Inter-Rater Variability As Mutual Disagreement: Identifying Raters’ Divergent Points Of View, A. Gingerich, Susan E. Ramlo

Whenever multiple observers provide ratings, even of the same performance,
inter-rater variation is prevalent. The resulting ‘idiosyncratic rater variance’ is considered
to be unusable error of measurement in psychometric models and is a threat to the
defensibility of our assessments. Prior studies of inter-rater variation in clinical assessments
have used open response formats to gather raters’ comments and justifications. This
design choice allows participants to use idiosyncratic response styles that could result in a
distorted representation of the underlying rater cognition and skew subsequent analyses. In
this study we explored rater variability using the structured response format of Q

In remote valleys and plateaus of western China, village girls have been pushing their way into schools. Despite extreme family poverty, the vulnerabilities and low status of being a girl, the isolation of their villages, as well as the deplorable conditions of their schooling, girls persist in seeking an education. We examine forces of change where minimal human rights, minimal social justice,and multiple deprivations of freedomwere the norm. We brought to light village girls’ capabilities and their potential for gaining individual and collective social justice. This study describes the experiences of two preservice science teachers as they progress through their respective teacher education programs, and uses critical race theory to examine the manner in which conceptions about race and its pedagogical implications change over time. Using a longitudinal case study method, participants’ conceptual ecologies of race and pedagogy are mapped both before and after student teaching, and each case is analyzed for evidence of conceptual change in these

This chapter provides an overview of the field of Chinese language learning in study abroad contexts. It consists of three sections. The first section presents the major models and features of American university-run study abroad (SA) programs in mainland China. The major models hinge on the program’s length and content. The features are reflected in curriculum requirements, location, extracurricular activities, and program accommodations. Section two shares a review of theories and empirical studies that investigate the learning process and outcomes in Chinese SA contexts.
