Perceptions And Attitudes Of Students, Teachers, And Parents About Middle School Science Fairs, Norma Beth Greenfield

Theses Digitization Project

The problem addressed in this study was to determine what students, parents, and teachers perceive to be the main reason a school has a science fair, and whether they believe science fairs accomplish their goals. Attitudes toward competition, awarding of prizes, voluntary versus required participation, and alternatives to science fairs were also examined and compared among the groups.

Developmental Aspects : Metacognition And Problem Solving, Roseanne Gibson Jan 1996

Developmental Aspects : Metacognition And Problem Solving, Roseanne Gibson

Theses : Honours

Mathematical problem solving has been the focus of recent curriculum reform. Researchers have investigated factors that appear to influence mathematical problem solving: one of these factors is metacognition. This study identified metacognitive aspects and investigated the relationship of metacognition and age in the context of mathematical problem solving. Twenty four children were randomly chosen: eight children from years two. four and six. The children were given the same non-routine problem to solve. A semi-structured interview and observation protocol were developed and used to determine students' metacognitive aspects. There was an extensive descriptive analysis of metacognitive aspects and a systematic quantification …

An Investigation Of The Achievement Of 4 X 4 Block-Scheduled Advanced Placement Calculus Ab Students, Carolyn Marie Keen Jan 1996

An Investigation Of The Achievement Of 4 X 4 Block-Scheduled Advanced Placement Calculus Ab Students, Carolyn Marie Keen

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The research investigated whether 4 x 4 block scheduling had any effect on students' achievement in Advanced Placement Calculus AB and described some of the dynamics involved in the shifts to 4 x 4 plans. Data from 52 schools (38 North Carolina, 14 Virginia) were divided into two groups: (Sample 1) 25 schools in which the course was taught in one semester (N = 252) and (Sample 2) 27 schools in which it was taught in two semesters (N = 355). Using two-tailed Z and chi square goodness-of-fit tests {dollar}(\alpha=0.05),{dollar} the 1995 AP test mean score of each sample was …

The Beliefs And Attitudes Of Primary School Teachers In The Bunbury Region Toward The Subject Of Science, Michelle A. Mckeon Jan 1996

The Beliefs And Attitudes Of Primary School Teachers In The Bunbury Region Toward The Subject Of Science, Michelle A. Mckeon

Theses : Honours

The study investigated the beliefs and attitudes of primary school teachers in the Bunbury region toward the subject of science. Teachers' beliefs and attitudes were investigated in terms of the dependant variables of teachers' attitude toward science, preference for teaching science and confidence to teach science and how they related to the independent variables of qualifications, Year 11 and 12 science subjects, years of teaching experience, time of last science inservice and gender. Teachers' perceptions of the barriers toward more and better teaching of science in primary schools were also investigated. The sample included 89 teachers from nine schools, six …

Design And Evaluation Of An Environmental Science Curriculum For Secondary Students, Carolyn Knox Cooper Jan 1996

Design And Evaluation Of An Environmental Science Curriculum For Secondary Students, Carolyn Knox Cooper

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Environmental education is becoming an increasingly important component of secondary science education as our society attempts to minimize the exploitations and damaging actions of humankind on the earth. Environmental education has evolved primarily from environmental consciousness in the 1960s to an environmentally active focus in the 1990s. This project examined the effectiveness of an environmental education curriculum that focuses on improving environmental behaviors and attitudes as well as knowledge.

The review of the literature for this project indicates that responsible environmental behaviors are linked to four types of environmental education categories. These categories are hierarchical and include: 1) ecological concepts, …
