Forty years ago, Jesuit philosopher and theologian Ignacio Ellacuría accepted an honorary doctorate from Santa Clara University and delivered a commencement address with which some of us here today are likely familiar. In the concise and penetrating speech, Ellacuría proposed a vision of the university as both a center of intellectual inquiry and cultural production, and as a “social force”—a place concerned with the transformation of social reality.

The conference description puts in remarkably succinct language what it takes most academics a long time to say. The description prompts participants “to explore how our reading and understanding of Vatican II documents, as well as the formative thinkers of Vatican II and the Catholic intellectual tradition, can deepen and expand our vision of Catholic higher education, addressing new and old challenges.” In accordance with this prompt, my paper will take up one challenge, an old one: handing on the Catholic intellectual tradition.

Almost exactly sixty years ago to the day, pope John XXIII opened Vatican II, the greatest religious event in the 20th century and an epoch-changing council like only Trent before, with a speech, Gaudet Mater Ecclesia, which single-handedly redirected the agenda of the council and arguably also the course of Church history. Even though Vatican II deserves to be celebrated, anniversaries often have the unstated purpose to administer symbolic sedation. Catholic colleges and universities educate thousands of teachers and school administrators every year to be at the forefront of teaching and leading. The mission and vision of Catholic colleges and universities is unique in higher education while sending their graduates forth into every sector of the wider world. We explore the contribution of the Catholic intellectual tradition (CIT) for colleges of education at Catholic colleges and universities. In this particular piece, we mine the tradition's emphasis on contemplation to cultivate and inform a practice of reflection for aspiring educators.

In 1599 the Society of Jesus approved the Ratio atque Institutio Studiorum Societatis lesu (Method and System of the Studies of the Society of Jesus). The document outlined policies and procedures on the administration, curriculum and teaching practices in its educational institutions in Europe and abroad. Part of the Ratio detailed a secondary program of studies in classical languages and literature. The Ratio atque Institutio Studiorum Societatis lesu {Method and System of the Studies of the Society of Jesus) defined the organization, operation and teaching methodology of Jesuit secondary and higher education institutions during the greater part of the colonial period, which extended from April 1500 when the first Portuguese explorers set foot on the Brazilian shore to July 1822 when Brazil declared its independence from Portugal. Higgins is SHU’s vice president for Mission and Catholic Identity. The year 1963 was a time of international tensions, major social and political turbulence, and the early years of the Second Vatican Council. Great changes were taking place around the world, inspiring Bishop Walter W. Curtis of Bridgeport to create a university in which laity would assume leadership.

This is a lecture in honor of the Fr. Jonathan DeFelice, president of Saint Anselm College, before his retirement. The lecture addresses the challenges facing Catholic higher education. Part One lays out philosopher Martha Nussbaum's view of the crisis of the humanities. Based in her ideas, Part Two examines four challenges facing Catholic higher education. Part Three gives an account of the Catholic philosophy of higher education for the common good, featuring Jacques Maritain’s educational and political philosophy. The Conclusion revisits the challenges in light of Maritain's, and the author's, Catholic philosophy of education.

Throughout the papers of this book, the CIT appears not to be an abstract concept but a dynamic reality, a powerful source of inspiration for imagining creative ways to face the challenges of life in today’s world. Critical voices question the reference to Catholicism, others to a tradition. While addressing these issues helps to prevent the CIT from becoming the victim from either unreligious or traditionalist misconceptions, a synthetic approach will try to reveal fundamental dynamisms of the CIT that allow to identify it without reducing its inherent complexity and historical diversity, including its expressions yet to come.
