The Devil Of Hell's Kitchen : Social Constructions In The Best Of Us, Sam Tracy Sep 2016

The Devil Of Hell's Kitchen : Social Constructions In The Best Of Us, Sam Tracy

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Cultural norms shape perceptions. This is an unavoidable truth, but one that is rarely acknowledged. It isn’t important whether that lack of acknowledgement is based on a general unawareness or willful ignorance or something else — but simply that it happens. The majority of the mainstream public is in the dark about many prejudices that seep into societal norms. One of the struggles many of us face is putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes. Majorities have trouble sympathizing with minorities or refuse to try. White people cannot be the target of racism, heterosexuals do not have to live with homophobia …

Response To "Kaepernick Saga Telling Of America’S Racial Divides", Sarah Witthauer Sep 2016

Response To "Kaepernick Saga Telling Of America’S Racial Divides", Sarah Witthauer

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

The Sept. 6. 2016, edition of The Maine Campus included a degrading opinion piece rife with the perpetuation of crippling stereotypes that have had an enormous effect on the African-American community. Editor Jacob Posik’s piece “Kaepernick saga telling of America’s racial divides” not only included gross generalizations of the African-American community but also displayed an alarming apathy towards police brutality and the lives and valid concerns of his fellow Americans. This piece dangerously spews racial rhetoric that is offensive and has no place for a liberal school campus.

Kaepernick Saga Telling Of America's Racial Divides, Jacob Posik Sep 2016

Kaepernick Saga Telling Of America's Racial Divides, Jacob Posik

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Sometimes it’s just best to keep your mouth shut, follow suit and do the right thing. Perhaps nobody is as unacquainted with this valuable life lesson and in need of such conscientious advice as Colin Kaepernick, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback who refused to stand for the national anthem during a pre-season football game because of our country’s alleged mistreatment of minorities, in his own words. Prior to a pre-season bout against the Green Bay Packers last week, Kaepernick sat on the bench while our country’s anthem played. After the contest, Kaepernick was asked by NFL media reporters on his …

Is Anti-Patriotism A Fair Method Of Protest?, Nina Mahaleris

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, has recently become heavily scrutinized by both the media and the American public after his refusal to stand for the national anthem out of protest against systemic injustice. His actions have now erupted a nation-wide debate about what exactly is acceptable as “peaceful protest.” In fact, it can be said that the movement as a whole was ill-conceived. Should we, the American public, allow and encourage this type of anti-patriotism?

Faculty, Ph.D. Student Explore Poverty, Racial Privilege And Reform In Rural Schools, Casey Kelly Aug 2016

Faculty, Ph.D. Student Explore Poverty, Racial Privilege And Reform In Rural Schools, Casey Kelly

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

As Maine students return to the classroom from summer vacation, many will do so in communities facing a host of economic and social challenges. Rural parts of the state have been hit especially hard by declines in the state’s timber industry. When a mill closes in a small, Maine town, more often than not there’s no new business waiting in the wings to hire all of the suddenly out-of-work residents. The result is poverty and all of its attendant social problems, which affect schools in a variety of ways.

Social Justice And The Future Of Higher Education Kinesiology, Brian Culp Aug 2016

Social Justice And The Future Of Higher Education Kinesiology, Brian Culp

Faculty and Research Publications

This article presents a rationale for the infusion of social justice into kinesiology programs for the purpose of reducing inequities in society. Specifically, the current climate for social justice is considered and discussed using examples from an university-inspired service-learning initiative, law, and politics. Of note are the following areas of discussion: (a) differentiation between social diversity and social justice, (b) public pedagogy as a means by which to inspire service action, (c) the creation of climates for speech and application of social justice, (d) modeling and socialization for equity, and (e) the neoliberal threat to inclusiveness. The article concludes with …

Diversity Week Highlights Many Walks Of Life Across Umaine Community, Josh Fabel

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

According to Director of Multicultural Student Life, Silvestre Guzman, Diversity Week has occurred on the UMaine campus for at least eight years, and has become a popular string of events within the past few years. This year, the week was comprised of many smaller events that occurred everyday such as meditation, karaoke and a couple of educational seminars on different diversity topics, such as religion. The events were put together with the assistance of the Caribbean Club, The Student Heritage Alliance Council and the Muslim Students Association as well as other heritage groups on campus.

A Racism Without Race: A Moroccan Case Study Of Race Denial, Leila Chreiteh Apr 2016

A Racism Without Race: A Moroccan Case Study Of Race Denial, Leila Chreiteh

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This article aims to articulate the ways in which race and race relations are conceptualized in Morocco. Using the concept of racialized discourse as the preconceptual theoretical field for race and racist expressions, the author analyzes the different converging factors which influence the performance of “Moroccan-ness” and how subjectivity can be influenced by a State-driven communal linguistic episteme. Through its insistent hyper-nationalist campaigns, the Moroccan State has deployed racist expressions as a means of face-keeping and sociopolitical management, which have become naturalized through its reproduction in individual subjectivity and interpellation. However, from the independent research conducted by the author, the …

An Extensive, Critical, And Academic Listening Module For Advanced English Language Learners, Sharon Tjaden-Glass Mar 2016

An Extensive, Critical, And Academic Listening Module For Advanced English Language Learners, Sharon Tjaden-Glass

Center for International Programs Publications and Presentations

Listening and note-taking is a challenging skill for many advanced English language learners because it involves multiple cognitive processes: listening, writing, and reading. Even with targeted instruction of listening strategies, a recurring complaint from advanced English learners is that they simply cannot handle listening to long stretches of English. In this paper, the author presents a supplemental instructional component that provides extensive, critical, and academic listening practice for students who need to strengthen their listening skills.

Remaking Selves, Repositioning Selves, Or Remaking Space: An Examination Of Asian American College Students' Processes Of "Belonging", Michelle Samura Mar 2016

Remaking Selves, Repositioning Selves, Or Remaking Space: An Examination Of Asian American College Students' Processes Of "Belonging", Michelle Samura

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"Only a few studies have examined Asian American students’ sense of belonging (Hsia, 1988; Lee & Davis, 2000; Museus & Maramba, 2010). Scholars who study Asian American college students have suggested that Asian Americans are awkwardly positioned as separate from other students of color vis-à-vis the model minority stereotype (Hsia, 1988; Lee & Davis, 2000). Furthermore, Asian Americans often are viewed as overrepresented on college campuses, yet they remain under-served by campus support programs and resources and overlooked by researchers. Many Asian Americans have gained access to higher education, but the ways in which they belong on campuses is unclear. …

Humanization Of Non-Violent Inmates Critical To Prison Reform, Kim Crowley Jan 2016

Humanization Of Non-Violent Inmates Critical To Prison Reform, Kim Crowley

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

The United States prison system is in desperate need of reform. We are the world’s leading jailer, creating trends of mass incarceration, racial disparity and widespread prison overpopulation. The statistics surrounding U.S. criminal justice, specifically our national prison system, are dismal at best. Over 2 million U.S. citizens are currently in prison. State prisons, as a group, exceed their maximum nominal inmate capacity by 15 percent. Federal prisons exceed their capacity even more so by 36 percent.

Political Correctness Not An Issue; Bigotry Is, Brooke Bailey

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

If you’re a part of the thousands of people that gripe about the continuing political ads, relentless telephone calls, and debate analyses that clog up the daily news, some bad news awaits you: this election season is just getting started. By next week, people in Iowa and New Hampshire will cast the first votes of the 2016 presidential election cycle, creating a visual approximation on who may be the United States’ 45th president. This campaign process has been unique to say the least, particularly with the Republican nominees. For example, to many people’s surprise, political outsiders Donald Trump and Ben Carson …

A Latent Class Analysis Of School Climate Among Middle And High School Students In California Public Schools, Kris T. De Pedro, Tamika D. Gilreath, Ruth Berkowitz Jan 2016

A Latent Class Analysis Of School Climate Among Middle And High School Students In California Public Schools, Kris T. De Pedro, Tamika D. Gilreath, Ruth Berkowitz

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Research has shown that a positive school climate plays a protective role in the social, emotional, and academic development of adolescent youth. Researchers have utilized variable centered measures to assess school climate, which is limited in capturing heterogeneous patterns of school climate. In addition, few studies have systematically explored the role of race and gender in perceived school climate. This study utilizes a latent class approach to assess whether there are discrete classes of school climate in a diverse statewide sample of middle and high school youth. Drawing from the 2009–2011 California Healthy Kids Survey, this study identified four latent …
