Fourteen Life Stories Of Foreign Students In The U.S.A.: Reader For Students Of English As A Second Language, Manoon Karuthanang
MA TESOL Collection
The following stories were written basically from my experiences as a foreign student in the United States. Some stories portray actual incidents which I experienced during the five years of my life in the U.S. My purpose in writing these stories is to provide cross-cultural reading material for the English as a Second Language class and to provide an orientation handbook for the student of English as a second language whose language level is intermediate to advanced. The stories provide hypothetical situations and aspects of language, customs and the culture of the Americans which the student should know.

The Use Of The Language Laboratory For Language Learning In Japan (English), Hideko Fukuhara
MA TESOL Collection
This is a work-related study concerning the language laboratory in Japan. It is primarily based on my working experience at the National L.L. School, my student teaching site, and at the Seibi Bunka Center (Seibi Cultural Center) where I worked as a coordinator sent from the National office. It is also supported by my study of selected articles in Modern Language Journal, books written by Japanese experts, a report of Osaka-fu Kagaku Kyoiku Center ( The Osaka Prefectural Educational Science Center) where I attended lectures on the language laboratory, and information from a questionnaire sent to secondary school teachers who …
A Reference Manual Of French, Italian, Romanian, Portuguese And Spanish Regular Verb Tense Formation, John Zioze
A Reference Manual Of French, Italian, Romanian, Portuguese And Spanish Regular Verb Tense Formation, John Zioze
MA TESOL Collection
The present work is intended to serve as a reference manual of the formation of the regular verb forms in five related Romance tongues - Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian. Because of their common origin in Latin, it is logical to expect that these languages share many aspects of verb formation in common. This work compiles information about the morphological patterning of verbs and relates these to use and tense with charts reflecting their inflectioned endings. Such information will hopefully be of value to students of Romance languages as well as students of comparative linguistics.

The Reading Process And Alphablanks, Dale Saul, Linda Driver
The Reading Process And Alphablanks, Dale Saul, Linda Driver
MA TESOL Collection
Alphablanks was developed as an aid for teaching reading by Rosalie R. Saul. It has been used chiefly in teaching children to read in their native language, especially in the field of learning disabilities. We wanted to expand its use into the ESL classroom. But we also wanted to present a rationale for using Alphablanks, to research the field of reading and how we go about learning to read, in order to find out exactly what areas of reading Alphablanks would help. Thus this paper is divided into two main parts: a summary of current research into reading, interpreting this …
Death In Children's Literature, Joyce Ann Kaufman
Death In Children's Literature, Joyce Ann Kaufman
Honors Theses
Mr. Wordsworth posed an interesting question. What should a child know about death?
Often we try to protect children from death. Euphemisms are used regarding death. People and pets do not die, they "pass away," "go to sleep," or "go to live in heaven." When a death occurs in a family, the adults often say of a young child, "It doesn't seem to bother him. Maybe he doesn't realize what has happened." Other people may mention that "He has accepted it so well. Children adapt so easily."

Teaching Across Cultures: A Review Of The Personal Accounts Of Twelve Teachers, Nicholas Hilmers
Teaching Across Cultures: A Review Of The Personal Accounts Of Twelve Teachers, Nicholas Hilmers
MA TESOL Collection
This is a review of the personal accounts of twelve teachers who have worked in cultural settings other than their own. It is intended to be useful to teachers who plan to enter a different culture. The twelve critical reviews are supplemented by a commentary which points out the limitations of the literature and discusses common adjustment problems which appear. It is argued that the success of a teacher in adjusting to a different culture can be attributed to certain qualities of personality. Briefly stated, these qualities are adaptibility, a strong will, creativity and a humanistic attitude.

In this context, the Division Director of Education appears to play a vital part, yet his role has not been clearly delineated. It is with a view to ascertaining what his role should be, that this study has been undertaken.
Method: The respondents drawn from eight overseas divisions as well …
