A reforma educacional brasileira de 1870 do ministro Paulino de Souza procurou dar uma nova orientação aos estudos do Colégio Pedro II por enriquecer o “espirito” e desenvolver o intelecto do aluno através do ensino das Humanidades. Este trabalho relata a historia e analisa os conteúdos do programa de estudos do Colégio Pedro II, discutindo o numero e tipos de disciplinas no programa, seu sequenciamento nas series, e as cargas horarias atribuídas à elas. Em particular, examina a organização das disciplinas em “blocos de series”, seguidos por exames finais.

Creating Supplimental Visual And Manipulative Activities For Biology, Dennis Craig Johnson

All Graduate Projects

Alternative visual and tactile teaching strategies and their educational effectiveness for students of diverse backgrounds in the life sciences were studied. Supplemental activities to traditional, commercial, science programs were found to provide many effective learning pathways to a wide spectrum of learning styles. To assist in providing additional learning approaches toward program goals, the educational theory in the literary review was applied to the formation of a set of classroom science materials. Suggestions for classroom use have been provided.

Biological Olympiads are the sort of intellectual competition widely spread nowadays, especially among high school students. Olympiads, often an integral part of the curriculum, stimulate the pupils' interest in acquiring knowledge and help to evaluate the level of their knowledge. Biological Olympiads in this country differ greatly from the science Olympiad in the USA. First of all, they include only biological material and can be compared only with USA Science Olympiad events such as "A is for Anatomy," "Bio-Process Lab," "Designer Genes" or "Don't Bug Me." Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

It has been argued from world view theory that fundamental beliefs about the world exert a powerful influence on how sense is made of events in the world. However, the nature of that influence has remained enigmatic. Hannah Arendt's distinction between thinking and comprehension, and knowing and apprehension provides a clarification. Thinking is the epistemological path to conceptual comprehension. Knowing is the metaphysical path to apprehension - to the acceptance of a concept as true or valid. Comprehension does not necessitate apprehension. One may reject a fully understood concept. The recent discussion in science education about world view is essentially …

Though rooted in Piagetian research, constructivism1 is an avenue of research pertaining to teaching and learning that departed from the neo-Piagetian2 mainstream twenty years ago and has continued on a distinct path of development. The departure was evident by the late seventies, clearly marked by two publications, Novak (1977) and Driver & Easley (1978). For constructivists, learning is not knowledge written on, or transplanted to, a person's mind as if the mind were a blank slate waiting to be written on or an empty gallery waiting to be filled. Last fall, about 200 mathematics and science educators participated in the Governor's II Conference on Mathematics and Science Reform. The conference focused on achieving integration of math and science in Iowa by using model classrooms. Five months later, Iowa teachers, administrators and staff continue to develop model classrooms.

"Project: Problem Solving in the Model Classroom" was begun one year before the Governor's II Conference as a cooperative effort between the University of Iowa and a number of Iowa school districts. A fundamental principle of ecology is that "everything is interconnected." This observation holds true in the academic as well as the natural world; if we study an environmental issue in depth, we find that it cannot be resolved by means of any single discipline. Environmental studies transcend all disciplines so as to include the sciences, mathematics, technology, social studies, language arts and the practical and fine arts. The science component, ecology, is itself an integrating rather than a splintering science. It draws together the traditionally separate disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics and earth science. Luther College has a tradition of elementary teacher preparation stretching back to the tum of the century. It was therefore fitting that Luther College receive the only Eisenhower model demonstration program grant given to an Iowa four-year college. Built on outreaches and contacts developed by a teacher enhancement summer workshop held on the Luther Campus in 1993, the new program extends its outreach to the entire Northeast Iowa region.

One of the things that makes this world such a wonderful place is the variety of living things. There are thousands and thousands kinds of plants and animals. Some are so tiny we cannot see them without a magnifying glass. Some are bigger than elephants. Some, like parrots, have bright colors. Some, like orchids, have very strange shapes. Some, like people, come in different sizes, shapes and colors and do very interesting things. There are many differences in all these living things and we call this "diversity."

Estimation Of Percent Body Fat By Hydrostatic Weighing In High Schools, Fred W. Kolkhorst

Concerns with fitness have increased interest in body composition and ideal body weight. Although anthropometric (e.g. skinfold) measurements can quickly determine general body composition, hydrostatic weighings are more accurate. While most exercise physiology laboratories on university campuses have a specialized tank for performing hydrostatic weighings, adequate stations can be set up in any swimming pool for a minimal initial cost. Several scientific concepts can be demonstrated during this exercise: measurement of lung volumes, determination of body density and calculation of percent body fat.

Naola Van Orden at Sacramento City College in California has her students write science fiction stories to demonstrate their understanding of various scientific concepts. While the assignments made by Van Orden and the responses she received from her students may be too advanced for lower grades, the idea can be used from the elementary level up.

Elementary and middle school science teachers may wish to learn more about the Astronomy and Space Science Education Summer Institutes to be held on June 21-July 12 and July 17-August 5 at the Lawrence Hall of Science of the University of California at Berkeley. The primary focus of the institutes is to serve elementary and middle school teachers who wish to better integrate astronomy and space science content into their curriculum. However, secondary consideration is given to high school instructors who are responsible for training elementary or middle school teachers.
