A new Selectory (catalog) of educational materials on astronomy has been published by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. The international Society has been a source of nontechnical information about the universe since its founding on the Pacific Coast in 1889.

Nominations are currently being requested for the Iowa Academy of Science's annual Excellence in Science Teaching Awards. Six Iowa teachers will be selected to receive the awards which recognize excellence in elementary, junior high and senior high school teaching. One teacher will be selected to receive the award in each of the following areas: biology; chemistry, earth science, physics, elementary science and junior high science.

During the past two years, as I have worked with the University of Iowa's Chautauqua program, I have become concerned that relatively few science teachers have begun to incorporate Science/fechnology/Society (STS) materials into their existing curriculum. Lack of a concrete definition of Science/fechnology/Society has often served to frustrate teachers and disinterest them in using the concept even though they have already used many of the ideas in their teaching. A little creativity can often overcome a lack of "cook-book" rules in setting up an STS project and can produce a very rewarding experience in science education. Much has been written …

Iowa, along with many other states, has been faced with a loss of qualified physics teachers to the private sector for better salaries. This has created a shortage of people qualified to teach physics. A study by Howe and Gerlovich (1983) indicated that the majority of states in the United States are experiencing serious shortages of "qualified" science and math teachers. How To Dry Plants In The Microwave Oven, Donald J. Perschau

Heidi Hopp, one of my students, has developed the following method to press and dry herbarium specimens in a microwave oven. I have experimented with various plants using Heidi's method and have found that it works most of the time. While this method works best with non-waxy thin foliage (i.e. Poinsettia) it does a fair job on juicy plants (i.e. African violets) and waxy ones (i.e. Pin oak).

There have been indications that exposure to electromagnetic fields produced by voltage power lines have permanent effects on living organisms. I found studies on electromagnetic field effects on rodents and humans, but there has been little research done with plants. The purpose of my study was to record any measurable effects on desert shrubs in an area of Succor Creek, Oregon, produced by an adjacent 500 KV power line.

Ten Iowa high school seniors have received four-year, full-tuition scholarships designed for young Iowans interested in careers in science. The ten biotechnology scholarships in agriculture were awarded to students who will enroll in Iowa State University's College of Agriculture to study the basic sciences that undergird biotechnology.

Those of us who have recently traveled through Texas have met many Iowans there whose ticket to Texas was the Iowa economy. The letter which my colleague shared struck me as being a science teacher's ticket to Texas, courtesy of the Iowa economy, the Iowa legislature and the local school board.

Plant Part Puzzles, Kathleen Marvin, Carl W. Bollwinkel

A primary level lesson based on learning to know major plant parts is included in almost every elementary science textbook series. This lesson not only teaches the names of the organs of higher plants, but also offers an experience in classification using the learning cycle (Rubba, 1984). The plant part puzzles needed for this activity can be prepared easily from materials at hand and stored for reuse.
