

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The nature of the educative process widespread throughout the United States, with its emphasis upon textbooks and uniform learning, has tended to make the school library appear as an extra rather than an essential. Consequently, money has been spent on the library only with left over from other departments. Many teachers encouraged the pupil to use the library solely for leisure reading or for some other information if, or sometimes after, lessons were done. Administration in many schools have not been educational leaders. They have stood by and have been unaffected by controversies over teaching methods and materials to be …
