This study was initiated as a result of a need that became apparent in two industrial arts seminars at Central Washington State College. Studies reveal that industrial arts teachers use principles, laws, and applications of mathematics and science daily, but these are seldom recognized and made meaningful to the students. As a result of this study industrial arts teachers may see a way to use this material to initiate similar situations in their teaching.

Germination And Early Survival Of Picea Rubens Sargent In Experimental Laboratory And Field Plantings, Nancy C. Wilson

The Problem: In the Smoky Mountains Pica rubens Sarg. (red spruce) occurs at elevations which suggest that it should occur further south than it does. Whittaker (1956) describes the potential altitudinal range of the spruce-fir forest as being in the southwestern Smoky mountains. High elevation deciduous forest with reduced stature, and "perhaps well beyond their favorable conditions of temperature and growing season," have replaced the sub-alpine forest type. If, as has been suggested by Whittaker (1956) and Mark (1958), historical factors based on changes of climate in geological time have eliminated the red spruce southward, then a modern man-made range …

While this necessarily introduces some mathematics, the intent is to have student understand and practice a few concepts (sets and numbers) in order to gain an appreciation of and facility for mathematical reasoning.

The book was intended to support short, supplementary courses outside the normal school curriculum.

During the summer of 1963, the author had the privilege of attending an Advanced Placement Chemistry Institute in which the participants built some simple instruments useful in chemistry and studied their usual applications. Conductivity Bridge built by the participants seemed to offer some advantages in presenting one of the demonstrations accompanying an experiment used in the Chem-Study course at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa where the following activity was conducted.
