Spatial Perception As A Predictor Of Success In Higher Mathematics, Lou A. Rolen May 1985

Spatial Perception As A Predictor Of Success In Higher Mathematics, Lou A. Rolen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was to determine if spatial perception could be a predictor of success in higher mathematics. This study first showed correlations of the results of three spatial perception tests taken by high-school students with their final geometry grades. Structure of the Intellect-Learning Ability subtests CFS (cognition of figural systems) and CFT (cognition of figural transformations), as well as Differential Aptitude Tests-Space Relations subtest, were used. Correlations were then computed for high-school geometery grades with calculus I grades. Geometry thus was used as a bridge between spatial perception and calculus performance. Secondly, the investigator explored any difference …

Reading, Understanding, Remembering And Using Information In Written Science Materials., Larry Yore, James Shymansky

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

With traditional science textbooks still dominating the market, it is projected that the use of print material and related reading skills will persist as the prime method of science instruction. The need to research reading-science issues exists. This paper attempts to define the task or desired outcomes of research in reading-science dimensions. Areas developed in this paper include: (1) science reading and comprehension; (2) theories of the reading process (illustrated by models); (3) research in science reading (presented by grade level, subject matter, and curricular programs); (4) reading comprehension and science achievement (emphasizing text structure); and (5) research trends and …

Some Comments On The Crisis In Engineering And Engineering Technology Education, Kenneth G. Merkel Jan 1985

Some Comments On The Crisis In Engineering And Engineering Technology Education, Kenneth G. Merkel

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The maintenance of a high-quality technological base in the United States is dependent upon adequately funded engineering programs in American colleges and universities. At the current time, many American engineering educators feel that their academic programs are in a state of crisis with respect to adequacy of resources. A number of foundations associated with large American companies (Exxon, IBM, Amoco, and others) have provided funds designed to aid engineering education. Funded programs at the national level have been proposed in Congress. At the present time, the current level of funding is still inadequate. It will take a national technological crisis …

Perceptions Of Nursing Education Administrators And Nursing Service Administrators Regarding Associate Degree And Baccalaureate Nurses In Hospitals, Judith Pinson Sortet Jan 1985

Perceptions Of Nursing Education Administrators And Nursing Service Administrators Regarding Associate Degree And Baccalaureate Nurses In Hospitals, Judith Pinson Sortet

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The problem investigated was the degree of incongruence between the perceptions of nursing education administrators and nursing service administrators in regard to the educational preparation and employment practices for technical and professional nurses which has contributed to discontent in the profession. The population studied was nursing education administrators in AD and BSN programs and nursing service administrators in general acute care hospitals in West Virginia. The research method was a descriptive survey using a mailed questionnaire developed by a researcher. Eighteen (100%) of the nursing education administrators and sixty (89.6%) of the nursing service administrators responded.

Seven perceptions were examined …

Enlightened By Shadow, Nancy Frazier Jan 1985

Enlightened By Shadow, Nancy Frazier

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In the golden age of radio, listeners were told that "only The Shadow knows." 1.,amont Cranston, better known as The Shadow, was the enlightened character with all of the answers to solve repeated mysteries. The Shadow is no longer with us, but the use of shadow puppetry in the elementary classroom can help solve mysteries and bring "life" to the study of light and shadow. Toe use of shadow puppets should allow students to achieve the following objectives: to create shadows by putting objects between a light source and a screen or surface; to recognize objects by their shape; to …

Iowa Meteorites, Larry A. Kelsey Jan 1985

Iowa Meteorites, Larry A. Kelsey

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Every day, the earth is bombarded by an estimated 100 tons of interplanetary debris. Most of this is produced by micrometeorites that vaporize high in the atmosphere and slowly settle to earth as a fine dust. Only a rare once-a-day small meteorite survives its passage through the atmosphere to impact the earth. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these go undetected or undiscovered. As a result, it is an important event when a sizable meteorite fall occurs which is well observed and documented. Interestingly, Iowa appears to have been blessed with an inordinate number of these falls within recorded history. In …
